Japanese officials say they are pleased with the quality of the asteroid (小行星)material collected by a spacecraft and returned to Earth.
Last week, officials from Japan described the samples(样品),which were collected from the Ryugu asteroid in July 2019.Ryugu sits more than 300 million kilometers from Earth.Japan's unpiloted Hayabusa2 spacecraft removed the material after making a hole into the asteroid.
The space agency said the July 2019 task aimed to collect samples from below the surface of Ryugu.During an earlier operation in February 2019,Hayabusa2 collected material from a different part of the asteroid. The second collection effort resulted in sample pieces as big as I centimeter. The black material looked similar to charcoal and was very hard.It did not break apart when picked up or poured into another container.
Earlier this month, space officials described the samples Hayabusa2 removed on its first mission as smaller, sandy pieces. They were collected from the surface of Ryugu.Hayabusa2 was launched in December 2014 and arrived near Ryugu in June 2018.The Japanese space mission aims to use the samples to learn more about how our solar system formed.
To get the second set of samples in July,Hayabusa2 used an impactor to knock the asteroid's surface. The aim was to collect material unaffected by space radiation or other environmental conditions. The size differences suggest different hardness of the bedrock of the asteroid. One possibility is that the place of the second touchdown was a hard bedrock and larger particles broke and entered the container.
Hayabusa2 is now on another mission to a smaller asteroid, called 1998 KY26.The Japanese government expects the aircraft to take 11 years to reach that asteroid.Hayabusa2's new task aims to study possible ways to prevent large stones from hitting Earth.
8. What does the underlined word "unpiloted" in Para.2 mean? ______
A. Out of date. B. Highly advanced.
C. Without drivers. D. Extremly pricy.
9. What are these asteroid materials used to do? ______
A. Study how the solar system was born.
B. Determine the movement of asteroids.
C. Study the environment on the asteroid.
D. Uncover when the asteroid was formed.
10. What is the Japanese spacecraft's next mission? ______
A. To discover new planets.
B. To fetch more materials in space.
C. To travel around the solar system.
D. To explore ways to protect the earth.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? ______
A. Japan Makes Progress in Studying Solar System
B. Japan Is Pleased with Latest Asteroid Samples
C. The Secret of an Asteroid Comes to Light
D. The Earth Faces Threats from Space

Today we know Antarctica as an extreme environment containing ice and snow. But new research provides evidence that the area had a rainforest in the past.
The researchers collected a piece of Earth sediment(沉淀物)from under the seafloor off the coast of Antarctica. In the sediment they discovered forest material that was estimated to be about 90 million years old. This would have been in the Cretaceous Period, when dinosaurs were the main land animals. The sediment was removed by scientists on the research icebreaker RV Polarstern in the Amundsen Sea near Pine Island Glacier.
Johann Klages is a geologist with the Alfred Wegener Institute,Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research in Germany. He was the lead writer of a study on the findings, published in the journal Nature. He said the sediment was collected from a depth of about 30 meters below the ocean floor.Klages said an examination showed that the material didn't form in the ocean.
The researchers estimate that the area-about 900 kilometers from the South Pole-had average yearly temperatures of about 12 to 13 degrees Celsius.During the warmest summer months, average temperatures likely reached between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius. The soil included fine dirt particles(颗粒)and hard clay,as well as substances linked to at least 65 different kinds of plants, the study found.Klages added that the plants included trees, ferns and flowering plants. While no animal remains were found,Klages said there were likely dinosaurs, flying reptiles(爬行动物) and many insects in the environment.
The research represents new evidence of the major climate changes Earth has experienced in the past-and is currently undergoing today. The soil in the sediment dates back to the planet's warmest period of the past 140 million years, with sea level about 170 meters higher than today.
The researchers said that the rainforest environment in Antarctica was especially surprising because each year, the area experiences a four-month polar night when there is no sunlight to fuel plant life.Klages said no ice sheets were present during the time, but seasonal snowfall was likely.
12. How did the researchers come to their findings in Para.3? ______
A. By collecting data on climate.
B. By researching special plants.
C. By exploring ice in Antarctica.
D. By analyzing the Earth sediment.
13. What did the researchers say about the sediment? ______
A. Its material developed in the ocean.
B. Its material formed on the land.
C. It dates back to cold times in Antarctica.
D. It contained different animal remains.
14. What does the author indicate in the last paragraph? ______
A. There were ice sheets 140 million years ago.
B. Seasonal snowfall made the forest disappear.
C. Antarctica's natural environment has changed greatly.
D. Polar nights in Antarctica are getting shorter than before.
15. What is the main idea of the text? ______
A. Antarctica is getting warmer like before.
B. Various wildlife once existed in Antarctica.
C. Antarctica had a different history of climate.
D. Researchers study the secrets of Antarctica.
