Exercise 12
Although being famous might sound like a dream come true, today's stars, feeling like zoo animals, face pressures that few of us can imagine. They are at the center of much of the world's attention. Paparazzi (狗仔队)camp outside their homes, cameras ready. Tabloids (小 报)publish thrilling stories about their personal lives. Just imagine not being able to do anything without being photographed or interrupted for a signature. According to psychologist Christina Villarreal, celebrities—famous people一worry constantly about their public appearance. Eventually, they start to lose track of who they really are, seeing themselves the way their fans imagine them, not as the people they were before everyone knew their names. "Over time," Villarreal says, "they feel separated and lonely ." The phenomenon of tracking celebrities has been around for ages. In the 4th century B. C., painters followed Alexander the Great into battle, hoping to picture his victories for his admirers. When Charles Dickens visited America in the 19th century, his sold-out readings attracted thousands of fans, leading him to complain about his lack of privacy. Tabloids of the 1920s and 1930s ran articles about film-stars in much the same way that modern tabloids and websites do. Being a public figure today, however, is a lot more difficult than it used to be. Superstars cannot move about without worrying about photographers with modern cameras. When, they say something silly or do something ridiculous, there is always the Internet to spread the news in minutes and keep their “story” alive forever. If fame is so troublesome, why aren't all celebrities running away from it The answer is that there are still ways to deal with it. Some stars stay calm by surrounding themselves with trusted friends and family or by escaping to remote places away from big cities. They focus not on how famous they are but on what they love to do or whatever made them famous in the first place. Sometimes a few celebrities can get a little justice. Still, even stars who enjoy full justice often complain about how hard their lives are. They are tired of being famous already.
Celebrities who are at the center of the world's attention worry about their public appearance and start to lose track of who they really are." 第二段首句“The phenomenon of tracking celebrities has been around for ages.” 第三段首句“Being a public figure today, however, is a lot more difficult than it used to be." 通过整合关键词块"ways to deal with it, tired"得岀第四段段落大意“There are ways to deal with it, but some still feel tired of being famous."。
Chased around all the time, celebrities strive to live up to the public expectations, some even losing themselves on the road to fame.(要点1) The craze for following celebrities started long ago.(要点2) However, it is much harder to be a star these days due to advanced cameras and the Internet.(要点3) Fortunately, some stars have worked out solutions to reducing such pressure though some claim they are stressed out.(要点 4)
要点1中,"chased around all the time"替换原文的"at the center of much of the world's attention”,用“live up to the public expectations"简要概括名人们受成名所累,过于关注自身的公众形象,并用独立主格“some even losing themselves on the road to fame”替换原文的"start to lose track of who they really are"。 要点4中,fortunately引出一些solutions,同时用though转折表明一些名人心力交瘁;最后用"some claim they are stressed out"替换原文的“stars... complain how hard... They are tired of being famous already."。
Celebrities and other famous people cannot lead lives of normal people. / The current extensive concentration on the personal lives of famous people by media imposes immense pressure on these people. / They may be forced to live in their own little secluded world. / Being famous can stop celebrities from indulging in the little pleasures of life.
