阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
It was a comfortable and sunny Sunday. I was going to meet an old university friend I
hadn’t seen for years, and was really excited.
My train was running a little late, but that was no big problem-I could text him to say I
would be delayed. He would understand. But ... where was my mobile phone I had that
familiar sinking feeling. Yes, I’d left it at home.
No mobile phone. I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling anxious, on edge and worried when I don’t have my
phone with me. In fact, I know I’m not alone: two-thirds of us experience ‘nomophobia’(无手机恐惧症), the
fear of being out of mobile phone contact.
That’s according to a study from 2012 which surveyed 1, 000 people in the UK about their relationship
with mobile phones.
It says we check our mobile phones 34 times a day, and that 18-to 24-year-olds, especially girls, are the
most likely to suffer fear of being without their mobiles: 77%of them say they are unable to be apart from their
phones for more than a few minutes.
Do you have nomophobia
·You never turn your phone off
·You frequently(频繁地)check for texts, missed calls and emails
·You always take your phone to the bathroom with you
·You never let the battery run out
It’s funny to think that around 20 years ago the only people with mobile phones would be businessmen
carrying their large, plastic “bricks”. Of course, these days, mobile phones are everywhere.
A UN study from this year said there would be more mobile phones than people across the world by the
end of 2020.
And when there are more phones than people in the world, maybe it’s time to ask who really is in charge(主
管) Are you in control of your phone, or does your phone control you
So, what happened with my university friend When I arrived a few minutes late he just laughed and said:
“You haven’t changed at all-still always late!” And we had a great afternoon catching up, full of jokes and stories,
with no desire(欲望) to check my phone.
Not having it with me felt strangely free. Maybe I’ll leave it at home on purpose next time.
21. What does the passage mainly talk about
A. The history of mobile phones.
B. The story of meeting an old university friend.
C. The attraction of playing mobile phones.
D. The terrible feeling of being without their mobiles.
22. The underlined phrase “on edge” in the third paragraph probably means ________.
A. energetic B. nervous C. brilliant D. amazed
23. According to the passage, who is most likely to be addicted(上瘾的) to mobiles
A. A successful manager.
B. A21-year-old girl.
C. A21-year-old boy.
D. A lonely middle-aged person.
B
I am crazy about horses. I remember that the first time I got on a horse, I fell in love with the animal. From
then on, I kept begging(恳求) my parents for a horse.
When I was four years old, I had selective mutism—a rare childhood disorder in which children stop
speaking in certain social situations. I spoke normally to my family, but was silent at school and in given social
situations. Kids like me have normal IQs but sometimes we just cannot speak. We do not do this purposely; it
feels impossible to speak.
My parents found a doctor to help me. He said that I was going to be given a chance to get whatever I
wanted. I couldn’t believe my good luck, but I could not answer. Finally, I was allowed to whisper(低声说) the
answer in my mother’s ear, “A horse.”
I was to get a little horse, but before that I had a list of tasks to finish. I had to answer the phone five times
a week. And I had to say one word to my teacher at school every day. For a child with selective mutism, saying
one word to someone can be like climbing Qomolangma.
Finally, I did everything and I got a perfect horse. His name is Sequoia and I love him.
As I see it, horses are silent too, but they are powerful and free at the same time. Horses give me the power
I need. They give me a reason to push myself. When things get difficult, I go to my horse, Sequoia. With him, I
find my voice.
I am an active member of society now. I feel I owe(应归功于) my life to Sequoia. I am so thankful that I
can look out my back door and see my beautiful horse looking back at me. He has given me the best gift I could
ever imagine—my life.
24. What do we know about kids with selective mutism
A. They cannot recover.
B. They usually have low IQs.
C. They don’t have the ability to speak.
D. They can’t speak in some situations.
25. What did the author need to do to get a horse
A. Try to talk.
B. Make a list of words.
C. Climb Qomolangma.
D. Take medicine on time.
26. What’s the purpose of Paragraph 6
A. To show that the author enjoys riding horses.
B. To show that the author only speaks to horses.
C. To show that the author feels connected with horses.
D. To show that the author learned horses understand humans.
C
Gardening is popular in many parts of the world. This outdoor activity gives us beautiful plants, pleasant
smelling flowers and fresh fruits and vegetables. But it also does a lot of good to our health.
Gardening connects people. When you are gardening, you are outdoors. So it is a perfect chance to meet
and spend time with your neighbors. Most people love to talk about their hobbies, and gardeners are no different.
They usually enjoy showing people what they are growing. And most enjoy sharing advice and stories about
their gardens almost as much as sharing flowers and vegetables from their gardens.
Gardening is a great activity for children. It gets them outdoors and off computers, televisions and
cellphones. Gardening is also a great teacher. It can teach a child about where food comes from and healthy
eating. It also helps them to understand that the natural resources(资源) are not inexhaustible and the importance
of using them carefully.
Then, when you garden, you must move around. All the different movements needed for gardening, like
bending and lifting, work small muscles(肌肉) in the body. And you can easily get good exercise when you are
digging holes or pulling grasses.
In a study, researchers looked at more than 2, 800 people over the age of 60. They studied their lifestyle
habits, activities and health over a 16-year-period. They found that gardening could lower the risk of future
dementia(痴呆) by 36%. Gardening requires people do many repeated actions, such as picking off dying flowers.
These actions have a calming influence on the brain. The brain is still active but not in the same way when we
use computers.
You’ll feel wonderful when what you grow in a garden looks, smells, feels and tastes good.
27. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2
A. Gardeners don’t feel lonely.
B. Gardeners are fond of sharing.
C. Gardeners have many hobbies.
D. Gardeners care about the environment.
28. What does the underlined word “inexhaustible” in Paragraph 3 mean
