Twenty five years ago, most young Britons wanted a career in law, to be a doctor, or, if they were creative enough, to take up singing. But today, things stand different.
According to a survey by Tesco Mobile, a UK company, the “dream job” of young people aged between 16 and 25 in the UK is a video blogger, or “vlogger (视频博主)”. The survey, carried out among 1,002 people, found that as much as 40 percent of them put the vlogger as their number one choice on a list of ideal careers.
This change is undoubtedly the result of the Internet and social media. They have made it so much easier to reach the audience of the world, without having to enter a career in show business in the traditional way.
In the past, the big stars were trained by the Hollywood studios; now, anyone with a computer camera can become a star.Vloggers are the big stars of today because they are normal people interacting (交流) with their fans about everyday life.
However, what people see is only the bright side of being a vlogger and they fail to notice the fact that only those who are successful earn fame and fortune. For every success there are hundreds of others who never get off the starting line. There are the dreams that come true and the dreams that remain dreams forever.
Although being vloggers is popular, some young people choose to follow careers that don't necessarily earn them fame, but allow them to make good use of the Internet to share their hobbies. Young Israeli David Leshaw, for example, runs a business called the Finishers Club. It's an online platform (平台) for runners to keep a record of their races. His job allows him to express his enthusiasm and is also a learning experience. And that's enough for him.

While the start of a new school year is always exciting, this year was even more so for some elementary school students in Auckland, New Zealand. They became the world's first kids to be “taught” by a digital teacher, Will. Will is just an avatar that appears on the student's desktop, tablet, or smartphone screen, not a human like robot walking around the classroom.
Auckland energy company Vector and AI company Soul Machines worked together to develop Will, which has been modelled after the human brain and nervous system, allowing it to perform human like behaviour. The digital teacher is currently assigned to teach Vector's “Be sustainable with energy”， a free programme for Auckland elementary schools.
Just like the humans it replaced, Will is able to instantly react to the students' responses to the topic. Thanks to a webcam (网络摄像头) and microphone, the avatar not only responds to questions the kids may have, but also picks up non verbal cues (非口头提示). For instance, if a student smiles at Will, he responds by smiling back. This two way interaction not only helps capture the students' attention, but also allows the programme's developers to monitor their engagement, and make changes if needed.
Vector's Chief Digital Officer, Nikhil Ravishankar says, “What was fascinating to me was the reaction of the children to Will. The way they look at the world is so creative and different, and Will really captured their attention. ”
Will, in place since August 2018, has been a great success thus far. However, regardless of how popular it becomes, Will is unlikely to replace human educators any time soon. For one, the avatar's knowledge base is seriously restricted. But more importantly, even the smartest digital avatars could never predict and react to all the unexpected situations that educators have to deal with on a daily basis.
