With about 1,000-meter-high steep cliffs (陡峭的悬崖) around, there Xiazhuang, Chongqing had only one pathway out of the village, and it took villagers three days to walk to the main town. People there used to risk their lives going out of the mountain village. In the 40 years to 1997, 23 people had died from falling off the cliff while cutting firewood or travelling to the county seat, and 75 people had been injured or disabled while doing the same activities. Then, village head Mao Xianglin held a meeting in 1997 and suggested building a road snaking along the mountains, but almost no villager agreed because they had no money, no machines and no confidence to take on the tough project.
Later that year, around 100 people volunteered to do the work after Mao’s efforts. Workers from ropes and used hammers, drills and even explosives to create the road. Falling rocks and other dangers led to the deaths of six villagers. When they slept in caves (洞穴) at night, they tied a rope around their bodies with the other end tied to the root of an old tree to make sure they did not fall off the cliff.
“Mountains had isolated us from the outside for generations. We had to do something to ensure the next generation could go out of the mountains for a good life,” Mao said. When the 8-kilometer road was completed in 2004, it enabled many villagers to travel out and find work. Incomes increased as a result. Mao will retire in five years, planning to widen the current road and focus on ecotourism. “The spirit of the Xiazhuang people can’t be lost and has to be passed down from generation to generation,” he said.

C
I must have always known reading was very important because the first memories I have as a child deal with books. There was not one night that I don’t remember mom reading me a storybook by my bedside. I was extremely inspired by the wonderful way the words sounded.
I always wanted to know what my mom was reading. Hearing mom say, “I can’t believe what’s printed in the newspaper this morning,” made me want to grab it out of her hands and read it myself. I wanted to be like my mom and know all of the things she knew. So I carried around a book, and each night, just to be like her, I would pretend to be reading.
This is how everyone learned to read. We would start off with sentences, then paragraphs, and then stories. It seemed an unending journey, but even as a six-year-old girl I realized that knowing how to read could open many doors. When mom said, “The C-A-N-D-Y is hidden on the top shelf,” I knew where the candy was. My progress in reading raised my curiosity, and I wanted to know everything. I often found myself telling my mom to drive more slowly, so that I could read all of the road signs we passed.
Most of my reading through primary, middle and high school was factual reading. I read for knowledge, and to make A’s on my tests. Sometimes, I would read a novel that was assigned, but I didn’t enjoy this type of reading. I liked facts, things that are concrete. I thought anything abstract left too much room for argument.
Now that I’m growing and the world I once knew as being so simple is becoming more complex, I find myself needing a way to escape. By opening a novel, I can leave behind my burdens and enter into a wonderful and mysterious world where I am now a new character. In these worlds I can become anyone. I don’t have to write down what happened or what technique the author was using when he or she wrote this. I just read to relax.
We’re taught to read because it’s necessary for much of human understanding. Reading is an important part of my life. Reading satisfies my desire to keep learning. And I’ve found that the possibilities that lie within books are limitless.
8. Why did the author want to grab the newspaper out of mom’s hands?
A. She wanted mom to read the news to her.
B. She couldn’t wait to tear the newspaper apart.
C. She couldn’t help but stop mom from reading.
D. She was eager to know what had happened.
9. According to Paragraph 3, the author’s reading of road signs shows___________.
A. her own way to find herself
B. her eagerness to develop her reading ability
C. her growing desire to know the world around her
D. her effort to remind mom to obey traffic rules
10. The author takes novel reading as a way to___________.
A. explore a mysterious land
B. develop an interest in learning
C. get away from a confusing world
D. learn about the adult world
11. What could be the best title for the passage?
A. The Pleasure of Reading B. Growing Up with Reading
C. The Magic of Reading D. Reading Makes a Full Man
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. C 11. B

Parents often believe that they have a good relationship with their teenagers. But last summer, Joanna and Henry noticed a change in their older son. Suddenly he seemed to be talking far more to his friends than to his parents. “The door to his room is always shut,” Joanna noted.
Tina and Mark noticed similar changes in their 14year- old daughter. “She used to cuddle up (依偎) against me on the sofa and talk,” said Mark. “Now we joke that she does this only when she wants something. Sometimes she wants to be treated like a little girl and sometimes like a young lady. The problem is understanding which time is which.”
Before age 11, children like to tell their parents what’s on their mind. “In fact, parents are first on the list,” said Michael Riera, author of Uncommon Sense for Parents with Teenagers. “This completely changes during the teen years,” Riera explained. “They talk to their friends first, then maybe their teachers, and their parents last.”
Parents who know what’s going on in their teenagers’ lives are in the best position to help them.
To break down the wall of silence, parents should create chances to understand what their children want to say, and try to find ways to talk and write to them. And they must give their children a mental (思想的) break, for children also need freedom, though young. Another thing parents should remember is that to be a friend, not a manager, with their children is a better way to know them.
12. “The door to his room is always shut” suggests that the son ________.
A. keeps himself away from his parents
B. begins to dislike his parents
C. is always busy with his study
D. doesn’t want to be ignored
13. What troubles Tina and Mark most is that ________.
A. their daughter isn’t as lovely as before
B. they don’t know what to say to their daughter
C. they can’t read their daughters mind exactly
D. their daughter talks with them only when she needs help
14. Which of the following best explains “the wall of silence” in the last paragraph
A. Teenagers talk a lot with their friends.
B. Teenagers do not talk much with their parents.
C. Teenagers do not want to understand their parents.
D. Teenagers talk little about their own lives.
15. We can learn from the passage that _______.
A. parents are unhappy with their growing children
B. parents have to talk with children face to face
C. parents shouldn’t be angry with teenagers
D. parents should try to understand their teenagers
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. B 15. D

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have hisbreakfast as quickly as possible.
“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird " Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum," Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I've been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them.”
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove down.
Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark your papers now," he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter. David and Mary got 100 percent on the spelling test!" Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter's was an English-Chinese dictionary—the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. "This is my happiest moment,” Peter thought.
After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribution" confused him. It didn't seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the wordlist. “C-o-n-t-r-i-b-u-s-i-o-n,”he whispered. He had spelledit wrong.
“What am I to do ” Peter said to himself. “I expect my classmates to think I'm a master in spelling. If I tell Mr. White one of my spelling words is wrong, I'll have to give my prize back, or I will become an example for telling a lie". Staring at the red sign “100%” which was written at his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, “We ought to be an honest person.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Mr. White held up Peter’s test paper. “Class,” he said, “Peter did something even more important than spelling every word correctly on a test.” Mr.White smiled at Peter. “He taught us all a lesson on being honest.”
Paragraph 2:
Peter looked around and found many of his classmates were smiling at him. “Peter, I want you to have this dictionary because you set a good example for all of us, ” Mr. White said. Peter took the dictionary from his teacher and expressed his thanks to Mr. White. Meanwhile, he couldn’t wait to show it to Mum and tell her one of his best days ever.

C The Magic of Reading D. Reading Makes a Full Man
D

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
