In America, when the eighth graders leave the middle school, they are often worried about moving to the high school. It is a hard time for them, but it can be an exciting one as well. To make it easier, students need to get familiar with their school.
Even though they’ve done this already in the middle school, it’s still important to find where their classrooms are. Most schools take students to the high school for a visit at the end of their eighth grade year. And, most schools also have a freshman (新生) speech for parents and students before the first year begins. Sometimes the main office will give away a map of the school. This can help students and parents to find different places in the school.
One way to know your high school more and make new friends is to join a club or play a sport. Schools often offer chances to join different clubs and sports. Fall activities begin in August before the first day of school. If you are not interested in sports, there are clubs for any interest, such as drama, dance, chess, photography, community service, etc. These clubs allow students from different grades. By joining an activity, students can find new friendships, not to mention improving their chances in future college applications (申请). The school office will have a list of activities offered at the school and information on how to join them.
What’s more, to have a great start to a high school year, students can write down some of their worries, and ask for help from teachers and school workers.
24. According to the text, most students feel _______when entering the high school.
A. excited B. nervous C. lonely D. disappointed
25. Which of the following is TRUE about the school clubs
A. There are fewer students from higher grades in the school clubs.
B. The school clubs in high school only welcome sports fans.
C. Summer activities begin before school starts.
D. The school office can help new students join school clubs.
26. When do many schools take students to visit their new high school
A. Before the eighth grade year starts.
B. Right after the high school year starts.
C. At the end of their eighth grade year.
D. At the beginning of the new term in the high school.
27. What is the purpose of this text
A. To tell the new students how to learn in high school.
B. To introduce new schools. C. To give the teachers some advice.
D. To give advice to new high school students.

I don’t think I can recall a time when I wasn’t aware of the beauty of the ocean. Growing up in Australia, I had the good fortune of having the sea at my side. The first time I went to Halfmoon Bay, I suddenly had the feeling of not being able to feel the ground with my feet anymore.
For my 10th birthday, my sister and I were taken out to the Great Barrier Reef. There were fish in different colors, caves and layers of coral (珊瑚). They made such an impression on me. When I learned that only one percent of Australia’s Coral Sea was protected, I was shocked. Australian marine (海洋的) life is particularly important because the reefs (暗礁) have more marine species than any other country on earth. But sadly, only 45% of the world’s reefs are considered healthy.
This statistic (数据) is depressing, so it’s important for us to do everything to protect them. The hope that the Coral Sea remains a complete ecosystem has led me to take action. I’ve become involved with the Protect Our Coral Sea activity, which aims to create the largest marine park in the world. It would serve as a place where the ocean’s species will all have a safe place forever.
Together, Angus and I created a little video and we hope it will inspire people to be part of the movement. Angus also shares many beautiful childhood memories of the ocean as a young boy, who grew up sailing, admiring the beauty of the ocean, and trying to find the secrets of ocean species.
28. What can we learn about the author from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1
A. He seldom went sailing at the sea.
B. He forgot his experiences about the ocean.
C. He never went back to his hometown.
D. He had a wonderful impression of Halfmoon Bay.
29. What is Australian marine life like according to the second paragraph
A. It is escaping from the Coral Sea gradually.
B. It depends on reefs for living greatly.
C. It may be faced with danger.
D. It is protected better than that in other oceans.
30. What is the aim of the Protect Our Coral Sea activity
A. To contribute to a complete ecosystem.
B. To prevent more marine species being endangered.
C. To set up a large nature reserve for reefs.
D. To raise more teenagers’ environmental awareness.
31. Why do Angus and the author create a little video
A. To ask more people to take action to protect the marine species.
B. To inspire more people to study the secret of the ocean.
C. To share their childhood experiences about the ocean.
D. To bring back to people their memory of ocean species.

Hi Irene,
I am so upset with my best friend because she refuses to accept my apology or listen to me. She won’t forgive me no matter what I say. She says there’s no way back and I should let it go.
Signed,
Maya
Hi Maya,
I can understand how upsetting it is to lose a best friend. Best friends have an emotional investment (感情投资) in the friendship. They also spend a great deal of time together, so breakups leave a huge sadness in both friends’ lives.
You haven’t shared the details of the argument or misunderstanding you had with your friend but problems may appear unexpectedly in all relationships. Sincere apologies can often smooth things over. In fact, they can make the relationship stronger.
Why won’t your friend forgive you Here are a few possibilities:
·The mistake was so serious (e. g. a poor judgment) that it was unforgivable;
·Your friend over-reacted (反应过激) for uncertain reasons (e. g. perhaps because of her past or other things going on in her life now);
·This was one of a series of mistakes or misunderstandings, a final straw (稻草) that led your friend to say there was no way back.
You did the right thing by apologizing. Now you have to take a step back and give your friend the time she needs to cool off. You could try writing to her a note if you want to explain yourself but avoid apologizing repeatedly.
If she doesn’t respond or change her mind, there’s not much more that you can do. It takes two persons to sustain a close friendship.
Hope this helps and that you begin to heal from this loss.
Best,
Irene
32. What does Irene mean in Paragraph 1 of her letter
A. Breakups can ruin people’s lives.
B. People put lots of efforts into friendships.
C. Best friends always spend their time together.
D. The emotional investment is the most valuable.
33. What’s the possible reason why Maya’s friend doesn’t forgive her
A. Maya often over-reacts to the mistakes.
B. Maya’s friend is worried about Maya’s past life.
C. Maya is likely to make more than one mistake.
D. Maya’s friend has nothing to do with the mistake.
34. What does Irene advise Maya to do
A. Always do the right things.
B. Avoid explaining what happened.
C. Give her friend time to calm down.
D. Write a note to apologize repeatedly.
35. What does the underlined sentence mean
A. Maya should carry on the friendship.
B. There are two persons in the friendship.
C. Both of them want to keep the friendship.
D. Maya can give up if her friend doesn’t respond.
第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How to make conversation with a group of strangers
One of the most common fears is speaking to strangers. While most people don’t naturally enjoy talking to strangers, it is an art that you can learn. When you learn how to make conversation with a group of strangers, you never have to stand by yourself at a party again.
36 Say hi and tell the group your name. Don’t focus on how boring you think you sound. Remember that others in the group are probably just as self-conscious as you are. Doing so to a group of strangers may result in making others feel comfortable enough to open up. They may secretly be glad that you made the first move.
Practice talking to as many strangers as possible throughout the day. 37 Soon it will be second nature for you to walk up to a group of strangers and introduce yourself.
Make a comment about something interesting in the environment. This may be something as simple as the decorations for the party or the band providing the entertainment. 38
Ask for an opinion. People enjoy giving their opinion on any subject. 39 Asking for an opinion works immediately to break the ice and encourages the entire group to talk with you.
Learn to listen. Making conversation is about more than trying to find the right words to say. 40 And then find out the next thing you should say. Make sure that your response invites another response.
A. Introduce yourself.
B. Try to catch strangers’ attention.
C. Ask about book ideas, gift ideas or dining ideas.
D. Each time you do this, you will feel more confident.
E. Develop the habit of listening to others carefully to understand them.
F. A comment like this gives the group something in common to discuss.
G. Ask the group to share what they do for a living or whether they enjoy their work.
