When I was growing up in America, I was ashamed of my mother's Chinese English. Because of her English, she was often treated unfairly. People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.
My mother has long realized the limitations of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on the phone to pretend I was she. I was forced to ask for information or even to shout at people who had been rude to her. One time I had to call her stockbroker I said in an adolescent voice that was not very convincing (令人相信的),“This is Mrs. Tan. "
And my mother was standing beside me, whispering loudly, “Why he don't send me check already two week late. "
And then, in perfect English I said: "I'm getting rather concerned. You agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasn't arrived. "
Then she talked more loudly. "What he want I come to New York tell him front of his boss. "And so I turned to the stockbroker again, "I can't tolerate (容忍) any more excuse. If I don't receive the check immediately, I am going to have to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week. "
The next week we ended up in New York. While I was sitting there red-faced, my mother, the real, was shouting to his boss in her broken English.
When I was a teenager, my mother’ s broken English embarrassed me. But now, I see it differently. To me, my mother’s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is vivid, direct, and full of observation and wisdom. It was the language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed ideas, and made sense of the world.

Parents and kids today dress alike, listen to the same music, and are friends. Is this a good thing Sometimes, when Mr. Ballmer and his 16-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and talk about interests both enjoy, such as pop culture, he remembers his more distant relationship with his parents when he was a teenager.
“I would never have said to my mom, ‘Hey, the new Weezer album is really great. How do you like it ’” says Ballmer. “There was just a complete gap in taste.”
Music was not the only gulf. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits.
Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families. Conversations on subjects such as sex and drugs would not have taken place a generation ago. Now they are comfortable and common. And parent-child activities, from shopping to sports, involve a feeling of trust and friendship that can continue into adulthood.
No wonder greeting cards today carry the message, “To my mother, my best friend.”
But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect for parents. “There’s still a lot of strictness and authority on the part of parents out there, but there is a change happening,” says Kerrie, a psychology professor at Lebanon Valley College. “In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents.”
Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these evolving roles and attitudes. They see the 1960s as a turning point. Great cultural changes led to more open communication and a more democratic process that encourages everyone to have a say.
“My parents were on the ‘before’ side of that change, but today’s parents, the 40-year-olds, were on the ‘after’ side,” explains Mr. Ballmer. “It’s not something easily accomplished by parents these days, because life is more difficult to understand or deal with, but sharing interests does make it more fun to be a parent now.”

Directions: Choose from the sentences A—F to complete the passage. There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use.
____47____ They are church weddings with a great deal of music, weddings on mountaintops with guests who are without shoes and so on. But many weddings, no matter where or how they are performed include certain traditional customs.
Before a couple is married, they become engaged. The wedding ceremony enters the church while the wedding march is played. The bride carrying a bouquet enters last with her father who will give her away. The groom enters the church from a side door. When the wedding party is gathered by the altar the bride and groom exchange vows. It is traditional to use the words:
“To have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part.” ____49____ Wearing the wedding ring on the fourth finger of the left hand is an old custom.
After the ceremony there is often a party, called a “reception” which gives the wedding guests an opportunity to congratulate the newlyweds.

分析后文内容“They are church weddings with a great deal of music, weddings on mountaintops with guests who are without shoes and so on. (有音乐伴奏的教堂婚礼,有不穿鞋的客人在山顶上举行的婚礼等等。)”可知,后文主要列举了美国各种不同的婚礼形式,因此可推知设空句作为总说句提及美国有很多形式的婚礼。选项C“There are so many kinds of weddings in the United States.(在美国有很多种婚礼。)”
前文“Before a couple is married, they become engaged. And then invitations are sent to those who live near by, their close friends and their relatives who live faraway.(一对情侣在结婚前要先订婚。然后邀请被发送到那些住在附近的人,他们的亲密的朋友和他们的住在远处的亲戚。)”提及了举办婚礼前的一系列准备,空后内容“The wedding itself usually lasts between 20 and 40 minutes.(婚礼本身通常持续20到40分钟。)” F“When everything is ready, then comes the most exciting moment.(当一切准备就绪,就到了最激动人心的时刻。)”中“everything”对应前文,“the most exciting moment”对应后文,符合语境分析。故选F项。
根据前文“To have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part.(从今以后,无论环境是好是坏,是富贵是贫贱,是健康是疾病,彼此相爱,彼此珍惜,直到死亡将我们分开。)”提及的是婚礼誓言内容,后文“Wearing the wedding ring on the fourth finger of the left hand is an old custom.(把结婚戒指戴在左手无名指上是一个古老的习俗。)” B“Following the promises, the couple exchange rings.(誓言之后,两人交换戒指。)”
根据后文“When the couple drives away from the church, friends often chase them in cars honking and drawing attention to them.(新婚夫妇开车离开教堂时,朋友们常常开车追赶他们,按喇叭引他们注意。)” D“The bride and groom run to the car under a shower of rice thrown by the wedding guests.(新娘新郎从婚礼宾客撒下的雨点般的米下跑向汽车。)”

I. Translation (15分)
Directions: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.
(be sure to...)(汉译英)
We will go hiking tomorrow. Be sure to watch the weather forecast tonight.
go hiking去远足;be sure to务必;weather forecast天气预报。 We will go hiking tomorrow. Be sure to watch the weather forecast tonight.
Students should apply their personal goals in life to action.
短语为apply sth. to sth.,should后跟动词原形;表示“个人的人生目标”短语为personal goals in life;表示“行动”应用名词action,作宾语。 Students should apply their personal goals in life to action.
(rob ... of)(汉译英)
The noise from the street robbed Hudson of his sleep.
此处表示“街上的噪音”应用the noise from the street,作主语;表示“夺去某人……” The noise from the street robbed Hudson of his sleep.
(feel / be on top of the world)(汉译英)
When they watched the national flag rising at the award ceremony of the Olympics, Chinese present felt on top of the world.
When they watched the national flag rising at the award ceremony of the Olympics。 顶端为on the top of,因此后半句翻译为Chinese present felt on top of the world。 When they watched the national flag rising at the award ceremony of the Olympics, Chinese present felt on top of the world.
II. Summary Writing (15分)
55. Directions: Read the following passage and write a summary in no more than 100 words. The original sentences in the passage are not allowed to use.
A third kind of thinking is stimulated when anyone questions our beliefs and opinions. We sometimes find ourselves changing our minds without any resistance or heavy emotion, but if we are told that we are wrong we resent the imputation(归咎) and harden our hearts. We are incredibly careless in the formation of our beliefs, but find ourselves filled with an illicit (不正当的) passion for them when anyone proposes to rob us of their companionship. It is obviously not the idea themselves that are dear to us, but our self-esteem, which is threatened. We may surrender, but rarely confess ourselves vanquished (消失). In the intellectual world at least, peace is without victory.
Few of us take the pains to study the origin of our cherished convictions (信仰) ; indeed, we have a natural repugnance (反感) to so doing. We like to continue to believe what we have been accustomed to accept as true, and the resentment aroused when doubt is cast upon any of our assumptions leads us seek every manner of excuse for clinging to them. The result is that most of our so-called reasoning consists in finding arguments for going on believing as we already do.
