Whether you are young or young at heart, it is never too late to change, or take in some new and better practices into your daily life. Here are some wise lessons that I wish I knew when I was younger.
I used to be worried about what others thought of me. Finally, I came to realize that if you’re wasting too much time looking for respect from others, then you will not have time to finish all you desire. Everyone has an opinion, but in fact others’ opinions about you are based more on their history and perceptions(观念) than anything you’re actually doing. So depend on your own assessment(评估) of you rather than others’.
Enjoy every moment of today. Don’t wait to do or enjoy something. Don’t tell yourself you will do it tomorrow. If it is important to you, then do it today. Pay attention to what is happening now, the task at hand and to all of the choices you make today, big and small. Our future is set by what we decide and do today.
What happened yesterday is over. You can not change it, so let it go. Don’t waste your energy considering anger or unhappiness. It only stops you from moving forward in life.
Look for the good in people. Celebrate the happy moments, big and small. Search for the chances for growth. Give helpful encouragement rather than unwanted criticism(批评). Be helpful whenever possible.
In a word, life is serious but you can still be delighted and hopeful. Otherwise, what’s the point
5. We shouldn’t worry too much about what others think of us because________.
A. our own assessment is enough
B. their opinions about us may be wrong
C. we are improving ourselves everyday
D. we don’t always need other people’s help
6. In the author’s opinion, we should________.
A. never forget our hard times
B. never look for respect from others
C. change our lifestyle from time to time
D. always complete important work in time
7. How should we deal with other people according to the author
A. Try to help them. B. Never criticize them.
C. Show thanks to them. D. Make friends with them.
8. The passage is most probably written by ________.
A. a clever teenager
B. a middle school student
C. an old man with rich experience of life
D. an expert on human relationships
C
The influence of America is increasing in my country. Spanish people drink Coca Cola, wear blue jeans, watch Hollywood movies, listen to American music, and eat fast food, and they do these things every day.
I think that American movies are a good way to spread American culture because people are often influenced by what they see in the movies. Most of the programs and documentaries (纪录片) we watch on TV are from America, and most of the movies we go to see are made in Hollywood.
In the last few years, the government has tried to protect the Spanish movies. Now, in our cinemas, at least twenty percent of the movies which are shown must be from Spain or from other countries in Europe.
American culture is a part of Spanish life now. It’s certain that many things from America are as much a part of people’s lives as Spanish things. For example, Coca Cola is as familiar to everybody as any typical Spanish product. I’ve known about Coca Cola for my whole life.
However, it’s different with Western fast food. For example, I don’t think McDonald’s is as successful in Spain as it is in other countries. In my opinion, one of the reasons may be the lifestyle of the Spanish people. The Spanish people normally eat at home.
On the other hand, maybe McDonald’s hamburgers will eventually replace the famous Spanish tapas. It’s true that in every city in Spain you can find a McDonald’s, and it is more popular among the Spanish children than among the adults. In any case, it’s obvious that American culture is becoming more and more a part of our lives every day.
9. From the first paragraph we can know that ________.
A. the influence of America on Spain can be found everywhere
B. most Spanish people don’t like to listen to their own music
C. fast food spreads from Spain to the United States
D. some Spanish actors go to America to improve their acting skills
10. What plays an important part in the spreading of American culture in Spain
A. American novels. B. Hollywood movies.
C. McDonald’s. D. American music.
11. Why did the government set some rules for the films shown in Spain
A. To protect foreign culture in Spain.
B. To earn more money from Spanish films.
C. To limit the number of foreign movies.
D. To unite the European Community.
12. Why does the author think that McDonald’s is not as successful as it is in other countries
A. Its fast food contains too much fat.
B He thinks it is unhealthy.
C. Spanish people seldom eat out.
D. Spanish adults don’t like its fast food.
D
St. Patrick’s Day is a very well-known Irish national holiday, which is celebrated not only in Ireland but all around the world. It honors St. Patrick who brought Christianity (基督教) to Ireland in the fifth century.
Falling on the 17th of March, the holiday is celebrated worldwide, with people watching a St. Patrick’s Day parade, dancing and singing in Irish bars (酒吧), and just generally having a good time.
Green is the traditional Irish color. Because of this, people wear green clothes on that day. Some even color their hair or paint their faces green. Some bars even serve green beer. Many people eat the traditional Irish meal of corned beef and cabbage, and many attend St. Patrick’s Day parties.
On St. Patrick’s Day, pictures of shamrocks (三叶草) and leprechauns (精灵) are hung everywhere. St. Patrick is believed to have used the shamrock, with its three leaves, to teach his followers. You are thought to be lucky if you find a shamrock with four leaves.
Leprechauns are little Irish spirits. The Irish say that if a leprechaun is caught by a human, he will show the person where he hides his pot of gold.
St. Patrick is often said to be the first person to have introduced Christianity to Ireland. He was probably a Roman brought up in northern England. He is most commonly known for driving the snakes out of Ireland. Some stories tell that he stood on a hill and used a wooden stick to drive the snakes into the sea. It is true that Ireland has no snakes, but no one knows if these stories are true.
13. The second paragraph is mainly about ________.
A. when St. Patrick’s Day came into being
B. when and where people celebrate St. Patrick’s Day
C. how people celebrate St. Patrick’s Day
D. what is going on in Irish bars on St. Patrick’s Day
14. On St. Patrick’s Day, pictures of leprechauns are probably hung to ________.
A. bring good luck B. scare bad spirits away
C. honor St. Patrick D. collect money
15. We can learn from the last paragraph that ________.
A. snakes lived in the sea around Ireland
B. there are no snakes in Ireland now
C. St. Patrick’s duty was to drive snakes away
D. St. Patrick was the master of snakes

B. He thinks it is unhealthy.
C. Spanish people seldom eat out.
D. Spanish adults don’t like its fast food.
【答案】9. A 10. B 11. C 12. C

【答案】13. C 14. A 15. B

【答案】参考范文:
But no more helicopters came and it was getting dark again. Jane was so tired, hungry, and extremely frightened. She thought to herself, “If only I had not quarrelled with Tom. Where is Tom He must have made the emergency call. What I need is enough courage. If I continue my spirits tomorrow, I will be likely to guide the helicopter.” Lying beside the river, she fell asleep very soon. Suddenly, she heard the shouts of tigers, which made her scared to death. After she held her breath for a few minutes, everything was quiet again. In the terrible darkness, she slept again.
It was daybreak when Jane woke up. She caught sight of a fisherman at a distance, with whose help she climbed to an open area. To her great joy, a helicopter flew overhead just at that moment. The fisherman helped flag her yellow blouse wildly. This did catch the rescuers' attention! Jane was rescued. Seeing Tom, she told him how much she missed him. Never would they be away from each other. Tom gave her the warmest and longest hug she had ever received.
