My legs were shaking, my heart pounding. As we neared the edge of the cliff, I double-checked all my equipment to make sure it was secure. I felt anxious, but not eager for my turn as I waited in line with the members of my group. Fear rose from the pit of my stomach as I realized there was no one else in front of me Slowly, I lowered myself to the edge of the nearly 200-foot cliff. My skin shook like a dozen earthquakes when
I reached the belay man, the person who hooked me to the belaying ropes, which keep me from falling. He hooked me up, and I slowly lowered myself over the edge of the cliff, breathed deeply, and went into a sitting position with both feet in front of me. I closed my eyes, gulped(大口吸气), and began to go down.
Panic took over as I reached a point where my feet could no longer touch the rocky wall. The wall was right there, fooling me. My foot made contact with the wall, causing me to rotate. As I slowly began to spin around an interesting thing happened; my panic vanished. The beautiful view of the surrounding area overwhelmed(淹没;压倒)me. All the different-sized trees were evergreens, which seemed to blanket the hill-side. The forest was filled with life as different types of animals raced across my field of vision. As I looked up-ward the sky seemed to open up into a blue vastness. A sense of excitement overtook me. I’d been waiting for this moment, night and day, for one long month, and finally my dream had become a reality. I began to feel calmer and more relaxed.
As I finally neared the bottom of the cliff, there seemed to be less animal activity. Looking up, the cliff did not seem as frightening as it did going down. My feet were shaky when they finally touched the soft and muddy ground. Pride swelled up within me. Traveling on the muddy road, I began the long climb upward.
24. How did the author feel when he was about to go down the cliff

A. To place him over the edge. B. To ensure his safety.

27. What was the author going to do after going down the cliff

It was once a shoreline buried by enough garbage to make it invisible (看不见的), thus, given the unfortunate nickname “toilet bowl” . Now the Philippines’ Manila Bay beach is totally different, compared with a few months ago. It happened so suddenly and extremely that it brought tears to the eyes of the local people.
The cleanup started on 27 January, when 5, 000 volunteers descended on Manila Bay to remove over 45 tons of garbage, marking the beginning of a nation-wide environmental campaign. But some two months before this great movement began, a quiet revolution was already underway.
During the first week of December 2018, Brooklyn-based Bounties Network collected three tons of garbage from Manila Bay over two days through a project that paid a small group of people, mostly fishermen, with a digital currency (数字货币) based on the Ethereum system.
For the mostly non-bank-using Filipino fishermen, this was a first-ever experience with a digital currency. It’s one that proves decisive in enabling poor communities around the world to take up arms in the fight against humanity’s waste.
There are signs that this recycling-for-digital payment industry may be just about to take off. Earlier in September 2018, Plastic Bank, a Vancouver-based company powered by IBM technology, also started a similar project. They set up a project in Naga, a town in southern Luzon, the country’s largest island, building a collection point to let people exchange plastic and recyclable materials for digital payouts through a system.
That both these pioneers have chosen the Philippines as their first location is not surprising considering the country’s contribution to ocean waste. A Wall Street Journal study in 2015 revealed that the Philippines make the third-largest amount of plastic waste into global oceans.

As it is reported in today’s 21st Century, a pedestrian was walked down a street when someone dropped litter from a building nearby. Knocked unconscious, the person was sent to a nearest hospital immediately.
Admittedly, we have the right do whatever we want. Besides, violating others’ rights is unacceptable. Dropping litter from a high place is impolite and dangerous, that presents a potential threat to many people. If this behavior continue, everyone is likely to suffer from it.
I think the person throwing litter randomly deserves a severe punish. All of us should devote ourselves to improve our own behavior. Most importantly, laws should be introduced by the authorities. And I sincerely hope such cases won’t happen some more.

书面表达(参考)
Dear Mrs. Jones,
I am writing to express my thanks for the three happy months I spent with you and your family. But for your considerate care, I wouldn’t have enjoyed my stay in America.
Initially, so friendly are you and your family that I am always feeling at home, thus overcoming the homesickness and fright on my arrival. Moreover, I have to sing high praise for the Chinese dishes you made, which was just like the taste in my hometown. Busy as you are, you still try your best to take me out for parties, picnics and of course, I really enjoy the time we spent together.
Gone are the golden days and I’ll cherish the unforgettable experience forever. Thanks again and Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
