Activities for Families with Children
There are plenty of things to do and see around Cusco, Peru, that children will enjoy.

Many children will enjoy the opportunity to ride a horse. The Happy Ranch Horse Farm

If you enjoy local food, taking a cooking class could be fun. Several restaurants offer classes,

Hot-air balloons
A hot-air balloon ride will give you great views of the city. The balloon goes up about 200

altitude for about 10 minutes. Prices are $20 for an adult, half price for children.
Ceramics classes

It was Mother’s Day morning last year and I was doing my shopping at our local
supermarket with my five-year-old son, Tenyson. As we were leaving, we found that only
minutes earlier an elderly woman had fallen over at the entrance and had hit her head on the
concrete. Her husband was with her, but there was blood everywhere and the woman was
embarrassed and clearly in shock.
Walking towards the scene, Tenyson became very upset about what had happened to the
couple. He said to me, “Mum, it’s not much fun falling over in front of everyone.”
At the front of the supermarket a charity(慈善 ) group had set up a stand selling cooked
sausages and flowers to raise funds. Tenyson suggested that we should buy the lady a flower. “It
will make her feel better,” he said. I was amazed that he’d come up with such a sweet idea. So
we went over to the flower seller and asked her if we could buy a flower for the lady to cheer
her up. “Just take it,” she replied. “I can’t take your money for such a wonderful gesture.”
By now paramedics(救援人员)had arrived, and were attending the injured woman. As we
walked up to her, my son became intimidated by all the blood and medical equipment. He said
he was just too scared to go up to her.
Instead I gave the flower to the woman’s husband and told him, “My son was very upset
for your wife and wanted to give her this flower to make her feel better.”
At that, the old man started crying and said, “Thank you so much, you have a wonderful
son. Happy Mother’s Day to you.”
The man then bent down and gave his wife the flower, telling her who it was from. Though
badly hurt and shaken, the old lady looked up at Tenyson with love in her eyes and gave him a
little smile.

Your house may have an effect on your figure. Experts say the way you design your home
could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your
environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into
part of your diet plan.
Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage
overeating, for people are often less self-conscious( 难 为 情 ) when they’re in poorly lit
places—and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn’t have enough window light,
get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.
Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people
who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room.
Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us feel less
hungry. So when it’s time to repaint, go blue.
Don’t forget the clock—or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70
fewer calories(卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track
of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you’re at it, actually sit
down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less
likely to rush through a meal.
Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22
percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large
spoon over a smaller one, total intake(摄入) jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30
percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.

B. Reduce body intake
C. Burn more calories
D. Regain their appetites
10. What are people advised to do at mealtimes
A. Eat quickly.
B. Play fast music.
C. Use smaller spoons.
D. Turn down the lights.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Is Your House Making You Fat
B. Ways of Serving Dinner
C. Effects of Self-consciousness
D. Is Your Home Environment Relaxing

America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet
disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange
Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while — then no more. If the
same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can
be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more
slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending(延伸) sometimes deeply into both
families.
Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their
home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality(好客) easily.
Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they
include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness to us if it

requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where
we may be willing to spend time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the
middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign
friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly cannot
manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably
expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we
will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and
real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.
For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than
to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!
12. The writer of this passage must be ______.
A. an American B. a Chinese C. a student D. a professor
13. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage
A. Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families.
B. Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives.
C. Americans will continue their friendships again even after a long break.
D. Americans always show their warmth even if they are very busy.
14. From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visit an
American friend, we will probably be ______.
A. warmly welcomed at the airport
B. offered a ride to his home
C. treated to dinner in a restaurant
D. treated hospitably at his home
15. What can be a suitable title for this passage
A. Friendships between Chinese
B. Friendships between Americans
C. Americans’ and Chinese’s views of friendships
D. Americans’ hospitality

How to make friends at a new school
Starting with a new school can be difficult. Everything seems to be different, and you
don’t even know where to go for your own classes. 16 However, if you use these
skills, you can quickly turn some of those strangers into friends.
Be yourself.
17 If some people don’t accept you, they’re not the kind of friends you need.
People often stay together because they have similar interests. For example, someone who does
a lot of sport may make friends with those who also run or swim a lot.
18
Remember to be nice to the people you meet at your new school. If you think that you will
say something that may make them feel sad, do not say anything and just nod your head if they
talk to you. Also, remember to be as helpful as possible!
Believe in yourself.
A smile goes a long way. When you walk in the halls, don’t keep your eyes on the floor.
Raise your head and make eye contact(目光接触)with other people. 19 Introduce
yourself. Tell them your name and where you’re from.
Remember people’s names.
You like it when people use your name, and so do other people. 20 Besides, ask
them in a kind way if they have a nickname(昵称). You’d be surprised how often this might
come in handy.
A. People may become angry if you just begin by saying “Hey” each time.
B. Be friendly to others.
C. Join after-school activities you like.
D. Making new friends can be hard, too.
E. Don’t sit at the back of the classroom where other people don’t notice you!
F. If you see someone you know, smile or say “Hi”.
G. Never change who you are to try and fit in.
