It feels like every time my mother and I start to have a conversation, it turns into an argument. We talk about something as simple as dinner plans and suddenly, my mother will push the conversation into World War 3. She’ll talk about my lack of a bright future because I don’t plan to be a doctor. And much to her disappointment, I don’t want to do any job related to science, either. In fact, when I was pushed to say that I planned to major(主修) in English and communications, she nearly had a heart attack.
“Why can’t you be like my co-worker’s son ” she bemoans all the time. Her co-worker’s son received a four-year scholarship and is now earning 70,000 dollars a year as an engineer. I don’t know what to answer except that I simply can’t be like Mr. Perfect as I’ve called the unnamed co-worker’s son. I can’t be like him. I’m the type of person who loves to help out in the community, write until the sun goes down, and most of all, wants to achieve a career because I love it, not because of fame(名声) or salary.
I understand why my mother is worried about my future major. I’ve seen my mother struggle to raise me on her small salary and work long hours. She leaves the house around 6:30 a.m. and usually comes home around 5 p.m. or even 6 p.m. However, I want her to know that by becoming a doctor, it doesn’t mean I’ll be successful. I’d rather follow my dreams and create my own future.

(2021年·全国乙卷)
During an interview for one of my books, my interviewer said something I still think about often. Annoyed by the level of distraction(干扰) in his open office, he said, “That’s why I have a membership at the coworking space across the street—so I can focus.” His comment struck me as strange. After all, coworking spaces also typically use an open office layout(布局). But I recently came across a study that shows why his approach works.
The researchers examined various levels of noise on participants as they completed tests of creative thinking. They were randomly divided into four groups and exposed to various noise levels in the background, from total silence to 50 decibels(分贝), 70 decibels, and 85 decibels. The differences between most of the groups were statistically insignificant; however, the participants in the 70 decibels group—those exposed to a level of noise similar to background chatter in a coffee shop—significantly outperformed the other groups. Since the effects were small, this may suggest that our creative thinking does not differ that much in response to total silence and 85 decibels of background noise.
But since the results at 70 decibels were significant, the study also suggests that the right level of background noise—not too loud and not total silence—may actually improve one’s creative thinking ability. The right level of background noise may interrupt our normal patterns of thinking just enough to allow our imaginations to wander, without making it impossible to focus. This kind of “distracted focus” appears to be the best state for working on creative tasks.
So why do so many of us hate our open offices The problem may be that, in our offices, we can’t stop ourselves from getting drawn into others’ conversations while we’re trying to focus. Indeed, the researchers found that face-to-face interactions and conversations affect the creative process, and yet a coworking space or a coffee shop provides a certain level of noise while also providing freedom from interruptions.
28. Why does the interviewer prefer a coworking space
A. It helps him concentrate.
B. It blocks out background noise.
C. It has a pleasant atmosphere.
D. It encourages face-to-face interactions.
解析:细节理解题。根据第一段中采访者说的话“That’s why I have a membership at the coworking space across the street—so I can focus.”可知,采访者觉得共享办公空间能让其更加集中注意力。

It is believed that each individual, regardless of race or religion, has a purpose in life, and until you discover what your purpose is, you will not find true happiness, nor true job satisfaction. This doesn’t mean you won’t be successful. It just means you won’t be happy until you are moving towards your true purpose.
Unfortunately, school systems do very little to help students discover their true career. This is where online personality tests and career tests can help.
Online personality tests and career tests can help you better understand what type of work you should be doing to achieve job satisfaction, happiness, and success. Personality tests are most useful in giving you insight into “how” your personality compares to others and “how” you like to work. In particular, if you frequently experience difficulty working with others, or getting their support and cooperation, a really good personality test would show you how to get along better.
While personality tests are very useful at showing you how you like to work and how you like your work environment, they are not really designed to show you “what” type of work is right for you. That is where career interest tests come in. They will help you discover what your true interests are, and what type of work you will be passionate about.
But back to personality tests. The most well-established personality tests are the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, and the Enneagram.
32. What should a person do to achieve true job satisfaction
A. Find the true purpose in life.
B. Choose the best work.
C. Get along well with others.
D. Adapt to the work environment.
解析:细节理解题。根据第一段中的“... until you discover what your purpose is, you will not find true happiness, nor true job satisfaction.”可知,直到你找到你的人生目标,你才会找到真正的幸福,才能有真正的工作满足感。故选A。

33. What can online personality tests help a job-hunter do
A. Find a good job.
B. Further understand himself/herself.
C. Develop more hobbies.
D. Change life attitudes.

答案:B
34. What’s the author’s purpose in writing this passage
A. To present some popular online personality tests.
B. To tell readers about online personality and career tests.

A. The differences between personality tests and career tests.
B. The similarities between personality tests and career tests.
C. The reasons why personality and career tests are popular.
D. The details of the two most well-established personality tests.
解析:推理判断题。根据文章结构,最后一段之前的内容为我们讲述了两种测验的重要性及用途,由最后一段“But back to personality tests. The most well-established personality tests are ...”可知,作者接下来可能是要向我们介绍这两种做得比较好的性格测验。故选D。

Where and how could he get the rest of the money He knew his fellows all had bikes, without which he couldn’t hang around with them on weekends. He thought about asking his parents for money, but soon gave up because he knew it wouldn’t happen.
Earning money seemed to be the only way. So he had to find a job first. He decided to turn to Mr. Jackie for advice, who usually had opinions in most things. “Well, you can start right here. The floor needs cleaning and my car needs washing.” Then Tom’s part-time jobs began. For two months he worked every day after finishing his homework. He was surprised by a variety of jobs people found for him to do. He could hardly remember how many cars he had washed and how many windows he had cleaned, but he knew his dream would soon come true because the money kept increasing. The day finally came when he counted all the money he earned and found nearly 100 dollars. He couldn’t wait to go down to the shop to buy his dream bike.
It was by hard work that he bought the bike he had been dreaming of. So he cherished it very much. He had achieved what he thought was impossible, and that was more valuable than the bike.

All of his friends admired him for his hard work, expressing that they would learn from him—achieving their goals without giving up. After going back home, Tom was encouraged and required by his parents to thank Mr. Jackie and others for the part-time jobs they offered. Thinking of many surprising jobs, Tom understood all of them, and was moved to tears.
20 years later, Tom devoted himself to running a company. The company was named Good Opinions. He was willing to give good opinions to people in difficulty, offering a variety of jobs and helpful equipment to help them overcome all the challenges and live a happy life.

29. Which level of background noise may promote creative thinking ability
A. Total silence.
B. 50 decibels.
C. 70 decibels.
D. 85 decibels.
30. What makes an open office unwelcome to many people
A. Personal privacy unprotected.
B. Limited working space.
C. Restrictions on group discussion.
D. Constant interruptions.
31. What can we infer about the author from the text

B. He’s an office manager.
C. He’s a professional designer.
D. He’s a published writer.

33. What can online personality tests help a job-hunter do
A. Find a good job.
B. Further understand himself/herself.
C. Develop more hobbies.
D. Change life attitudes.
34. What’s the author’s purpose in writing this passage
A. To present some popular online personality tests.
B. To tell readers about online personality and career tests.
C. To tell the differences between some popular online tests.
D. To persuade people to take online personality or career tests.
35. What will the writer most probably talk about next
A. The differences between personality tests and career tests.
B. The similarities between personality tests and career tests.
C. The reasons why personality and career tests are popular.
D. The details of the two most well-established personality tests.

Disappointed and upset, Tom found his money box empty. The coins lying on the bed added up to $36.22. But the bike he wanted cost $88.
