The news that all teachers were expected to attend camp with their students left me feeling unsettled.
For the first time in more than 20 years, I would need to spend three days in the early autumn bush with
120 14-year-olds.
I love spending time with teenagers. But I teach Grade 12 English and am 51 years old. There is a
difference between a literary seminar on King Lear, no matter how lively it may be, and late-night party in
a campground. Besides, my idea of “outdoors” is biking on the Ottawa bike paths or sitting in the
backyard with a cup of tea and a good book.
Eventually, we turn down a long dirt track that dives deep into a forest. I read the schedule and note
the impressive minute-by-minute detail for the next 72 hours. I’ve never faced such a structured(高度组
织化的) time since, well, when I went to camp in Grade 9. I think of home.
The next morning, I arise early. It is 7 a.m. Time for the polar bear dip. Everyone asks if I am going
to swim. I respond with lame excuses and then wander, like a Grade 8 boy at the edges of a middle-school
dance. Kids charge in, great plumes(股流 ) of water rising up around them as they shout with joy. My
colleagues link arms, count down and run into the water bravely. Toweling off, the swimmers discuss the
water temperature. The regret that I knew I would feel starts to kill me. I will now forever be the guy who
did not take part in the polar bear dip. I walk slowly up to the dining hall and decide that from that
moment on I will devote fully to camp life. My unwillingness to do anything is replaced with a burning
desire to do everything.
At 7 a.m. the next morning, I am the first person on the beach in my bathing suit. I dive into the
water. I scream about how good it feels. Toweling off afterward, I talk to anyone within earshot about the
temperature of the water.
Later that day, the camp winds down. Something has happened in this camp. To the students, for sure,
but also to me. When the last camper leaves, I give the camp director a big hug.
24. How did the author feel before the camp
A. Angry. B. Disappointed. C. Anxious. D. Excited.
25. Why does the author mention the literary seminar in Paragraph 2
A. To stress its liveliness. B. To explain its topic.
C. To show its similarity to camping. D.To introduce his preference.
26. Why does the author decide to devote himself to camping
A. He is fed up with making excuses.
B He hates to be regret-stricken.
C. He desires to show off his swimming skills.
D. He is encouraged to do so by his colleagues.
27. What happened to the author at the end of the camp
A. He has become a camp lover.
B. He misses home very much.
C. He turns into a camp director.
D. He has used up his energy.

When you think of the Arctic, you imagine an icy land of pure white snow. Others imagine it as the
last really clean place left on Earth. We have polluted the deepest oceans with plastic trash, and now, CNN
says, “It’s the Arctic’s turn.”
German scientists have recently found microplastics in Arctic snow, the Associated Press reported.
Microplastics are pieces of plastic smaller than 5 millimeters. Sadly, the scientists found 1,800 pieces of
microplastic per liter of snow.
How is plastic pollution reaching the Arctic According to scientists, “It’s readily apparent that the
majority of the microplastic in the snow comes from the air.” They fall off of plastic objects and are
moved by the wind, just like dust. They mix with ice in the air and fall to the ground as snow. Finding
these plastics in Arctic snow means that we may breathe them in. An even higher amount of microplastic
was found in the snow around cities.
The high concentrations found in snow samples suggest microplastics, which contain rubber or
chemicals used in synthetic fabrics, may cause significant air pollution.
Are they bad for us Scientists cannot answer this question for now, according to the World Health
Organization. We do know that our bodies cannot take in “large” pieces of microplastics. However, if the
plastics are small enough, they can find ways into our bodies and stay there for a long time, which can be
bad for our health. What’s more, earlier studies have shown that microplastics may contribute to lung
cancer risk, heightening the need to further assess(评估)the risks of taking them in, the study said.
Microplastics have also been found in rivers and oceans around the world. Previous research has
found that they flow over long distances and into our oceans, damaging ecosystems along the way. They
start in our wastewater, when we wash clothes with plastic fibers. The wastewater then flows into rivers
and out to sea, where they are eaten by sea animals. If people then eat these animals, it means that we’re
eating the plastic as well.
28. What does the author mean by “It’s the Arctic’s turn.” in Paragraph 1
A. The Arctic is pictured as an icy land of pure white snow.
B. The Arctic has also been polluted by plastics .
C. The Arctic is the last really clean place on Earth.
D. People still knew nothing about the Arctic.
29. From the second Paragraph we know that microplastics are ____________
A. very tiny pieces of plastics. B. like dust.
C. larger than 5 millimeters. D. mixed with snow.
30. Why do we need to pay greater attention to the risks of absorbing microplastics
A. They can find ways into our bodies. B. They can stay in our body for a long time
C. They may lead to lung cancer. D. They are small enough.
31.What is the best title for the text
A. Plastic snow falls from the sky. B. Microplastics contain rubber or chemicals.
C. The Arctic is an icy land of pure white snow. D. Rivers and oceans are in danger.
D
Tiny as they are, bats have the ability to "see" in the dark by using a special skill called
echolocation(回声定位法). They make noises and wait for sound waves, or an echo, to bounce back off
objects. They can tell the distance of various objects by how quickly the sound waves bounce back off
them. If no sound bounces back, they can then fly forward.
This special ability has been copied in the human world for a long time, such as in submarines and
planes. But apart from helping vehicles “see” where they are, what if blind people could use echolocation
for themselves American Daniel Kish, who is blind, is known as "batman". This isn't because he walks
around in a cape(披风 ) and a mask, but because he has a bat-like ability to locate where he is through
sharp clicks he makes by moving his tongue against the roof of his mouth. Kish is so skilled at
echolocating that he can ride a bike and hike on his own.
Recently, a research carried out at the University of Durham in England shed some light on the
power of human echolocation. Kish, as well as other volunteers, worked with a group of scientists who
studied the way blind people listen to the echoes that they produce from clicks. The team found that
people were capable of hearing even very faint echoes, ones far fainter than had been previously thought.
Lore Thaler, lead scientist of the group, said, "We found that in some conditions, they were really
faint---about 95 percent softer than the actual clicks, but the echolocators were still able to sense this."
Andrew Kolarik, another expert in echolocation, told BBC News that echolocation “can be very
useful at providing information at face or chest height” and could help people “avoid objects like low
hanging branches that might not get detected by the cane or a guide dog".
According to BBC News, echolocation is a skill blind people can acquire and develop, just like
learning a language. As Kolarik said, "Teaching echolocation skills could provide blind people with the
means of exploring new places. "
32. What does "this special ability" in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. The ability to make noises in the dark.
B. The ability to bounce back off objects.
C. The ability to measure the distance quickly.
D. The ability to use sound waves to echolocate.
33. What do we know about Daniel Kish from the text
A. He is fond of riding a bike and hiking alone.
B. He is able to hear echoes he produces from clicks.
C. He is called "Batman” because he looks like a bat.
D. He conducted the experiment to circulate echolocation.
34. What is Kolarik's attitude towards the future use of echolocation in blind people
A. Ambiguous. B. Hopeful. C. Tolerant. D. Doubtful.
35. What's the best title for the text
A. Echolocation in Human World. B. AVery Special Batman.
C.A Breakthrough in Echoing. D. Finding a New Way to “See”.

第二节 (满分 25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Everything about moving day was a puzzle. I didn't know anything about our new building on a new
street. Our old life was broken into pieces and packed up in piled boxes. I wondered if it would ever fit
back together again.
Mom introduced me to our new neighbors, the Chens. Mrs. Chen worked with Mom at the job she'd
just started. Mr. Chen was a famous craftsman from China.
Mom said it was a fresh start, but it felt broken to me. I just wanted things to go back to how they
had been before.
After the first day at my new school, I walked home alone. Mom had told me she had to work. I was
still hoping she'd meet me after the bell. I had to open the door myself with the new key. I felt a bit hungry
and went straight into the kitchen, ripping tape from the packed boxes while I searched for a clean plate.
My fingers slipped, and something went crashing to the ground.
“Benjamin” cried Mom from the doorway. I didn't hear her come in. “What just broke ” she asked,
kneeling to pick up the pieces. In her hands, I recognized the shattered pieces. It was Grandma's bowl. “I
can't believe you broke this,” she said.
“Well, I can't believe we have to live here now! I can't believe I have to switch schools, and I can't
believe you didn't even meet me after my first day.” I ran into my room, slamming the door behind me.
The broom swept across the kitchen floor. Then the click of Mom's bedroom door closed behind her.
I sneaked out into the kitchen and found the fragments in the dustbin. There were so many pieces in here,
but maybe I could put them back together. Turning the pieces, I tried to match them, but this bowl would
never look the same again.
“I'm sorry I yelled,” said Mom, as she opened her door. “Please just throw out the pieces. We can't
make a fresh start with broken things.”
As I wandered down the hall, Mr. Chen was emptying his garbage.

1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
