Celebrating the holidays can mean different things to different people. Some choose to leave for a trip, while others choose to stay at home with family. Whichever type of person you are, here are some advantages and disadvantages to both decisions.
Staying at Home for the Holidays
Staying at home for the holidays usually means spending time with your family or close friends. You get to do holiday traditions with your family. When you choose to stay at home for the holidays, you can also have more time to catch up on sleep and relaxation. What's more, choosing to stay at home might be cheaper in the long-run, causing you to be somewhat more stress-free. You can also get to those things you have been meaning to get to and make appointments to get your hair, nails, or whatever else you would like done. Some disadvantages may be that you have to deal with some family members that you may not get along well with, or the boredom when you have nothing else to do. You may also not get the luxury of having your bed made for you, like if you were staying at a hotel out of town.
Travelling for the Holidays
Travelling for the holidays can be an amazing experience wherever you go. Theme parks like Disney World enable people, especially children, to see cartoon characters and fantastic castles. Big cities such as Shanghai usually offer lots of sightseeing, various types of cuisine and exciting activities. People also like travelling to places where there is stuff they can't really do at home. For example, people who live in the southern part of China may travel to colder places during Spring Festival, like Harbin, because there is snow and they can enjoy activities such as skiing and snowboarding. One disadvantage is that travelling during holidays can be a little more expensive than usual. You might also run into a little stress, depending on how smoothly your flight goes and whether your travelling arrangement is satisfying.
Overall, no matter how you choose to spend your holidays, make sure it is filled with the people that are closest to you and with lots of love.

Today an electric light is the most commonly used device in our daily lives. We need them to provide light for houses, buildings, and streets. We also have handheld lights that have a backup (后备) time of more than 12 hours. The technology that we use today may be different from the past, but what we have today can be traced all the way back to the invention of the electric light.
Efforts to create a working electric light go back to 1800 when an Italian scientist named Alessandro Volta, during his experiments on the development of electric batteries, observed that when a copper (铜) wire connected the two ends of the battery, it starts to glow due to the passage of electricity. The electric battery he invented then became the source of many electric experiments.
Researches and developments on the electric light were continued by many inventors. It is said that the electric light was invented by 20 inventors before Thomas Edison.
The main problem in the developments of the electric light was the filament (灯丝) inside it; it didn't last very long and melted very quickly. In this regard, Thomas Edison was very important in the development of the electric light.
Edison started developing and testing new filaments that could last longer. He tested many materials and finally developed a filament that could last for 13.5 hours, which proved that he was moving in the right direction. He tried more than 3,000 electric light designs and 6,000 different filament materials. Finally, he found a filament that could last for more than 1,200 hours.
Edison became successful not just because he developed a long-lasting filament. He also developed the entire electric lighting system, including the sockets (插孔) and switches. He also made the first steam-generating power station in 1882.
4. Who created the first electric battery
A. Alessandro Volta. B. Some historians.
C.Thomas Edison. D. Twenty inventors.
5. What was the biggest difficulty in the development of the electric light
A. The electric light melted in a short time.
B. The filaments could not last for a long time.
C. There were only a few materials to make filaments.
D. The designs for the electric light were not good enough.
6. Which of the following is NOT Thomas Edison's contribution
A. He found a long-lasting filament.
B. He created an electric lighting system.
C. He developed 3,000 light bulb designs.
D. He developed the first power generating station.
7. What do you think could be the best title of this passage
A. How Electric Lights Work
B. The Life of Thomas Edison
C. The Advanced Technology of Electricity
D. The Development of the Electric Light

When I was a child, I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and escape to the city. We lived on a farm and, in the winter especially, we were quite cut off from the outside world. As soon as I left school, I packed my bags and moved to the capital. However, I soon discovered that city life has its problems too.
One big disadvantage is money---it costs so much to go out, not to mention basics like food and housing. Another disadvantage is pollution. I suffer from asthma(哮喘), and at times the air is so bad that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of traveling round. Although I have a car, I seldom use it because of the traffic jams. One choice is to go by bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous.
Of course there are advantages. First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever your tastes in culture or entertainment. Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety of goods is very surprising --- and , what is more, shops are often only a short walk away.
Is life better then, in the city Perhaps it is , when you are in your teens or twenties. However, as you get older, and especially if you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem preferable. I certainly hope to move back there soon.
8. What was the writer always thinking about when he was a child
A. Staying on the farm. B. Leaving home for the city.
C. Moving to the countryside. D. Running away from the school.
9. Which of the following is true about the writer
A. He lives in the city now. B. He is in good health.
C. He prefers driving a car. D. He is very old now.
10. In the passage, the writer tries to __________
A. persuade the reader to live in the city
B.express his opinions about ways of life
C. show an interest in the outside world
D. describe his life in the countryside
11. How is the passage mainly developed
A. By inferring. B. By giving explanations.
C.By listing examples. D. By comparing.

In her outstanding book, “Choose the Happiness Habit”, Pam Golden wrote, “Take the story of two twin brothers for example. One grew up and became an alcoholic (酒鬼), while the other became a successful businessman. When asked why he became an alcoholic, the alcoholic replied, “Because my father was a drunk.” However, the successful businessman’s answer was also “Because my father was a drunk.” when asked why he succeeded. The same background. The same upbringing. However, the results were quite different. Why The reason is that they had different choices. The brothers chose different thoughts which formed the situations they found themselves in at last, so they had different experiences.
There was a time in my life when I thought difficulty was due to “bad luck”. Have you ever heard the saying “When it rains, it pours” That was my answer when others asked me how things were going on when I was in trouble. So what do you think I got “RAIN”. More and more “RAIN”. I couldn’t understand why bad luck was always with me.
Pam Golden says, “You’re either living in the problem or you’re living in the solution.” Now, when I’m faced with what I used to think was a negative situation, I use a different way to think about it. I force myself to replace those negative thoughts that make me lose heart in my mind with positive thoughts which encourage me to fight against the difficulty bravely. Sometimes I write down some ideas that may be a solution, which I combine with the lessons I have learned from the bad situations and the difficulties that troubled me in the past, and often, I find a solution to the problem soon. It seems that I should thank the difficulty I met with. The RAIN that poured in my world has become great experiences that provide me with valuable experience, from which I can benefit.
Now, it doesn’t “rain” as much in my life as it used to. In fact, most days are beautiful, cloudless and sunny! Sometimes I do get a rain, but I think it makes me stronger just like the rain helps plants grow up.
12. The example of the twin brothers shows that ________.
A. upbringing makes a big difference B. education decides a person’s future
C. making good choices is the most important D. it is luck that leads to success
13. What does “RAIN” mentioned in the second paragraph refer to
A. Success. B. Good luck. C. Water. D. Difficulty.
14. What is talked about in the third paragraph
A. How the author deals with difficulty now.
B. How the author lives in the problem.
C. How the author gets help from others.
D. How the author collects useful experience.
15. Now, the author’s attitude towards “RAIN” is ________.
A. negative B. positive C. unclear D. unknown

This Christmas I was debating what to give my father. My dad is a hard person to buy a gift for because he never wants anything. I pulled out my phone to read a text message from my mum saying that we were going Christmas shopping for him. (17) ________ The message was from my father. My eyes then fell on a photo of a flower taken in Wyoming, and underneath a poem by William Blake. The flower, a lone dandelion standing against the bright blue sky, inspired me. I called back. I told my mum to go without me and that I had already made a gift. I sent the photo of the cream-coloured flower to my computer and typed the poem on top of it. As I was arranging the details, another poem came to mind. The poem was written by Edgar Allan Poe. (19) _________ I typed that out as well and searched online for an appropriate background image for the words. The poem was about dreaming, and after searching I found the perfect picture. The image was a painting with blues and greens and purples, twisting together to create the theme and wonder of a dream. I watched both passing through the printer, the white paper covered with words that shaped my childhood. (20) ___________
Christmas soon arrived. The minute I saw the look on my dad's face as he unwrapped those black letters carefully placed within a cheap frame, I knew I had given the perfect gift.
A. Then I came across a message on my phone that I had not read yet.

作文
Dear Alisa,
It is so nice to hear from you.
To be honest, I totally understand how you feel because I used to be troubled by the same problem. I know you are a kind and considerate girl, and it is reasonable that you wanted to feel welcomed by your new schoolmates. However, saying yes doesn't always bring you real friends. Real friends will accept your refusal because they value your close friendship. Moreover, some people may take your kindness for granted and come to you for help even if they can do it on their own. This is not good for them either, because everyone needs to be responsible for their own business.
Although refusing may hurt people's feelings or cause embarrassment in the short term, you need to take that first step and say "no". Try to refuse politely and explain why you can't do it. You can also suggest a Plan B or provide some advice. In this way, I believe people will understand you better.
So be brave and good luck. Let me know how it goes.
