It was my first full time job as a teacher in a high school in Riverside, California, The Department Chair told
me that I would teach a class Introduction to Writing, a freshman course. I felt very confident.
It was my first class. When I entered the classroom, I was surprised. Freshmen These kids looked too tall and
mature(成熟的) to be freshmen! I still didn’t have a class list of names, so I started by talking with them and asking
questions. They took notes and everything was fine until I noticed a tall boy eating a piece of cake. Rule 1, clearly
written on the board was “NO FOOD OR DRINK IN CLASS”. I got a little mad and asked him to read the rule out
高中英语 必修第一册 2 / 9
aloud. He did so and he got mad too!
I asked him, “Did you understand what you read?” This made him even madder.
“Yes, I did.”
“Well, then, what were you doing just now?”
We were both getting madder and madder.
“I was eating a piece of cake.” He took another bite(咬) and looked at me angrily.
“Well, get up, go outside and throw the cake away.”
And then both of us made a mistake. He said, “Here, I don’t even want it.” Then he handed it to me. He put
the piece of cake on my hand. The icing of the cake went between my fingers, making a real mess. He was very tall,
but he was sitting in a chair and I was standing next to him, mad and angry. I hit the cake on his hair!
The class started laughing and clapping. Somebody got up, went to the board and wrote “Teacher — 1; Mark
— 0”. I didn’t know whether I was supposed to laugh or not, but I couldn’t help it. And then, Mark got up and left.
The story was all over the school by the next period. Some students came to me and said, “I heard that terrible
things will happen if somebody tries to eat cake in your class!” Oh, how embarrassing!
Now I still teach, but I’m much better at dealing with students.

It’s school time again! You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer
is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared(害怕的) on the first day of school because of
all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and even a new school. Luckily, these “new”
worries only stay for a little while. Let’s find out more about going to a new school.
Most teachers kick off the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about
all the things you’ll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to
the rest of the class, too. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules and school
rules so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s not. Please pay close attention.
You might already know a lot of people in your class on the first day, but it’s a great day to make new friends,
so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don’t. Make the first move and you’ll be glad you did,
高中英语 必修第一册 3 / 9
and so will your new friends!
Seeing old friends can make the first day an exciting one. You can make the day special by wearing clothes that
you really like. Maybe you got a great T shirt on one of your vacations, or a pair of shoes. It also can make you
feel good to be prepared and have all the things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you’ll be needing.
But make sure that you pack(打包) them the night before in case you don’t have time in the morning.

27. According to the passage you usually do everything on the first day of school except “________”.
A. Introduce yourself B. Learn about the school rules
C. Make new friends D. Go over your new lessons
C
In the summer between my first year and second year in college, I was invited to be an
instructor at a high school camp. On the first day, when we were dancing and playing games,
I noticed a boy under the tree who was small and thin. His shyness made him appear weak.
I walked towards him, introduced myself and invited him to join in the activities and meet
some new people. He quietly replied, “No, I really don’t want to do this.” I could understand that he was in a new
world but I knew it wouldn’t be right to force him, either. Actually, the boy didn’t need a close talk but a friend.
At lunch the next day, I was leading camp songs when I saw the boy under the tree sitting alone. I tried again
with the same invitation, but he refused once again. That evening I was told the boy’s name was Tommy. Then I
asked the campers to pay special attention to the boy and spend time with him when they could.
The days went by and the time came when we had to leave. We held a big, warm party to celebrate the closing
of the camp. All the campers shared their wonderful moments. To my surprise, I found the boy from under the tree
dancing joyfully with two girls. I couldn’t believe it was the same person.
In October of my second year, I received a phone call from Tommy’s mother. She told me that Tommy was hit
by a car and killed. I offered my deep sadness. The mother said, “Tommy mentioned you so many times. I want
you to know that he went back to school and made new friends with confidence. You made a difference for Tommy
during his last months.”
高中英语 必修第一册 4 / 9

The human body is designed to move. But modern lifestyles and office jobs rarely give us the chance to move
around. As we know, we sit while we’re eating; we sit in the car and we sit while we’re watching TV. And many of
us sit for many hours at work.
New research shows that sitting less than three hours a day might extend your life by two years. Peter
Katzmarzyk, a scientist at the University of Louisiana in the southern United States, says that sitting is ubiquitous in
our lives, meaning it is something we do all the time, everywhere.
However, Mr. Katzmarzyk says even that does not mean you can sit for the rest of your waking hours. He also
says you may exercise often “We can’t throw away physical activity. It’s extremely important. We have 60 years of
research showing us that.”
Mr. Katzmarzyk and his colleagues are part of a new generation of researchers studying how sitting all day
affects length of life. “Studies that have assessed the relationship between sitting and mortality(死亡率) or television
viewing and mortality are very rare. There have only been a few of them, actually five or six now, in the last four or
five years.” They found that cutting television time to less than two hours a day could add one point four years to
life.
Luckily, change is already coming to some offices, especially in the design of desks. A “standing desk” lets
people stand while they are working. Another new design is called the “treadmill desk.” A treadmill is an exercise
machine that lets you walk in one place. Even some U.S. schools are beginning to experiment with desks that are
part bicycle to keep children moving. That’s one of the strategies that many companies are using now.
Mr. Katzmarzyk also says studying this problem has inspired his team to make a few changes in their own lives.

Friendship is a very important human relationship and everyone needs good friends. But there are times in our
lives such as when we have recently moved into a new town, or changed our schools or jobs. Such changes often
leave us without a friend. 36 But for many of us, the process is difficult and requires courage. Below are some
helpful suggestions on how to make and keep friends.
Associate with others.
The first step to make friends is associating with people. You can go to public places to meet new people.
Besides, you will need to make yourself known by becoming an active member of such places.
Start a conversation.
Starting a conversation is the second most important step in making new friends. 37 You can always start
the conversation. Being able to make small talk is a very useful skill in relating(关联的) with other people.
38
Choosing friends with common interests is important in building friendship as these interests always bring you
and your friend together. Hanging out will always be a pleasant experience.
Let it grow.
It is a good thing to stay in touch. However, try not to press your new friend with calls, messages or visits as
this would likely wear him or her out and finally you may lose your friend. 39 The best friendships are the
ones that grow naturally.
Enjoy your friendship.
The best way to enjoy your friendship is to allow your friends to be themselves. 40 Try not to change
them from who they are to what you want them to be. Become the kind of friend you will want your friend to be.
A. Be cheerful.
B. Do things together.
C. Don’t wait to be spoken to.

One day, my brother and I were alone in our apartment. The reason was that my parents had both gone for a
ball party and had left me in charge of everything. I was doing my homework while my younger brother was watching
TV. All of a sudden, the doorbell rang. Ding Dong! Ding Dong! My younger brother had rushed to the door

before I decided to answer the door. We both thought that our parents had come home. As a result, he unlocked the
door and opened it.
Outside of the house stood a man who wore a black raincoat and black rubber boots. He looked no different
from other people and he said that he was a salesman and asked politely if our mother or father was at home so he
could talk with them.
Without any thinking, my brother said, “No.” He asked if we would like to buy some comic books, which he
was selling. I quickly explained to him that we were not supposed to buy anything without our parents’ permission.
However, it seemed that he was not willing to follow my advice and he had an intention to enter our house.
Then, I realized something terrible would happen. As I was about to close the door, he forced his way into our
house. He took out a knife and forced me to tie up my brother’s hands with some rope which he took out from his
pocket. I tied up my brother’s hands but I tied it in a special way so he could untie himself as we often did. The man
then tied my hands up and locked both of us in the kitchen.
Soon, he went upstairs to search the bedroom for something valuable. I managed to teach my brother to untie
the rope on his hands. He then untied me. I rushed to the telephone to call the police, but line was dead.
