To Patti Wilson, life has never been a bed of roses.
At a very young age, Patti Wilson was told by her doctor that she was an epileptic (癫痫患者). Her father, Jim Wilson, is a morning runner. One day she said, “Daddy. I'd love to run with you every day, but I'm afraid I’ll have a seizure (发作).” Her father told her, “If you do, I know how to control it, so let’s start running!” That's just what they did every day. It was a wonderful experience for them to share.
After a few weeks of running, she told her father, “Daddy, I'd love to break the world’s long distance running record for women.” Her father checked and found that the farthest any woman had run was 80 miles (129 km). As a new student in the college, Patti announced, “I'm going to run from Orange Country up to San Francisco (a distance of 644 km).”
For the second year, she went on. “I'm going to run to Portland, Oregon (2, 414 km). As a junior, I’lI run to St Louis (about 3, 218 km). As a senior, I'll run to the White House (more than 4,800 km away).”
Because of her epileptic, her doctor told her to stop running, but she said she just treated it as a small problem. That year, she completed her run to San Francisco wearing a T-shirt that read, “I love epileptics.” Her dad ran every mile at her side, and her mum, a nurse, followed in a car behind them in case anything went wrong.
In her second year in college, Patti’s classmates got behind her. They built a huge poster that read, “Run, Patti, Run!” She completed the run to Portland and after four months, she arrived in Washington and shook the hand of the president of the United States.
