Born into poverty on 21 May 1799, Mary Anning had to work hard from a young age. Her parents had 10 children, of whom only two survived childhood --- Mary and her elder brother Joseph. Mary’s own survival was said by her parents to be a wonder. At the age of 15 months, a sudden rainstorm hit the shelter, where Mary, her babysitter, and two children stayed. A lightning strike killed them all except Mary.
She didn’t have formal education and was only taught to read at a Sunday school. Raised in the seaside holiday village of Lyme Regis in Dorset, Mary and Joseph made a living by selling fossils to holidaymakers at their father’s waterfront booth.
Her life changed in 1811 when Joseph noticed bones mixed together with rock. Unknown to them, this was the first ever discovery of an ichthyosaurus ( 鱼 龙 ), a marine lizard from the Triassic period. Anning noted down every find she made, and after failing to find any new fossils for over a year, in 1821 she made her next discovery, digging up three more ichthyosaur skeletons. This was followed two years later by an even more impressive find --- a complete plesiosaur(蛇颈龙). This was so extraordinary that many leading scientists declared it a counterfeit, unwilling to believe that an uneducated 24-year-old could find such remarkable remains. Additionally, society at the time was highly religious and many rejected these discoveries as they conflicted with the teachings of the Bible.
Despite the setback, Anning continued to make more shocking revelations. Anning also dug up fossilized shit, which made experts know the diets of prehistoric creatures. But her biggest find of all was the first complete skeleton of a pterosaur in 1828.
All of Mary Anning’s discoveries helped influence the study of paleontology(古生物学) as scientists began to take an increased interest in fossilized animals and plants. Her work also encouraged people to question the history of the Earth in more detail and encouraged girls and those from poor backgrounds by proving that they could succeed in scientific study, a profession mainly controlled by wealthy upper-class men.
4. What can we learn about Mary Anning from the first two paragraphs
A. It was not easy for her to survive.
B. She didn’t experience the lightning strike.
C. She didn’t get basic knowledge about science.
D. It was impossible for her to find a job outside.
5. What does the underlined word “counterfeit” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Something not needed.
B. Something not valuable.
C. Something not authentic.
D. Something not beneficial.
6. Anning’s findings of fossilized shit helped ________.
A. her get international fame
B. make her become more professional
C. experts better understand prehistoric creatures
D. convince the leading scientists of her discovery
7. The last paragraph mainly wants to show ________.
A. the process of her findings
B. the significance of her discoveries
C. the discoveries of fossilized animals
D. the background of her scientific study

Siri is a virtual assistant, applied to electronic devices with the ability to recognize humans' speech, answer questions, make recommendations and so on. Ask Siri if she's a woman. Go ahead; ask about her gender. She'll tell you that she' s "genderless". So are many other virtual assistants. But, man, do they ever sound a lot like women Yes. Culturally, we think of them as ladies, too.
If we advocate gender diversity in other areas of daily life, why does our tech sound so female It would be easy to blame male designers. Perhaps it's influenced by science fiction. But the biggest reason rests in social science. “Research indicates there's likely to be greater acceptance of female speech,” says Karl MacDorman, an associate professor at Indiana University who specializes in human-computer communication. MacDorman and his team played male and female voices to people of both genders, and then asked them to identify which they preferred. They reported that both women and men said male voices sounded seemingly indifferent, in comparison.
Why do we have such prejudice Stanford University communication professor Clifford Nass says that people tend to consider female voices to be helpful for them to solve their problems by themselves, while they view male voices as those from authority figures who tell them the answers to their problems.
This finding suggests that companies will make a better impression on a broader group of customers with a woman's voice — but not just any voice. It has to be based on a brand's personality. Greg Pal, vice president of business development at Nuance Communications, Inc. insists that some brands choose male speakers. He turned on his iPhone and pulled up the Domino's Pizza app, which has an assistant, Dom. He sounded like his high school English teacher — educated. That's right for a brand attempting to appeal to guys ordering pies before the big game.
As voice technology improves, though, designers say diversity will too. Many devices already let you customize a voice interface (界面). Siri can become a sir as you want it — if you take the time to reprogram it.
8. Why does Siri sound female
A. Because it is designed by a female.
B Because it is related to social science.
C. Because it is affected by gender prejudice.
D. Because it is influenced by science fiction.
9. The strength of a virtual assistant with a female voice is that ________.
A. it can convey authorities B. it can give direct answers
C. it can show warmer feelings D. it can give clearer answers
10. The example of Dom in Domino's Pizza app is used to show that ________.
A. the female voice better attracts customers
B. the voice needs to match the product’s personality
C. the male voice begins to be accepted by customers
D. the male voice can be designed to sound like a teacher
11. What is the suitable title of this passage
A. Siri can become a sir.
B. Why does Siri sound like a women
C. Siri --- a good virtual assistant.
D. Is Siri genderless
D
Innovations are not always welcome. In 1589 William Lee made his way to the English court, hoping to be granted a patent for his invention, a knitting machine. Queen Elizabeth I turned him down: "Consider what the invention could do to my poor subjects," she commanded. " It would assuredly bring ruin to them by robbing them of employment. "
The fears of Good Queen Bess have echoed down the centuries from the Luddites, which destroyed textile machinery in the early 19th century, to John F. Kennedy, who warned of the dangers of automation during his presidential campaign of 1960. In the 21st century the concerns have switched to robots and artificial intelligence; 30% of American workers believe their jobs are likely to be replaced by robots and computers in their lifetime. In the past the relationship between machines and human labor has been driven by two factors: the substituting effect, which caused people to lose jobs, and the complementing effect, which allowed employees to do their work more productively. Mr. Susskind worries that, in the future, the substituting effect will take over. Advances in AI have been so rapid that machines will eventually be better than people at most activities, he says, and so will be the "default (默 认 ) choice" for performing them. A few highly paid humans will still be employed, but the rest will either struggle to find work or fall into the "precariat", stuck in jobs that are not just poorly paid but also unstable and stressful.
This depressing view of the impact of technology is plausible But so is a more optimistic outlook, as the economist Roger Bootle showed in his book. Mr. Bootle argued that AI and robotics would improve productivity and economic growth, and release people from performing the most lengthy tasks. As for employment, there will always be demand for services with the human touch. Perhaps, the truth is that it is impossible to be sure whether the latest advances will in the end have mainly good or bad economic effects.
12. What's the purpose of the examples in Paragraphs 1 and 2
A. To tell people how many inventions are made.
B. To remind people how important the machines are.
C. To show some people's attitude toward new inventions.
D. To demonstrate the potential dangers to human beings.
13. What is Mr. Susskind concerned about
A. The complementing effect will make people productive.
B. Many people will be unemployed for the substituting effect.
C. American workers will be replaced by robots because of the complementing effect.
D. Employees will work less productively on account of the substituting effect.
14. What do we know about AI according to Roger Bootle
A. The impact of AI is depressing.
B. He showed a pessimistic attitude to AI in his book.
C. AI and robotics would harm productivity and economic growth.
D. AI and robotics release people from performing long and tiring tasks.
15. What is the author's attitude toward AI
A. Positive B. Negative
C. Objective D. Indifferent

A 5. C 6. C 7. B

B. Because it is related to social science.

Indifferent

故as后加a。
It is + n.+for sb. to do sth.
故had改为have。
