When my friend suggested going to the op shop (二手商店),instantly I thought “I hope no one I know sees me”. It was the same when my cousin commented on my new furniture and Japanese, fine-bone-china bowls and asked where I got them. They were from the local op shop but instead I said “from the antique shop”.
Many people in my Greek-Cypriot community would look down on me if I said I shopped at the op shop. They may pity me, consider me poor, a failure. Immigrants sacrificed their families and homes for a better life. Buying a house and having enough money to live comfortably, to educate your children and see them also live comfortably, are a big part of the immigrant dream, But has this dream made us materialistic at the cost of our own planet
Our love for purchasing the latest trendy clothes or furniture, then donating them when we are tired of them has become normal. I was once like this. But after watching the documentary The True Cost I learned donated clothes that don’t get sold are sent to developing nations, many of them ending up in landfills In addition, your new dress requires electricity and materials to make. But if you buy a second-hand dress, that’s one less dress in a landfill and one less new dress to be made.
A friend introduced me to op shopping only a few years ago. My first item was a dress she gifted me. It was lovely and I loved it. Nobody could tell it was second-hand. This opened me up to purchasing more second-hand high quality branded clothes. Once I visited a friend and was impressed by how she decorated her apartment. “It’s all second-hand” she said. I couldn’t believe it. The truth is a lot of things sold at the op shop are in new or almost new condition. That’s when I made the decision to only buy second-hand things.
Selling second-hand things isn’t anything new but what the planet needs is more buyers. There is so much excess (过量) production in the world. So stop feeling ashamed, and let’s get shopping.

A. To entertain. B. To advertise. C. To persuade. D. To describe.

Just as humans are usually left- or right-handed, many animals favor one side of their body for certain tasks. The strength of this preference varies: some individuals are happy to use either side, while others strongly favor one side(known as being strongly "lateralized")·
The University of Exeter study found that grey squirrels which strongly favored a side did less well on a learning task. They had to learn to use a paw(爪子), rather than their mouth, to get nuts.
"It has been suggested that being strongly lateralized makes brains more efficient, with each hemisphere(半球)focusing on different tasks," said Dr Lisa Leaver. "This could help animals survive, which would explain the evolution of laterality(向侧性)across the animal kingdom."
"In fish and birds, there is evidence that being strongly lateralized is linked to better cognitive(认知的) performance (brain function). However, limited data from studies of mammals (哺乳动物)suggest a weak or even negative relationship. Our study measured speed of learning among grey squirrels and, in line with these previous mammal studies, suggests that strong lateralization is linked to poor cognitive performance," said Dr Leaver.
In the study, wild grey squirrels on the University of Exeter's Streatham Campus were presented with transparent tube containing peanuts. Squirrels usually collect food with their mouth, but the tube was too narrow to allow this, so they had to learn to use a paw. By measuring both how quickly squirrels learned and how strongly they favored a particular paw, the researchers could assess both learning and laterality.
More than 30 squirrels were observed, with 12 providing enough data for inclusion in the study.
The relationship between laterality and human cognitive performance is still unclear, though some research has suggested that less lateralized people may be more creative. "More research on mammals is needed to understand the complex relationship between laterality and cognitive performance," Dr Leaver said.
8. What did the University of Exeter study focus on
A. The habits of grey squirrels. B. The cause of strong lateralization.
C. The evolution process of laterality. D. The effects of lateralization on learning.
9. What can we know from the fourth paragraph
A. Fish and birds have similar brain structures.
B. Most fish and birds have strong lateralization.
C. Strongly lateralized birds are better at learning.
D. Strongly lateralized grey squirrels have a higher IQ.
10. How did the strongly lateralized squirrels act in the study
A. They were slower to get peanuts. B. They got more peanuts than others.
C. They got through the tube quickly. D. They used their paws more skillfully.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Left-handed animals prove more intelligent.
B. Grey squirrels change their habits for food.
C. Laterality is connected with better brains.
D. Strongly "handed" squirrels are less good at learning.
D
When kids sit down to eat lunch at school, fruits and vegetables may not be their first choice. But with more time at the lunch table, they are more likely to pick up those healthy foods. If we want to improve children's nutrition and health, ensuring longer school lunch breaks can help achieve those goals, according to research from the University of Illinois.
“Ten minutes of seated lunch time or less is quite common. Scheduled lunch time may be longer, but students have to wait in line to get their food. This means the amount of time children actually have to eat their meals is much less than the scheduled time,” says Melissa Pflugh Prescott, assistant professor in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition. “During shorter lunch periods, children ate significantly less of the fruit and vegetable parts of their meal, while there was no significant difference in the amount of entrees (主食) they consumed. It makes sense that you might eat the part of the meal you look forward to first, and if there's enough time left you might go towards the other parts. But if there's not enough time, fruit and vegetables are likely to suffer,” Prescott explains.
“Our findings support policies that require at least 20 minutes of seated lunch time at school,” she states. School lunch time policies can be decided at the district level, with some room for individual schools to set their own standards; for example, schools can institute a longer lunch time than the district mandates (授权).
Prescott notes that longer lunch time can also have beneficial effects for children beyond healthy eating. “The amount of seated time children have is also a really valuable time for them to connect with their friends; they might have limited opportunities to do so throughout the school day. We found significantly fewer social interactions during the 10-minute lunch time. That indicates other positive outcomes may come from longer lunch breaks as well,” she concludes.
12. Why do students eat less of the fruit and vegetables according to Prescott
A. They are unwilling to wait in line.
B. There is not enough time for them.
C. They're not used to a balanced diet.
D. There is too much study pressure on them.
13. What does the underlined word “institute” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Set up.
B. Put off.
C. Make use of.
D. Run out of.
14. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. Key reasons for a longer lunch time.
B. The importance of a healthy diet.
C. Other benefits of a longer lunch time.
D. The detailed lunch time arrangements.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. Eating lunch at school makes children healthier
B. Longer school lunch time enables children to learn better
C. Kids at school spend much time waiting in line for lunch
D. Longer lunch time helps kids eat more fruit and vegetables

After a long day, Zhang Tian finally got back to his small room, feeling tired. He had started working at seven in the morning, and it was eight in the evening now. He had to prepare his lessons for the following day. This is a typical day for Zhang Tian. Coming to Guizhou Province to teach has been quite an experience for him.
Zhang Tian graduated from university and got a teacher's certificate last year. His parents, like most, hoped he would go to a big city to find a teaching job. Likewise, his friends all left his hometown for work in Shanghai or Beijing. Zhang Tian felt differently, however. He wanted to start a new lifestyle. He had met wonderful teachers from small villages during his early school years and he was inspired by them to go and teach where he was needed the most. For that reason he applied for and became a volunteer teacher in a village school. Bringing with him lots of books, clothes, and two pairs of trainers, Zhang Tian travelled to the village with an eager heart. He imagined all sorts of exciting things about living independently and teaching in a village.
However, not everything lived up to Zhang Tian's hopes. The school had just three teachers and Zhang Tian was the only English teacher. The other two local teachers were responsible for maths and Chinese. The school was much smaller than he had expected, with only three classrooms. In front of the classrooms, there was a playground which got dusty on windy days and muddy on rainy days. Living in the village was also more challenging than he had thought. The power and water supplies were unstable, so he could only shower every three or four days, and he had to learn how to cook.

“It’s all second-hand,” she said.
4. What kind of feeling is expressed in Paragraph 1
A. Pride. B. Embarrassment. C. Delight. D. Sympathy.
5. What are many people in the author’s community like
A. They are probably materialistic.
B. They care about the environment.
C. They think highly of op shopping.
D. They look down upon immigrants.
6 What was the author encouraged to do after visiting her friend’s apartment
A. Watch the documentary The True Cost.
B. Donate more to local charities.
C. Avoid shopping too much.
D. Stop buying new things.
7. What’s the purpose of the text
A. To entertain. B. To advertise. C. To persuade. D. To describe.
B 5. A 6. D 7. C

根据第二段第一句“Many people in my Greek-Cypriot community would look down on me if I said I shopped at the op shop. ”(如果我说我在二手商店购物,在我的希族塞浦路斯社区的许多人会看不起我。)和最后一句“But has this dream made us materialistic at the cost of our own planet ”(但是这个梦想是否让我们以牺牲我们自己的星球为代价而变得物质主义呢 )可知,“我”的社区里的人们可能非常追求物质。故选A。
根据倒第二段最后一句“That’s when I made the decision to only buy second-hand things.”(就在那时,我决定只买二手的东西。)
根据最后一段最后一句“ There is so much excess (过量) production in the world. So stop feeling ashamed, and let’s get shopping.”(地球生产过剩。

D 9. C 10. A 11. D

根据第二段中的“grey squirrels which strongly favored a side did less well on a learning task(灰松鼠在学习任务中表现得不太好)”以及第四段中的“Our study measured speed of learning among grey squirrels(我们的研究测量了灰松鼠的学习速度)”可知,这个研究旨在发现动物的向侧性与学习(认知)能力的关系。
根据第四段中的“In fish and birds, there is evidence that being strongly lateralized is linked to better cognitive(认知的)performance(brain function). (在鱼类和鸟类中,有证据表明,强烈的侧化与更好的认知表现(大脑功能)有关。)”可知,已经有证据表明,高度偏侧的鸟类更擅长学习。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“Our study measured speed of learning among grey squirrels and, in line with these previous mammal studies, suggests that strong lateralization is linked to poor cognitive performance(我们的研究测量了灰松鼠的学习速度,与之前对哺乳动物的研究一致,表明强烈的侧化与较差的认知表现有关)”和第五段内容可知,在这个实验中,有强烈的向侧性的灰松鼠表现出很弱的认知能力(即用爪子得到透明管中的食物)。 故选A。

C They're not used to a balanced diet.
B 13. A 14. C 15. D

根据第二段的“During shorter lunch periods, children ate significantly less of the fruit and vegetable parts of their meal, while there was no significant difference in the amount of entrees (主食) they consumed”(在较短的午餐时间里,孩子们摄入的水果和蔬菜明显较少,而他们摄入的主菜数量没有显著差异)可知,孩子们吃蔬菜、水果太少,是因为他们的午餐时间不够。故选B。
根据前一句“School lunch time policies can be decided at the district level, with some room for individual schools to set their own standards”(学校午餐时间政策可以由地区决定,个别学校也有设定自己标准的空间)可知,各地区学校可根据自己情况设定午餐时间。 故选A。
根据最后一段,尤其是“Prescott notes that longer lunch time can also have beneficial effects for children beyond healthy eating”(普雷斯科特指出,除了健康饮食之外,较长的午餐时间对儿童也有有益的影响)可知,本段主要叙述实施更长的午餐时间还有很多其他方面的益处。故选C。

Today witnessed a rewarding activity—Tree Planting organized by the Student Union of our school.
Early in the morning, my classmates and I headed for a hill nearby with tools and seedlings. On our arrival, we got down to working together as planned. Some dug the pits and put seedlings in, some filled the pits with earth, and others watered them. Through our joint efforts the hillside was lined with rows of seedlings, bathed in the sunshine.
