This is a true story. Tristin Saghin enjoyed the movie “Black Hawk Down” very much, which is about the
conflict in Somalia. The battle scenes and the exciting rescues of people who are dying interested him greatly.
There was just one problem: Tristin was only 9 years old, and it was thought that movie was not for children.

Pulled from the pool and placed on the ground, the child wasn’t breathing. The family called the ambulance

and saved her life.

Jason Barnes is a young musician who lives in Georgia. Eight years ago, Jason lost this right arm just below
his elbow in an accident. Jason got a prosthetic (假体的)arm. But this arm could only do a few things. Jason still
wanted to play music. So he went to see Gil Weinberg, who makes musical robots. To play the piano, Jason
needed five fingers that could move just the way he wanted. This was a big challenge.
Living arms move when muscles respond to commands from the brain. When you think “open fingers”,
your brain sends electrical signals along nerves. Some prosthetic arms use sensors(传感器) to try to read these
nerve signals. But they don't work very well. Nerves are tiny, and their signals are faint. Sensors might be able to
tell that you want to move a finger. But they aren't very good at telling which finger you want to move.
Jason doesn’t have his hand anymore, but he still has the arm muscles that move his fingers. When Jason
thinks about moving his fingers, those muscles still move. To read the muscles inside Jason’s arm, the team used
ultrasound(超声波 ). The roboticists taught a computer to read the ultrasound sensor as Jason thought about
moving his fingers. The computer learned which muscles moved when Jason wanted his fingers to move in a
certain way. Thinking about moving his fingers makes the muscles in his upper arm move. The computer sees the
moving muscles and tells the motors in Jason's robotic fingers to move the right way.
The team hopes the “Skywalker hand”, their prosthesis, will someday work as well as a real hand. The
sensors, motors, and computers inside the hand are not complex. But they need to get smaller and cheaper before
lots of these hands can be made. Weinberg and his team are working on this right now. Soon, they hope that
anyone who loses a hand will be able to get a new robotic one with five fingers that they can move just by
thinking.
28. Why did Jason visit Weinberg?
A. To save his own life. B. To learn to play music.
C. To study musical robots. D. To replace his prosthetic arm.
29. What makes the invention of the robotic hand possible
A. Moving muscles are simpler to spot than nerves.
B. Nerve searching techniques have developed fast.
C. Ultrasound sensors vary from finger to finger.
D. Motors are much quicker to operate.
30. What do Weinberg and his team expect of the Skywalker hand?
A. It’ll be easy to make. B. It’ll be customer-friendly.
C. It’ll be better than real hands. D. It’ll be controlled by computers.
31. What’s the writer’s attitude towards the invention of the robotic hand
A. Negative B. Tolerant C. Objective D. Unconcerned
D
Ever called a movie theater to find out show-time Or called a customer service center for help Chances are
you didn't speak to a human being. You probably gave commands to an Automated Speech Recognition (ASR)
system. These types of systems are efficient money-saving tools that allow companies to address many customer
concerns with minimum human intervention.
The technology for such a system has advanced greatly since its appearance in the 1950s. One significant
recent achievement is the launching of virtual personal assistants (VPAs) on mobile phones. The most
well-known of these is Apple’s iPhone VPA, Siri. If you tell Siri that you want to schedule lunch with a friend,
“she” can set the appointment on your phone in seconds. The VPA can also hold a basic “conversation” with a
sense of humor. However, it can only be set off when the human user speaks certain key phrases or words.
While the potential for communication between a human and a machine may seem exciting, this possibility
concerns some people. Some experts worry about people’s attachment to these machines and fear that the art of
successful human-to-human conversation will be undeveloped in younger generations. They worry that people
高二英语--共 8页,第 4页
won’t be able to display the right emotion or tone in conversations because they haven’t been practicing those
skills. Others fear that machines will take over functions that were traditionally performed by humans, such as
customer service.
Another concern often associated with the development of new technology is the invasion of privacy. When
people use certain speech recognition applications, they leave behind an audio track of their speech. When you
ask a VPA for directions, your speech is often sent and saved to a remote server for processing. This digital
information may lead to data mining, or the collection of large quantities of personal data.
For now, however, the continuing evolution of ASR software is thrilling to behold. Asking for and acquiring
information from an automated source has never been easier. Leading companies in the speech recognition world
will make human communication with machines as seamless as possible — in other words, just like
communicating with another human.
32.What can we say about Apple’s Siri
A.It’s a helpful VPA. B.It first appeared in the 1950s.
C.It’s the most advanced ASR system. D.It has the same sense of humor as humans.
33.What are Paragraphs 3 and 4 mainly about
A.The broad definition of ASR. B.Potential problems with ASR.
C.The fast development of ASR. D.Movements against using ASR.
34.What is the author's attitude towards the future of ASR
A.Worried. B.Doubtful. C.Hopeful. D.Indifferent.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.Talking to Technology C.The Art of Conversation
B.The Application of Siri D.VPAs on Mobile Phones
第二节(共 5小题,每小题 2.5分,满分 12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
In a recent survey of more than 1,300 students, 96% said they feel worried about exams. 36 There is no
doubt that anyone wants to get high marks in exams, so students should learn to deal with exams as calmly and
effectively as possible.
Develop a plan. 37 However, most of the students don’t plan how they’ll be prepared. They just tell
themselves they’ll study as much as possible — then they’ll “hope for the best”. This isn’t a wise way. Preparing
for an exam is like taking on an important project. It’s important to outline a plan for how you’ll get ready for an
exam.
Change the sleep time early. Many exams are held in the early morning — a time when students don’t
usually feel very awake. If you’ll be taking a morning exam, start sleeping earlier at least one week before the
exam so that your body will have time to adjust(适应). 38 Besides, it’s also a good idea to get eight hours
of sleep each night.
39 It’s common for students to spend the 10 minutes before an exam doing some last-minute studying.
This may provide some comfort, but overall it does more harm than good. The 10 minutes before an exam will
make no difference. If you study during this time, you’ll become more stressed and worried. 40
A. Study until the last minute.
B. Don’t do any last-minute studying.
C. This high percentage isn’t surprising.
D. This will have a bad influence on your performance.
E. This will help you become more confident in the exams.
F. If not, your mind won’t be in a good state to take the exam.
G. It is of great importance for students to make a proper plan before an exam.

“If mum finds out that I'm going to the beach, I'll be in big trouble.” I said to myself softly in a low voice.
I went downstairs slowly and tried to walk casually into the kitchen. As I was walking towards the back door,
mum asked without looking up from her dish-washing, “Where are you going ” I answered back without
hesitation, “I am going to the garden to play.” After I got out of the kitchen, I breathed a sign of relief. My plan
had worked out fine so far. I climbed the fence and jumped onto the muddy field next to my house and started
running towards the bus stop at top speed.
After half an hour I was at the beach scanning the crowd for my friends, Jimmy and Bobby. Two young men
were racing in the canoes (独木舟). After a while, I saw them near a coconut tree. I ran towards them and got into
my swimming trunk (游泳裤). For about an hour, we played volleyball happily.

Suddenly, Bobby hit the ball too hard and the ball fell into the sea. Just as Bobby was going to pick up the
ball, the tide came in and carried the ball further and further away from the shore. I wanted to show off (炫耀) my
swimming skills so I declared to help get the ball for him.
I dived into the water and started swimming at a steady pace. After swimming for about ten minutes, I
became tired but when I saw that the ball was only a few feet away from me, I put in an extra burst of speed.
However, just as I was going to get the ball, a very strong current swept the ball further away from me. At that
moment, a string of weed (海草) tangled (缠绕) up with my feet and I could not swim properly.
I struggled to keep afloat but it was no use. “If I had listened to my parents, this would never have happened,”
I thought silently.
注意:

Finally, after struggling for a minute or two, I still got pulled underwater. I told myself I should never give
up. Then I pulled the weed again with great efforts. The weed finally broke. I swam back to the surface to take a
deep breath. I saw two young men in the canoes, racing each other. I was exhausted and shouted for help. The
two men saw me and raced towards me. By the time they reached me, I had been already unconscious.
When I woke up, I was in an empty room lying on a bed. It was not until a doctor came into the room that I
realized that I was in the hospital. Jimmy and Bobby told me the two young men brought me to the shore and sent
me to the hospital. After a few minutes, my parents with half angry and half worried faces walked in. My parents
scolded me for running out of the house secretly but were also glad that I was not seriously injured. I will never
forget that terrifying experience. Neither will I ever want to show off again.
