One of Britain' s most outstanding scientists says the growth in the use of electronic tablets and smart phones is causing people to spend so much time indoors that they need to take regular vitamin D supplements to make up for the lack of sunlight they receive naturally.
Geneticist Steve Jones said he himself was a follower to the cause and urged others to follow. “I never thought I would be a person who would take vitamin supplements;I always thought it was absolute nonsense. But now I take vitamin D every day. Today, because I knew the sun wasn't going to shine, I took an extra one,” he said.
Exposure to the sun is the major source of vitamin D. However, people are spending less and less time outdoors in many areas. The problem is particularly serious in Scotland. "The Scots are the whitest people in the world because their entire body systems are crying out for vitamin D," he said, adding that life expectancy in Scotland is two years shorter than in England or Wales. Multiple sclerosis (多发性硬化症), a medical condition which is often seen in northern Europe, is also higher in Scotland than in England.
Vitamin D helps with the absorption of Ca, which helps keep bones strong. And Jones said the fact that rickets (佝偻病) was making a comeback in Britain after nearly 50 years was another sign of how changing behavior patterns were bringing physical harm.
Jones admitted that concerns over the damaging effects on skin of long-time exposure to the sun were reasonable, but said sunlight was healthy and necessary for the human body, and could help in lowering blood pressure. "If you lie on the beach for an hour, you will drop your blood pressure by about 10 points, because it relaxes your blood vessels (血管). So, get out in the sun while we still can," he said.
24. How are people affected by the rise of technology according to the text
A. They are more sensitive to sunlight
B. They take more vitamin D supplements.
C. They get less vitamin D than before.
D. They become addicted to electronic games.
25. What’s Jones’ attitude towards taking vitamin D supplements now
A. Skeptical. B. Cautious.
C. Worried. D. Supportive.
26. Why are the Scots the whitest people in the world
A. Because they are in great need of sunlight.
B. Because their blood pressure is very low.
C. Because they enjoy a short period of sunshine.
D. Because they are easy to get multiple sclerosis.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Get out and gain more Vitamin D
B. Keep away from tablets and phones
C. Pay attention to the importance of sunlight
D. Take vitamin D supplements to keep healthy

An international group of electronic music composers is taking beats from the dance club to jungles and forests and back, all to help save nature's greatest singers. A Guide to the Birdsong of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean is a new album that includes the sounds of endangered birds. The album will come out next month, whose proceeds will go directly towards efforts to save birds.
The whole project was born out of this idea of trying to combine birdsong, electronic music and conservation. A Guide to the Birdsong of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean was organized by activist, music producer, Robin Perkins. He invited artists from each of the endangered birds 'homelands to build their own songs around the birds’ songs. There are contributions from ten artists in eight different countries.
First single Black Catbird was created by The Garifuna Collective, from Belize. Al Obando, guitarist and producer of the group, always took in national parks and viewed birds when on the road with the band. “There are no trails, and there are no signs there to tell you about what you reseeing,” Obando says. “So we're trying to do something for the birds and nature tourism.”
Another musician who responded to Robin's call is Tamara Montenegro, an artist from Nicaragua. She was shocked to hear of the serious situation of the Guardabarranco after being approached: “This beautiful creature I grew up adoring also faced the influence of the systematic human activities”. In response, she created a song inspired by this bird and the challenges it faces to live naturally.
The new album is the second edition, following on from A Guide to the Birdsong of South America, produced by Robin in 2015. That first album has raised, to date, over $15,000 benefitting conservation projects in South America. As with the first album, all of the money from the sales of the new album will support specific organizations, including Birds Caribbean.

A. It was friendly to humans.

Microplastics(MPS) are tiny bits or threads of plastic, which are often too small to be seen. The current study shows that MPS are constantly coming down in great numbers, even in remote, protected lands.
The scientists didn't set out to study MPS. Dr. Janice Brahney from Utah State University created the experiment to test her equipment, which was meant to track the way helpful chemicals travel to farms through the air. The experiment used buckets (桶)that opened and closed automatically depending on the weather. This allowed the researchers to separate dust that fell during rain storms from dust that was carried in dry air. These "wet" and "dry" buckets were set up at 11 different protected, remote areas in the western US and checked regularly for over a year.
But when Dr. Brahney and her team began to study the dust they had collected, they got a surprise-MPS. By figuring out how much plastic was falling per square meter, the scientists were able to get a good idea of how much plastic was falling in all of the protected areas in the western US every year. The answer was a shocking 907,185 kilograms, which is enough plastic to make over 123 million plastic bottles.
MPS have been found in tap waler, bottled water, and in sea animals that people eat. Now there is growing proof that we are also breathing MPS all the time. Scientists still don't know how eating or breathing MPS will affect people, though many of the chemicals from plastics are known to cause health problems. There are concerns that MPS can get stuck in the lungs, where they may lead to long-term problems.
Dr. Brahney says that for these reasons, it’s important to slop producing and using plastic. She points out that much of the dust the scientists collected was too small to lest. Also, she says that the scientists only studied MPS that fell in protected areas in die western US - about 6% of the US land area.
32. How did Dr. Brahney and her team find microplastics
A. By comparison. B. By chance. C. By origin. D. By design.
33. What wails for scientists to uncover about MPS
A. How to get MPS' helpful chemicals. B. How to separate wet and dry MPS.
C. How taking in MPS will affect people. D. How MPS travel a long distance.
34. What does Dr. Brahney convey about MPS in the last paragraph
A. Most of them stay in the dust.
B. They fall mainly in the Western US.
C. They'll lead to the end of plastic use.
D. Their actual amount is higher than that tested.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. Researchers Arc Observing MPS. B. People Used to Ignore MPS Problem.
C. MPS Are Traveling all over the World. D. MPS Rain Down in Protected Lands.

Dear Alan,
I'm glad to tell you that our class will participate in the English drama performance contest held by our school's drama club next Saturday, but I have difficulty in designing a script. As you are very experienced in script designing and drama performance, I want to ask you to help me design a 300-word script whose theme is school life. I would appreciate it very much if you can finish it before Thursday, which can give me two days to familiarize myself with the script. With your generous help, I am sure we will give a brilliant performance and win the contest.
Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Lihua

Text 10
A pen-friend is a friend you have never met but to whom you write letters. Many people have pen-friends in different countries. They write and receive letters and sometimes keep their pen-friends for many years.Sometimes they meet their pen-friends and they even get married. But usually people do not meet their pen-friends because they live many miles away from each other. Most pen-friends are between children living in different countries. They write to one another to find out about the way of life in other countries.Sometimes they write so that they can practise using another’s languages.
Letters between pen-friends are usually full of informa-tion about the writer’s own country: his own town, school, interests and so on.Pen-friends often send one another stamps and coins and picture postcards of their own coun-tries.The best place to find a pen-friend is in a children’s magazine. Most magazines for young people list the names and addresses of children in different countries, who are looking for pen-friends;for example:John Smith, aged 14,living at 16 New Road,London,England, wants a pen-friend in China. He is interested in collecting stamps and listening to music.
