Although he will always be remembered for portraying(饰演) “Superman, ”the greatest role of actor Christopher Reeve’s life was as a champion of sufferers of spinal cord(脊椎)injuries and an advocate of stem cell(干细胞)research.
Unlike the man of steel, he wasn’t faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than an engine and he couldn’t leap tall buildings in a single bound. But the courage and determination Reeve displayed in trying to overcome his paralysis(瘫痪)from a 1995 horse-riding accident went beyond any of the achievements of the comic book hero.
“He became a real-life Superman. His heroism, his courage was extraordinary, ”Colin Blakemore, the chief executive of Britain’s Medical Research Council said. “Like many people who suffer some terrible injuries, Christopher Reeve was totally changed by that experience and brought the kind of energy and enthusiasm that made him successful as a film star to an entirely different issue, with huge effect. ”
Reeve, 52, died of heart failure on October 10, 2004 after having treatment for an infected pressure wound without realizing his dream of walking again. But in the nine years since his accident, he made personal progress to regain respect and admiration, established the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation, a non-profit research organization, and used his fame to raise millions of dollars for research into spinal cord injuries.
He also provided hope and inspiration to other patients and made speeches to support scientists to be allowed to conduct stem cell research in the hopes of eventually curing paralysis and other illnesses such as diabetes and Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
“He has been our champion. If you think of spinal cord injuries, you automatically recall a picture of Christopher Reeve, ”said Paul Smith, executive director of the Spinal Injuries Association in England. It is because of Reeve that spinal cord injuries and stem cell research are so widely discussed, according to Smith. The fact that it happened to Reeve showed it can affect anyone, even Superman.
Reeve did not live long enough to see whether stem cell research could help restore movement to the paralyzed. The research is still in its early days and no one knows what advances it may bring.

B. the image of Superman created by Reeve will always be remembered
C. Reeve is no more than an ordinary person when he was faced with paralysis
D. the inspiring image in Reeve’s real life was even greater than that in his film
7. Reeve made the following contributions to the scientific research EXCEPT .
A. setting up a non-profit research organization
B. winning public respect and admiration by overcoming obstacles
C. influencing the world by making speeches on stem cell research
D. struggling for the permission to conduct stem cell research
8. It can be implied from the passage that .
A. Reeve remained optimistic after suffering from paralysis
B. stem cell research has long been a controversial subject
C. paralysis can happen to anyone no matter how strong he seems
D. some presently incurable illnesses are to be cured in the near future

This assertion(断言) belongs to Albert Einstein that in life imagination is more important than knowledge. Another important thing that goes together with imagination and knowledge is intelligence. This contributes to our behavior in society,to our integration(整合) in different groups of people and helps us manage in extreme situations of our life.
First of all, imagination can be noticed mostly at intelligent persons. However, everybody has a certain degree of imagination,be it higher or slower. Consequently, each one of us uses his imagination in the everyday life and contributes at making different inventions, some of them being very useful to the mankind. Here we can mention the inventions that men of science and not only have invented for the benefit of the developing of society: the bulb, the radio, the telephone, the steam, the internet and so on.
On the contrary, knowledge is important but only if people know how to apply it in different fields of activity. However, one has to be intelligent enough and have imagination in order to achieve his goals in life.
According to all these,I believe that imagination undergoes knowledge, the latter needing learning and time in order to be achieved, whereas the former appears as the result of one's degree of intelligence.
We can take the rapid development of the Japanese society as an example of both imagination and knowledge. People there are very intelligent and have known to take advantage of their knowledge to modernize their society. Therefore, they've organized their market economy using the experiences of the west countries. The military navy and the parliamentary regime(议会政体) took over the English system and the American one in the field of education. Hence, all of these factors were put into functioning and they also take the Japanese specific culture and traditions into consideration.
If we were to conclude asking if Albert Einstein was right or no,we can only say that it all depends on whom we ask, what we ask about and when. But there is one thing that I am sure about, that is imagination is more important than knowledge.
9.Which of the following can be the best title of the passage
A.Everybody Has the Same Degree of Imagination
B.The Rapid Development of the Japanese Society
C.Imagination Is More Important Than Knowledge
D.Tips on How to Learn From Other Countries
10.We know from the passage that intelligence ________.
A.is the major source of imagination and knowledge
B.plays the most important role in one's achievement
C.has nothing to do with imagination and knowledge
D.can help us deal with extreme situations of our life
11.By giving the example of the rapid development of the Japanese society, the author ________.
A.explains the relationship between imagination and knowledge
B.wants to tell us the importance of both imagination and knowledge
C.intends to give some advice on how to modernize the society
D.expresses his own opinion on how to borrow ideas from others
D
Scientists have discovered a gene (基因)that plays a role in violence (暴力)in men ill-treated in childhood . The discovery could explain why some experience unhappy childhoods and go on to normal lives, while others turn to violence, crime of antisocial deeds. But it will also restart another argument.
Terrie Moffitt and Avshalom Caspi report in Science today that one common form of a gene in the brain makes men more likely to be violent—but only if they have experienced cruelty or rejection in childhood . The researchers followed up the life histories of 442boys born in New Zealand in 1972. Of these, 154 had been ill-treated in the first 10 years, 33 of them badly. They had either experienced sexual attack, beatings or rejection by mother or stepparents. Of the 154 children , 55had a less active variant (变异体)of a gene called MAOA, and 99had the more active variant . The 55 boys were more than twice as likely to have been in trouble as the other ill-treated group. They made up 12% of the total, but were responsible for 44%of all crimes from among the 442 boys.
Prof Moffitt thought a “violence” gene had not been discovered. Boys with the less active form who were not ill-treated during childhood lived normal lives. “It is very common in the population. One third of us have it.” She said, “So the gene doesn’t do much of anything , it doesn’t cause any trouble in any way , unless we are also ill-treated”.
The gene might also show the ability to bear mental stress. The army or the police might examine the applicants (申请人)to see if they have the more active form . But the discovery also raises the argument that people with the less active form of the gene could be social dangers, to be treated with medicine. “This research can easily lead people to fix social problems through medical treatment,” said David King of the UK Gene Alert Group.
12. According to the passage, the less active variant of the gene .
A. will totally determine men’s character and behaviour
B. always leads to trouble-making
C. might be responsible for boys’ bad deeds
D. plays no role in children’s development
13. We can learn from the passage that those men who have stronger ability to bear mental stress usually .
A. have the more active variant of gene
B. have the less active variant of the gene
C. had ill-treated childhood
D. had no ill-treated childhood
14. According to the passage , we can infer that .
A. one fifth of the population carry the less active variant.
B. boys with the less active variant will not live normal lives
C. all the people agree with the idea of “violence” gene
D. the less active variant and ill-treated experience contribute to violence
15. David King’s words in the last paragraph implies that .
A. he agrees with the research findings of the gene MAOA
B. he doesn’t believe the possible role of the less active variant
C. he considers that the research is of no great importance
D. he thinks the findings to solve the social problems too simple
