When the COVID-19 hit and supermarket shelves were empty, Chris Hall and Stefanny Lowey decided they no longer wanted to depend on others for food. They, who live on Pender Island(片打岛) in British Columbia(不列颠哥伦比亚), Canada, decided to start a year-long challenge where they wouldn't buy a single thing to eat. Instead they would grow, raise or catch everything—right down to sugar, salt and flour(面粉). Now, five months in, they say the challenge has changed their lives.
Chris, 38, said, “It has always been something that we have wanted to do. We have had a garden and grown vegetables for a long time already. When the COVID-19 hit, it gave us that extra push that we needed to do it. We were both out of work when we started, and with the reality check of grocery stores running out of items, it gave us even more energy to see if we could look after ourselves.”
The pair spent the months before building a house for chickens, ducks and turkey as well as studying as much as possible to figure out where they would get all the things they needed. Chris adds, “We had to learn so many new things like how to grow mushrooms(蘑菇), process our Stevia plants, and harvest salt from the ocean. We spent a lot of time reading and studying online to find out all the things we were going to need to do.”
Now after five months, they both feel it’s been going well but Chris admits the first few weeks were difficult. “The first three weeks were very challenging as our bodies adjusted to cutting out coffee, wine and sugar all on the same day,” he says. “After three weeks our energy levels balanced out and our wishes reduced and now we feel great.” Now February has ended. As they come through winter, they feel positive about continuing with this way of living, with their challenge officially(正式地) ending in August.

D. They were discouraged by the difficulty at first.
7. What do we know about British Columbia

Ever wondered if dogs can learn new words Yes, say researchers as they have found that talented dogs may have the ability to learn new words after hearing them only four times.
While previous evidence(以前的证据)seems to show that most dogs do not learn words, unless very well trained, a few individuals(个体) have shown some extraordinary(不一般的) abilities, according to a study published in the journal Scientific Reports.
“We wanted to know under which conditions the talented dogs may learn new words,” said researcher xuekw Claudia Fugazza from the E tv s Loránd University in Hungary(匈牙利). For the study, the team involved(包含)two gifted dogs, Whisky and Vicky Nina. The team exposed(暴露)the dogs to the new words in two different conditions.
In the exclusion-based(基于排除的)task, presented with seven known toys and one new toy, the dogs were able to select(选择)the new toy when presented with a new name. Researchers say this proves that dogs can choose by exclusion(排除)when faced with a new word, they selected the only toy which did not have a known name.
However, this was not the way they would learn the name of the toy. In fact, when they were presented with one more equally(同等地)new name to test their ability to recognize the toy by its name, the dogs got totally confused and failed.
The other condition, the social one, where the dogs played with their owners who pronounced the name of the toy while playing with the dog, proved to be the successful way to learn the name of the toy, even after hearing it only 4 times. “The rapid learning that we observed seems to equal children’s ability to learn many new words at a fast velocity around the age of 18 months,” Fugazza says. “But we do not know whether the learning mechanisms(机制)behind this learning are the same for humans and dogs. ”
To test whether most dogs would learn words this way, 20 other dogs were tested in the same condition, but none of them showed any evidence of learning the toy names, confirming(确认)that the ability to learn words rapidly in the absence(缺乏)of formal training is very rare(少) and is only present in a few talented dogs.
8. What was the purpose of the study published in Scientific Reports
A. To better train dogs’ ability to learn new words.
B. To further make sure of previous evidence about dogs.
C. To confirm the dogs can learn words.
D. To find out suitable conditions for gifted dogs’ new-word learning.
9. How did the dogs react(反应) when exposed to two new names in the first condition?
A. Slow to understand. B. Quick to learn.
C. In puzzlement. D. In surprise.
10. What was found about dogs’ new-word learning in the social condition
A. Learning through playing applied to most dogs.
B. The social condition helped dogs learn new words.
C. Dogs’ new-word learning turned out to be less effective.
D. Dogs shared similar learning mechanisms with children.
11. The underlined word “velocity” has the same meaning as ________ .
A. speed B. quality
C. time D. journey
D
When someone is going through a challenging time, for instance, it can be easy to assume (假设) that he needs advice. It is then going to be as though(好像) he doesn’t know what to do, meaning that he will need to be saved. We can then end up feeling a lot of pressure — pressure that will arise(出现) through having the need to say the right things to this person. As a result of this, it is going to be about listening to what he is going through and simply being there for him; it will be about doing things for him. And company is a good choice.
Then again, this might not be something that causes us to experience any more pressure than we usually do, due to(由于) the fact that this is what we are used to doing. This is not going to be much of a surprise, considering we are likely to live in a world that is focused on doing rather than being.
When someone is going through a challenging time, what he might really need is for another person to just be there for him, meaning that having another person’s presence there will be more than enough. He will be able to express what is going on and this can allow him to let go of a lot of weight off his shoulders and to become clear about what he needs to do. We are then just being and don’t do anything, yet we would have had a big effect on him. You can ask him what happened and say some warm words to him.
This could be seen as a method that women would take as one wouldn’t have done anything, while the need to do something is a more masculine(阳刚的)method. If the other person wants our advice, we can provide it, but this is not something that we have to offer. Sitting back and not doing anything is going to be a challenge for us if we believe that our value is based on what we do. But doing something will stop us from being able to realize that our value is inherent (固有的) and that we don’t need to do anything.
No tools, techniques(技巧), special words or phrases are needed; the only thing that is needed is complete presence.
12. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE according to the passage
A. When someone’s under pressure, you can just sit beside him or her.
B. When someone is going through a challenging time, your company will matter much.
C. Women need a more masculine method because of their instinct(天性).
D. Complete presence means your company, your care and your comfort.
13. What should we do when someone is in trouble according to the passage
A. Come up with useful ideas to comfort him or her.
B. Accompany him or her.
C. Try to realize the importance of company.
D. Find out what makes him or her sad.
14. What can we infer from the passage
A. We should offer help and company to whoever needs.
B. We should arise when in need.
C. Company is important to those low spirits people.
D. Complete presence is needed.
15. What’s the title of this passage
A. What you do will react as others do to you.
B. Never judge(评判)a book by its cover.
C. The presence is the sweet medicine.
D. Necessary company means a lot.

4. Why did the pair decide to produce foods on their own
A. They were isolated(隔绝的) by Pender Island.
B. They couldn't afford to buy them because they lost their jobs.
C. They wanted to be independent.
D. They could hardly buy them in shops.
5. Which words can be used to describe the couple
A. Positive and self-supporting. B. Helpful and positive.
C. Motivated(有动力的) and brave. D. Rich and generous.
6. What can we learn from the last paragraph

B. They couldn't get used to the special way of living at first.
C. Their challenge may last about six months in total.
D. They were discouraged by the difficulty at first.
7. What do we know about British Columbia

【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段最后一句话“We were both out of work when we started, and with the reality check of grocery stores running out of items, it gave us even more energy to see if we could look after ourselves.(当我们开始的时候,我们两个都失业了。并且商店货架上什么都没有了的事实给了我们更大的能量去看清楚我们是否能照顾好我们自己。)”还有最后一段最后一句话“As they come through winter, they feel positive about continuing with this way of living, with their challenge officially(正式地) ending in August.(随着他们度过了冬天,他们对继续这种生活方式感到很乐观,他们的挑战也会在八月份正式结束。)”可知,他们在面临疫情的时候是积极乐观的。另外,根据第三段就可以说明,他们在买不到食物的时候自己种地,养殖,通过上网查他们应该做的事情可知,他们是依靠自己满足他们的生活需求,是自给自足。故选A项。

A. speed B. quality
C. time D. journey

【10题详解】

D Necessary company means a lot.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. C 15. D

【分析】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了陪伴的重要性。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章倒数第二段“This could be seen as a method that women would take as one wouldn’t have done anything, while the need to do something is a more masculine method.(这可以被看作是一种女性会采取的不做任何事情的方法,而需要做一些事情是一种更男性化的方法)”可知,“女人需要更男性化的方法,是因为她们的天性”这句话表述是错误的。故选C。
【13题详解】

【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“He will be able to express what is going on and this can allow him to let go of a lot of weight off his shoulders and to become clear about what he needs to do. We are then just being and don’t do anything, yet we would have had a big effect on him. You can ask him what happened and say some warm words to him.(他将能够表达正在发生的事情,这可以让他放下肩上的重担,清楚自己需要做什么。我们只是存在,什么都不做,但我们会对他产生很大的影响。你可以问他发生了什么事,对他说一些温暖的话)”可推断,对那些情绪低落的人来说,陪伴是很重要的。故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“As a result of this, it is going to be about listening to what he is going through and simply being there for him; it will be about doing things for him. And company is a good choice.(因此,这将是关于倾听他正在经历的事情,仅仅是在他身边;对他有好处。陪伴是一个不错的选择)”及全文可知,文章的主要介绍了陪伴的重要性。所以“Necessary company means a lot.( 必要的陪伴意味着很多)”作为文章标题最为合适。故选D。

【答案】Dear friends,
In recent years, with the popularity of digital devices, students pay little attention to their handwriting. As a result, their handwriting is not so good as it was in the past. In order to protect our Chinese characters and write both nicely and neatly, we’d like to offer some suggestions.
Firstly, spend less time online so that we can have more time to read and take notes. Moreover, we’d better form the habit of practicing handwriting and keeping diaries every day. Besides, it is better to write to our relatives and friends rather than send e-mails. As the saying goes, “The style is the man.” Beautiful and neat handwriting is beneficial to us students. So please attach great importance to our handwriting in future.
