“We aim to be the most customer-addicted company in the world,” declares the opening line
in the 700-page booklet from Kuaishou, a Chinese video app. The firm's revenues(收入)have
skyrocketed in recent years, reaching 25 billion yuan in the first six months of 2020, which mostly
equals to that of the whole 2019.
However successful it is, two threats are around the corner. The first comes from China's
increasingly strict regulators. In November they ordered that video apps like Kuaishou set daily
and monthly limits on the amount that users can tip live-streamers.
Douyin, TikTok’s Chinese sister app and Kuaishou’s strongest competitor, is better separated
from the regulatory stress. Like Kuaishou, it operates a live-streaming business; but unlike its
competitor, it earns most of its revenues from online adverts.
For comparison, adverts accounted for just 28% of Kuaishou’s revenue mix in the first half of
2020. The company may now try to raise that share. To do so Kuaishou will have to overcome the
out-of-date opinion that its users are mainly folks living in small cities and rural areas with less
money to buy advertised products.
The second threat is the possibility for a price war between Kuaishou and Douyin. For both
platforms, their video content whose quality depends on the gift of the broadcaster behind it plays
a significant part in attracting users. Therefore, a race to the bottom begins and each firm lowers
its "take rate"(提成率)on tips and adverts sales to attract popular broadcasters from other apps,
though it would decrease profits.
Despite its home challenges, Kuaishou is aiming to open its global market. But it still lacks
the fame of Tik Tok, though that may prove to be a lucky thing.
24. Which of the following is TRUE
A. Douyin earns money mostly from online adverts.
B. Kuaishou is good at avoiding the regulatory stress
C. Kuaishou's revenue doubled in 2020 compared with 2019
D. Douyin will certainly make more money in the near future.
25. How does Kuaishou earn profits
A. From online adverts.
B. From selling products.
C. From “take rate” on tips and adverts sales.
D. From getting tips from customers.
26. What’s the author’s attitude to Kuaishou’s competition with Douyin
A. supportive B. objective
C. negative D. optimistic
27. What’s the main idea of the passage
A. The challenges Kuaishou are facing.
B. Kuaishou’s threat to Douyin.
C. Kuaishou’s way to the global market.
D. The competition between Kuaishou and Douyin.

Last Tuesday, a robotic ship called the Mayflower Autonomous Ship (MAS) took off
from Plymouth, England. Its mission (使命) was to recreate the 1620 crossing of the Atlantic by
the Mayflower, which brought the first European settlers to the USA.But unlike the original
Mayflower, there are no people on the MAS. Everything about the ship is designed to run
automatically. The ship is guided by an artificial intelligence (AI) system called "AI Captain".
The MAS is a project run by a group called ProMare along with the computer company,
IBM. The ship's electric motor is powered by solar energy. The goal of the project is to test
different kinds of technologies for collecting information about the sea. If these can be handled by
machines, it could be a big advance in ocean research.
Because the MAS didn't have to carry humans, its designers were free to think about how to
make the best ship for the job. In addition to cameras and radar to help the ship guide itself, the
ship is carrying many different kinds of tools and sensors. It has special listening devices which
can detect whales and dolphins. It even has a special "tongue" which can report back on the
chemicals in the water.
Last Friday morning, scientists tracking the ship noticed that it was going about half as fast as
it should have been going. The AI Captain was working well, but there seemed to be something
slowing the motor down. Since the ship had only covered 10% of the way across the Atlantic, the
team decided to bring it back to Plymouth so they could fix the problem and send it out again.
They sent the MAS instructions to turn back.
When the MAS finally does put out to sea again, it is expected to take about three weeks to
cross the Atlantic Ocean. The fastest speed for the MAS is about 10 mph (16 kph). That may seem
slow, but it's about 5 times faster than the original Mayflower, which took 66 days to make the
journey.
28.What is the main mission of the MAS project
A.Take more Europeans across the Atlantic.
B.Explore the ocean with high technologies.
C.Develop new artificial intelligence system.
D.Test the new robotic ship of IBM on the sea.
29.What happened to the MAS on the sea
A.There was something wrong with the AI Captain.
B.The scientists failed to guide the ship completely.
C.The ship couldn't reach its destination as planned.
D.The robotic ship's electric motor didn't work well.
30.What can we know from the last paragraph
A.The robotic ship will set sail again soon.
B.The journey will be difficult and dangerous.
C.The entire journey will be about 2, 100 miles.
D.The MAS will travel farther than the original one.
31.What's the best title for the text
A.A Robotic Ship Guided by the AI Captain System.
B.Self-Driving Mayflower Ship Forced to Turn Back.
C.The Fastest Robotic Ship Sailing Across the Atlantic.
D.Another Mayflower Recreating the Cross-Atlantic Trip.

The moon hasn’t had an easy time over the years. Since the beginning of the solar system
4.5 billion years ago, its gray and lifeless surface has been repeatedly hit by space rocks, leaving
behind a landscape full of broken stones. Beneath this surface, however, hide the moon’s most
attracting secrets for human explorers, from a large amount of ice for producing drinking water
to rocket fuel. More importantly, mapping the moon’s subsurface can show some hidden periods
of solar system history. This is confirmed by fresh results from a Chinese rover (月球车).
The latest results come from the Chang’e-4 mission, run by the China National Space
Administration. Launched in December 2018 and reaching the moon in early January 2019, the
mission became the first to land on the far side of the natural satellite, targeting a region near the
lunar South Pole called the South Pole-Aitken Basin. The Chang’e-4 rover is still operational
today and has been slowly moving across this region, traveling a few hundred meters since it
landed.
Using a radar instrument on Chang’e-4, researchers have found that the rover is likely
sitting on different layers of ejecta ( 喷 出 物 ) and a very clear order of layers can be seen.
The rover’s radar instrument was able to enter up to 40 meters below the surface of the moon,
more than twice the distance achieved by the former, the Chang’e-3 mission, which landed on
the moon near side in December 2013. Data from the latest mission show three different layers
beneath the rover. It is not currently possible to date the layers under Chang’e-4. But they do
provide some information about lunar history dating back about four billion years.
The rover is continuing to move across the surface, making regular stops to take
measurements and use its instruments.
32. What is the most important purpose of human’s exploration of the moon
A. To seek fresh drinking water.
B. To find hidden rocket fuel.
C. To study different layers of ejecta.
D. To uncover the hidden history of solar system.
33. What do we know about the Chang’e-4 mission
A. It landed on the moon about five years later than Chang’e-3.
B. It is the first to travel around the moon during the exploration.
C. It took over a year from launch to land the far side of the moon.
D. A radar instrument helped it to enter 40 meters below the surface of the moon.
34. In which part of a magazine can this passage be read
A. Historical Story. B. Science Fiction.
C. Scientific Front. D. Chinese Economy.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the article
A. China’s Moon Rover — a Deeper Look At the Far Side
B. China’s Moon Rover — a Starting Research On the Moon
C. Chang’e-4 — a Closer Observer Into the Heart of the Moon
D. Chang’e-4 — A Chinese Space Mission Leading the World

There are many benefits of rock climbing for kids. The most obvious ones are physical.
Rock climbing is an intense physical activity requiring strength and flexibility. For senior
climbers, rock climbing can be a good way to build strength while completing certain courses.
36. Even though rock climbing may not seem as intense as running, it does work to keep the
body healthy.
37. Rock climbing requires strategies and focus in order to make it to the top. Children
who have difficulty concentrating can often develop their mental focus through rock climbing. A
feeling of accomplishment might also be seen as a mental benefit. This often encourages increased
physical activity to meet the next challenge.
Rock climbing is generally not competitive for children. Some children are shy or
uninterested in competing with others. 38. However, activities like rock climbing do involve
social skills, but they do not involve the same type of cooperation as a team sport.
Some parents may be concerned that rock climbing for kids is not safe because of the heights
involved. However, when all safety measures are observed and the child is well informed about
the dangers of the activity, the danger involved could be almost entirely cleared. 39. This makes
the activity even less dangerous.
Parents can climb with children and learn together. This activity is a great bonding
experience for climbers of all ages, which can be excellent for the children involved. 40.
A.Mental benefits of rock climbing for kids are equally important.
B.It is important for rock climbing training to involve a great deal of flexibility training.
C.Besides, children often sign up for specially designed safer courses.
D.For beginners, the challenges are usually kept at a manageable level.

Why should spiders be our friends The reason is that they destroy so many insects 61
(include) some of the greatest enemies of the human race. Insects would make it impossible for us
62 (live) in the world, for they would devour all our crops and kill our flocks and herds if it
were not for the 63 (protect) we get from insect-eating animals. We owe a lot to the birds
and beasts who eat insects but all of them put together kill only a fraction of the number 64
(destroy) by spiders. Moreover, unlike some of the other insect eaters, spiders never do the 65
(little) harm to us or our belongings. Spiders are not insects, 66 many people think, nor even
nearly related to them. One can tell the difference almost at a glance, for a spider always has eight
legs and an insect never more than six. How many spiders are engaged in this work 67 our
behalf One authority on spiders made a census of the spiders in a grass field in the south of England
and he estimated that there were more than 2,250,000 in one acre. Spiders are busy for at least half
the year 68 (kill) insects. 69 is impossible to make more than the wildest guess at how
many they kill, but they are hungry creatures, not content with only three meals a day. It is estimated
that the 70 (weigh) of all the insects destroyed by spiders in Britain in one year would be
greater than that of all the human beings in the country.

【范文】
We all want to win and know what it is like to lose. Six weeks ago, I participated in a city
marathon for amateurs which was being organized to help raise money for charity. I ran my race
relaxed and confident, , even though my limits were being tested like never before. I didn't care
about the result.
Almost nobody likes to come second, but whether you come first or last, it is important to
remember that at any sporting event, you face two opponents: your fellow competitions and
yourself. A true sportsperson will make the right decisions for the right reasons and never worry
about failure.

Text 1
W: Is it Monday already Where did the weekend go At least I have my regular Tuesday dancing
class to look forward to.
M: I envy you. My week will be made up of conferences and interviews.
Text 2
W: Guess what I was interviewed for the Six O’clock News on TV. They were asking people for
their views on pollution.
M: Really Wow! Turn on the TV. It starts in five minutes.
Text 3
M: I’m going to Tom’s house, Mom. Could you give me a lift My bike is out of action.
W: Don’t be so lazy, Peter. He only lives half a mile away. If you never walk anywhere, you’ll soon
become overweight.
Text 4
M: I stepped on the dog’s tail by accident this morning. Then I hit my head against the door and
knocked a cup off the shelf in the kitchen.
W: It doesn’t surprise me. The damage you cause is costing us a serious amount of money.
Text 5
W: I’ve bandaged the wound and I’ll give you some tablets for the pain. Tell me, how did you injure
your foot so badly
M: I was handing my homework to the teacher when I tripped over another student’s bag.
Text 6
M: Mom, why do you bother growing vegetables in the garden Carrots, for instance, are very cheap
to buy.
W: Because food I grow myself tastes better. When I grow potatoes or onions, I grow them the
natural way so I know what has gone into them.
M: But it takes a lot of work digging the garden.
W: Yes, but that is what nature is really like. And look how much you enjoy my beans. My corn was
your favorite when you were little.
M: I must admit that your vegetables are tastier than the kind you buy.
Text 7
W: Was everything OK, sir Would you like me to bring you the dessert menu
M: It was absolutely delicious and I have eaten quite enough, thank you. However, because I’m
greedy…yes, I will have the dessert menu.
W: Ha-ha. Here it is. M: Is there anything you would recommend
W: The Chef’s Special is very popular. It’s the strawberry pie. Then there’s the chocolate cake.
That’s the one I like best.
M: I’ll have to give the pie a miss. I have an allergy. The fruit salad looks nice, but I trust your
judgement, so I’ll have your favorite.
W: OK. By the way, there’s a taxi outside. Did you order one
M: I did. But if it’s mine, he’s 10 minutes early. Could you ask him to wait
W: It’s my pleasure.
Text 8
W: Hey John, do you need any help with your house project today I saw you struggling a bit when
you were on your own yesterday. I wanted to come over and help then, but I was really busy
grading my students’ essays.
M: Thanks for the offer, Gail. I couldn’t ask you to waste your afternoon helping me, though. It’s a
difficult job, and the summer heat is not making it any easier.
W: Don’t be silly. You have helped me plenty of times since I moved to this neighborhood.
Remember when you helped me replace my old windows and put that apple tree in the ground
I can definitely help you with this.
M: I suppose you’re right, but I don’t want to make you climb on my roof. Would you just hold the
ladder for me so it doesn’t fall over I think without having to worry about keeping my balance
so much, I will be able to work much quicker.
W: No problem. I can do anything to make you feel better and less in danger.

W: There is some smoke. I wonder where it is coming from. There aren’t any factories over there,
are there
M: No. Maybe someone is having a barbecue.
W: It must be the world’s biggest barbecue. That smoke is a hundred feet high.
M: Listen, Sirens. There is your answer. There is always trouble for someone.
W: It looks to be coming from those new houses across the park. Just imagine moving into a new
house and then it burns down.
M: It may not be that. Maybe it’s just a garden fire that has got out of control.
W: Oh look, here is someone who will know all about it. If there is any news to be told, Liz will
have it.
M: Now don’t be unkind. She’s a valuable source of neighborhood information.
W: Yes, who needs radio or newspapers when Liz is around
M: She does tend to overstate. I think the newspapers are definitely more accurate than her. W: Bless
her. But she’s the kindest person I know.
M: I know. She loves looking after our children. Anyone who can tolerate them deserves a medal.
W: Hey, look. The smoke has gone. That was quick. What would you say — 20 minutes or half an
hour
M: Those firefighters don’t mess about. It was 3:00 p.m. when the smoke appeared and it’s only
3:40 p.m. now.

Good evening. This is Mark Vapor with the Nightly News at nine. Our top story tonight is the train
crash on the Red Line, between Maples Boulevard and 4th Avenue. We’ve just gotten a report from
police on the scene that fortunately, no one was seriously injured. The accident apparently occurred
because of an electrical problem with the track signals. Traffic in the area is stopped, so drivers
should avoid going to the Hilltop area for the next few hours until the accident is cleared up. This is
also, of course, causing major delays for train riders. Check the city’s website for up-to-date train
times. The rest of the city looks good for a Friday night. Traffic is still backed up on the bridge
heading east, but it should clear up in about an hour. Westward traffic has no delays. And now, let’s
take a look at the weather for this weekend. Tonight, skies will remain clear. There will be some fog
early tomorrow morning, especially on the south side of the city. That should go away by 11:00, and
then temperatures will quickly rise from a morning high of 76 degrees to 91 degrees by 3:00 p.m.
Sunday will follow the same pattern, but the hottest it will get is 87 degrees. Enjoy your Friday night
and don’t forget to check back tomorrow morning with me, Mark Vapor. I’ll bring you the top
headlines and traffic updates every hour from seven until noon.
