A simple project to help a family in need stopped Luck Mickelson in his tracks. In 2012, he and his family were inspired to build and donate a bunk bed, one bed on top of the other, after learning there were local children who slept on the floor. Shocked to discover how widespread this need was in his community, Mickelson founded Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a nonprofit that builds and delivers beds to children in need.
Born and raised in Idaho, Mickelson, now 41, had a thriving career. He coached his kids' sports teams and fished in the nearby river. But when he met children who were sleeping on the floor, his peaceful life changed course.
Using safety guidelines and his daughter’s bunk bed as a model, Mickelson started buying wood and supplies to build beds with his own money. He recruited friends and family members to help around the holidays. As the word spread, interest and involvement from his and other communities flooded-along with Mickelson's bunk bed output. "That first project, we built 11 bunk beds in my garage, "he said. "The next year, we did 15. Then it doubled every year. In 2017, we built 612 bunk beds.”
With the motto "No kid sleeps on the floor in our town”, the nonprofit and its more than 65 branches have built and delivered more than 1,500 free beds to children across America. But along with the rapid growth, Mickelson was faced with a tough choice: advancing his career or his nonprofit. He chose the latter and went from making "great money to zero money". He's never looked back. "I found that the need I have isn't financial, "he said. “The need I have is seeing the joy on kids’ faces, knowing that I can make a difference.”
4. Why did Mickelson set up Sleep in Heavenly Peace
A. To get more donations. B. To make a big fortune.
C. To inspire his community. D. To donate beds to kids in need.
5. What do we know about Luke Mickelson

A. They showed little interest in it.
B. They were supportive and involved in it.
C. They were doubtful about the safety of the bunk bed.
D. They volunteered to buy beds with their own money.
7. What is Mickelson's attitude to the nonprofit
A. Ambiguous B. Defensive. C. Positive D. Cautious

The clock is ticking. David Brunelli has just swallowed a huge burger. The crowd cheers excitedly as he downs fistfuls of fries.
Welcome to the world of competitive eating.
Brunelli is part of a select group who compete to eat massive quantities of food as quickly as possible. Eating contests may seem like harmless fun, but they have a dark side and some critics are saying it’s time for them to stop.
Pouring crazy amounts of food down our throats is nothing new. Gorging banquets (狼吞虎咽会) was a regular part of ancient Roman culture. In the 1800s, some New York City politicians settled bets through eating challenges. Pie-eating contests have been a Fourth of July tradition for more than a century.
For supporters like Brunelli, though, eating contests are more than a custom. They are a path to fortune.
But prize money does nothing to reduce the health risks of competitive petitive eating can even be life-threatening. In 1991, a man in Virginia suffered a stroke (中风) after eating 38 eggs in 29 seconds; In Florida, in 2012, a man died shortly after winning an eating contest leading a group of doctors to call for a ban on eating contests.
In any event, the risk to competitors is only part of the story. Nearly two-thirds of Americans are overweight, and competitive eating sets a terrible example by encouraging overeating. And in a world where 805 million people go hungry every day, downing ridiculous quantities of food for entertainment seems not just wasteful but also cruel.
For now, though, it seems eating contests are here to stay. Last year, more than three million viewers watched Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest on TV. This year, Matt Stonie ate 182 pieces of bacon in 5 minutes, breaking the world record.
What record will be broken next Do you really want to find out

9. Why does Brunelli take part in the eating contest
A. For food. B. For fun.
C. For honor. D. For money.
10. The examples given in Paragraph 6 are used to show eating contests ________.
A. use unhealthy food
B. waste too much food
C put competitors at risk
D. set a bad example to kids
11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. The author hopes to break the record.
B. The author is eager to know the result.
C. The author wants readers to find out the result.
D. The author disapproves of competitive eating.

Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter have changed the way that people interact and connect on a daily basis. They are changing the face of relationships of every kind. One of the major concerns that have caught the attention of many, is the influence that social media may be having on social anxiety disorders.
If removed from their phone for a few hours or a few days, the average person would likely feel anxious about not being “connected”. Most people have probably experienced an occasion in which they posted a creative photo, and waited to see “how many” or “retweets” they received. If this number is lower than expected, the(自我)ego is going to take a hit. There is also constant checking of the number of “followers” and “friends” that you have, and these numbers can have a direct influence on feelings of acceptance and popularity.
Anxiety can arise from feeling at a loss when faced with too much going on at one time Multitasking can very quickly lead to increased levels of anxiety. Most people can likely relate to feeling the constant need to check their phone while driving, during meals or at work. This desire is actually leading to increased levels of anxiety. The choice to be constantly connected leads to the feeling of having to always make yourself available.
Social anxiety is much different from the anxiety one feels from being offline. It’s a more serious type of anxiety resulting from the fear of being judged by others while in a social interaction. Cases can range from mild--- and are often the cause of a lot of drinking with others to severe, in which case a person may avoid parties and get-togethers altogether.
The degree to which social media and technology are changing our lives and introducing new forms of anxiety is anything but deniable(可否认的). The real question is to what extent are they introducing new disorders or increasing existing ones like social anxiety. It’s certainly a topic worth studying more to determine who is being helped, who is being harmed and how social anxiety can be dealt with.
12 What is the major focus of the text?
A. Human desire for social interaction.
B. The influence of social media on anxiety.
C. Anxiety resulting from interpersonal relationships.
D. The popularity of social media in people’s daily life.
13. How does the author explain social anxiety in Paragraph 2
A. By giving examples. B. By offering statistics.
C. By providing processes. D. By making comparisons.
14. According to the author, which of the following can lead to increased levels of anxiety
A. Not being available for get-togethers. B. Chatting on the phone with a friend.
C. Using the phone while driving. D. Eating meals alone.
15. What does the underlined word “they” in the last paragraph refer to
A. Life changes. B. Anxiety degrees.
C New forms of anxiety. D. Social media and technology.

From the work I did during the summer vacation, I understand that money was not easy to earn. I felt it a shame to wasting food. For the old generation, we advocate saving money. Take my parents for an example, they save every cent they can. When they talk about traveling, they will hesitate and final give up because of money. However, I think reasonable consumption not only include the basic needs, also the amusement. Life is short. We should enjoy every moment and see different people and beautiful sceneries. Most people have the plan to save money, but if they take in a small part, life can be much happy.

A. He originally had a very good career. B. He changed his career from time to time.
C. He used to sleep on the floor when he was a kid. D. He had his own fish farm.
6. How did other people react to Mickelson’s project
A. They showed little interest in it.
B. They were supportive and involved in it.
C. They were doubtful about the safety of the bunk bed.
D. They volunteered to buy beds with their own money.
7. What is Mickelson's attitude to the nonprofit

The clock is ticking David Brunelli has just swallowed a huge burger.

12. What is the major focus of the text?
B 13. A 14. C 15. D

Most people have probably experienced an occasion in which… feelings of acceptance and popularity大多数人可能都有过这样的经历:他们上传了一张有创意的照片,然后等着看自己收到了“多少赞”或“转发”。
Multitasking can very quickly lead to increased levels of anxiety及接下来的举例 check their phone while driving… is actually leading to increased levels of anxiety一心多用很快就会导致焦虑水平上升。
划线词上一句“The degree to which social media and technology are changing our lives and introducing new forms of anxiety is anything but deniable(可否认的)”提到“社交媒体和技术改变人们生活以及给人们带来新的焦虑的程度不可否认”,由此可知,接下来的一句继续指出 “社交媒体和技术带来新的焦虑或增加已有焦虑的程度到底有多大”是要研究的问题,故they指代“社交媒体和技术”,故选D。
文章中的代词it, that, he, him 或them可以指上文提到的人或物,其中it和that还可以指一件事。
文中的小题4,划线词上一句“The degree to which social media and technology are changing our lives and introducing new forms of anxiety is anything but deniable(可否认的).”
