To walk is to be human. We' re the only creature that gets around by standing up and putting one foot in front of the other. In the more than 4 million years that humanity' s ancestors have been using only two legs for walking, our ability to walk upright has allowed humankind to travel great distances and survive changing climates, environments and landscapes.
But walking is more than just transportation. It also happens to be really good for us. Countless scientific studies have found that this simple act can provide a number of health benefits and help people live longer. In fact, a walking routine-if done properly-might be the only exercise people need.
How much walking should one aim for You’ve likely heard we need 10,000 steps a day. That’s about 5 miles. But contrary to popular belief, this recommendation doesn’t come from science. Instead, it stems from a 1960s advertising campaign to promote a pedometer(计步器)in Japan. Perhaps because it's a round number and easy to remember, it stuck.
Since the 1960s, researchers have studied the 10,000 - steps - a - day standard and have turned up mixed results. Although 10,000 steps is certainly a healthy and worthwhile goal, it’s not a one - size - fits - all recommendation.
For instance, a recent Harvard University study involving more than 16,000 senior women found that those who got at least 4,400 steps a day greatly reduced their risk of dying early when compared with less active women. The study also noted that these benefits continued up to 7, 500 steps before leveling off. This 7,500 mark isn't surprising: It’s in line with common public health recommendations, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation of 150 minutes of moderate (适度的) physical activity a week for adults.
Research has shown that picking up the pace might be a good idea too---fast enough to raise your heart rate, even if just for a short burst.
8. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. A walking routine B. The popular belief
C. A round number D. The pedometer Ads.
9. How much walking should one aim for according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
A. 4400 steps a day. B. 150 minutes a day. C. 10,000 steps a day. D. 7,500 steps a day.
10. Which statement will the author believe
A Walking 10000 steps a day fits us all who lack exercise.
B. The benefits of walking depend on frequency, intensity and duration
C. To be healthy, walking great distances is strongly suggested
D. Walking is the only exercise that unhealthy people need.
11. What is the best title of the passage
A. The Only Exercise You Need-Walking
B. Walking Is One Of The Best Exercises For Health
C. 10,000 - Step Goal Is More Marketing Than Science
D. Walk Often, Walk Fast And Walk Long
D
We have all experienced the force of gravity. It is what happens to you when you jump up into the air. Disappointingly, we tend to fall right back down to the ground. But what if we could switch gravity off What will happen if the gravity vanishes
Buckey, an astronomer, says that our bodies are adapted to an Earth-like gravitational environment. If we spend time living where gravity is different, such as on board a space station, our bodies change.
It is now an established fact that astronauts lose bone mass and muscle strength in space, and their sense of balance changes due to the absence of gravity. There are also other problems. For reasons not entirely clear, their red blood cell count falls. Wounds take longer to heal and the immune system loses its strength. Even sleep is disturbed if gravity is weak or absent.
That is just what happens after a short visit to space. “What if you were to grow up without gravity ” Buckey asks. “What about the systems that depend on gravity like your muscles, or your balance system, or your heart and blood vessels ” There is good reason to believe the human body would develop differently.
Karen Masters has explored the immediate physical consequences of losing gravity. The first problem is that Earth is rotating at high speed. Earth’s atmosphere and its oceans, rivers and lakes would be one of the first things to drift away into space. A lack of gravity would eventually destroy our very planet, writes Masters. “Earth itself would most likely break apart into pieces and float off into space.”
A similar fate would happen to the Sun. Without the force of gravity to hold it together, the intense pressures at its core would cause it to burst open in an explosion. The same thing would happen to all the other stars in the Universe. However, because they are so far away, it would be years before the light from their death reached you.
12. What effects will the lack of gravity have on astronauts
A. Their sense of balance will lose. B. Their immune system won’t work.
C. Their wound will no longer heal. D. Their red blood cell count will decrease.
13. What will happen if gravity stops working according to Karen Masters
A. Human body on Earth will develop differently.
B. Earth will rotate at its highest speed.
C. Atmosphere and water on Earth will travel away into space.
D. Earth will break down into pieces and float off into space.
14. What may happen to the Sun after we lose gravity
A. It will hold the Universe together.
B. The pressure of its core may lead to its burst.
C. The light from its death will reach Earth quickly.
D. Its core will drift away into space.
15. Where can we most probably read the passage
A In a science magazine.
B. In a guidebook.
C. In a short story.
D. In an environment report.

I was still a thief when I met Anil. And though only 15, I was an experienced and fairly successful hand.
Anil was about 25—a tall, thin fellow—and he looked easy-going, kind and simple enough for my purpose. I might be able to get into his confidence.
I gave him my most appealing smile. “I want to work for you.” I said.
“But I can't pay you”
Perhaps I had misjudged the man. I asked, “Can you feed me ”
“Can you cook ”
“I can cook.” I lied.
“If you can cook, then I can feed you.”
The meal I cooked that night must have been terrible because Anil gave it to a stray dog and old me to be off. But I just hung around smiling in my most appealing way, and he couldn't help laughing.
Later he patted me on the head and said never mind, he'd teach me to cook. He also taught me to write my name and said he would soon teach me to write whole sentences and to add numbers. I was grateful. I knew that once I could write like an educated man there would be no limit to what I could achieve.
One evening he came home with a small bundle of notes, saying he had just sold a book to a publisher. At night, I saw him put the money under the mattress (床垫).
It's time I did some real work, I told myself. After all, he doesn't even pay me.
Anil was asleep. I crept up to the bed. Anil was sleeping peacefully. My hand slid under the mattress, searching for the notes. When I found them, I drew them out without a sound. Anil sighed in his sleep and turned on his side, towards me. I was frightened and quickly crawled out of the room.
I began to run, holding the notes by the string of my pajamas (睡衣). But I slowed down and sat down in the shelter of the clock tower. I should go back to Anil, I told myself, if only to learn to read and write.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150词左右;
I hurried back to the room feeling very nervous.

Bert had health issues in his later years that limited his mobility, and when he lost his eyesight three years ago, his attachment to his radio and Francesa became more pronounced. 故选A。
C
A. 4,400 steps a day. B. 150 minutes a day. C. 10,000 steps a day. D. 7,500 steps a day.
10. Which statement will the author believe
A. Walking 10000 steps a day fits us all who lack exercise.
D. Walk Often, Walk Fast And Walk Long
B 9. D 10. B 11. C
根据第三段“You’ve likely heard we need 10,000 steps a day. That’s about 5 miles. But contrary to popular belief, this recommendation doesn’t come from science. (你可能曾经听说过每天一万步的说法。但与人们这一普遍的观念相反,这个推荐的每天步行距离的概念却并非来源于真实的科学研究。)”可知,划线部分的指示代词指代的是前文提到的人们关于每天一万步运动的观念。故选B项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章倒数第二段“The study also noted that these benefits continued up to 7, 500 steps before leveling off. This 7,500 mark isn't surprising:It’s in line with common public health recommendations, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation of 150 minutes of moderate (适度的) physical activity a week for adults. (该项研究表明,这些益处直到运动强度递增至每天7500步都会持续存在。但更高强度的运动量则不会有变化,这个7500的指标并不奇怪:这与普遍的公共健康指导建议相符,比如疾病预防与控制中心给出的每周成年人150分钟的适度体力运动)”可知,疾病控制与预防中心给出的关于日均步行的运动建议为:每个成年人每周应进行至少150分钟的适量运动,每天走7500步符合该指导意见。故选D项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Research has shown that picking up the pace might be a good idea, too-fast enough to raise your heart rate, even if just for a short burst.(研究表明,加快步伐可能是一个好主意,速度快到足以提高你的心率,即使只是短暂的爆发)”可知,步行的好处取决于频率、强度和持续时间。故选B项。

A. In a science magazine.
B. In a guidebook.
C. In a short story.
D. In an environment report.

If you're anything like the typical human, then you have dreams and goals in your life. ____16____ We always focus on the end goal that we want to achieve and the deadline we want to do it by. The problem with this is that if we don’t magically hit the timeline that we set in the beginning, then we feel like a failure.
In my experience, instead of giving yourself a deadline to accomplish a particular goal by, you should choose a goal that is important to you and then set a schedule to work towards it consistently.
___17___ Back in August 2012, I decided that I wanted to do 100 push-ups in a row with strict form. When I tried it the first time, I only got 36. In the past, I might have set a deadline for myself: "Do 100 push-ups by December3lst.” _____18_____ I started doing push-up workouts every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. So far, the only workouts I’ ve missed were on long travel days. I have no total push-up goal for any single workout. The goal is to do the workout simply. _____19_____
In this case, I' ve made consistent progress towards my goal not by setting a deadline for my performance, but by sticking to a schedule.
So, want to be the type of person who accomplishes things on a consistent basis ____20____ This is a lesson I have learned from my own experience.
A. In this way, I believe I will set my goal.
B. Instead, I decided to set a schedule for my workouts
C. Give yourself a schedule to follow, not a deadline to race towards
D. I can’t predict when my body feels like setting a new personal record.
E. Allow me to explain this by using one real example from my own life.
F. The result is that after doing 77 push-up workouts I' ve made a lot of progress.
G. But when it comes to setting goals, there is one common mistake we often make.
G 17. E 18. B 19. F 20. C

空前“If you're anything like the typical human, then you have dreams and goals in your life.(如果你是一个平常人,那么你的生活中就有梦想和目标)”说到目标和梦想,空后“We always focus on the end goal that we want to achieve and the deadline we want to do it by.(我们总是关注我们想要实现的最终目标和我们想要实现它的最后期限。)”
第二段“In my experience…”提到笔者自己的经验,空后“Back in August 2012, I decided that I wanted to do 100 push-ups in a row with strict form. When I tried it the first time, I only got 36.( 早在2012年8月,我就决定以严格的形式连续做100个俯卧撑。当我第一次尝试的时候,我只做了36个)”开始举例,可知此空该选E项“允许我举一个自己真实的例子来说明”,符合题意,故选E。
【18题详解】
本题考查前后文对比。前句“In the past, I might have set a deadline for myself: "Do 100 push-ups by December3lst.”(在过去,我可能会为自己设定一个最后期限:“在12月3日之前做100个俯卧撑。”)”提到笔者以前直接计划最后期限,下文“I started doing push-up workouts every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. So far, the only workouts I’ve missed were on long travel days.( 我开始每周一、周三和周五做俯卧撑锻炼。到目前为止,我唯一错过的锻炼是在长途旅行日)”与上文是转折关系对比,可知空格处与上文是转折关系,B项“反而,我决定为我的锻炼安排一个时间表”说明现在笔者制定时间表去完成目标,故选B。
【19题详解】
本题位于段落结尾,顺承上文,笔者讲完自己的经历后应该做一总结,F项“结果是,在做了77次俯卧撑训练后,我取得了很多进展。” 对上文的经历总结。故选F。
【20题详解】
空后“This is a lesson I have learned from my own experience.( 这是我从自己的经验中学到的一个教训。)”

“such+名词+as...” 故填as。
根据空格前介词to和定冠词the可知,应作用名词measure作宾语,表示“措施”,再根据定语从句“that included returning farmland to wetland and the removal of some fish farms”可知,措施不止一项,应用其复数形式。

“But I can't pay you.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150词左右;
I hurried back to the room feeling very nervous.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I awoke late next morning to find that Anil had already made the tea.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I hurried back to the room feeling very nervous. It is much easier to steal something than to return it undetected. I opened the door quietly, then stood in the doorway, in clouded moonlight. Anil was still asleep. I crept to the head of the bed, my hand coming up with the notes. I felt his breath on my hand. I remained still for a minute. Then my hand found the edge of the mattress, and slipped under it with the notes.
I awoke late next morning to find that Anil had already made the tea. He stretched out his hand towards me with a note between his fingers. My heart sank. I thought I had been discovered. “I made some money yesterday,” he explained. “Now you’ll be paid regularly.” My spirits rose. “Today we’ll start writing sentences.” he said. He knew. But neither his lips nor his eyes showed anything. I smiled at Anil in my most appealing way.
