Running like the wind, roaring(咆哮) like the thunder, tigers have long been feared and respected as a king of the animal world. But last week a report said that there are no more than 30 wild tigers left in South China.
This was the conclusion of a team of scientists from China’s State Forestry Administration and the World Nature Fund.
The South China tiger, also known as the Chinese tiger,is native to southern China. In the 1950’s,there were over 4,000 tigers found in mountain forests in the country. But due to the destruction of their natural habitat(栖息地) and uncontrolled hunting,it has been pushed on to the list of the world’s top ten most endangered species.
Sixty-six of the big cats can be found in the cages of a dozen zoos around China. But they are nothing like their wild cousins. They have lost their natural skills such as hunting and killing. If they were set free, they could not look after themselves.
“Breeding has damaged the quality of the species,” said Pei Enle, deputy director of the Shanghai Zoo.
To reintroduce the species into the wild, the country started a programme to send five to ten young tigers to South Africa.Four of them have already arrived.Progress has been made as two elder tigers have recovered some of their instincts(本能) and can hunt wild animals by themselves at the African base.
“South Africans are very experienced in reintroducing big animals to the wild. The country has very good natural conditions for the tigers to learn in,” said Lu Jun,office director of the National Wildlife Research and Development Centre.“We tried in Fujian Province, but it was not successful as there was not a complete eco-chain(生物链) and there was a lack of space.”
21.Why has the South China tiger become one of the world’s top ten most endangered species
A.Because it has lost its natural instincts.
B.Because there is not a complete eco-chain.
C.Because there is no space for it.
D.Because uncontrolled hunting has destroyed its natural living conditions.
22.How is the programme of sending several tigers to South Africa getting on
A.Its effect still remains to be seen.
B.Two tigers can already compete with their wild cousins.
C.Some of the tigers are already on the road to recovering their natural skills.
D.The tigers should be able to recover their instincts completely.
23.What is the purpose of sending young tigers to South Africa
A.To help the tigers recover their ability to live in the wild.
B.To provide them with a better environment.
C.To get the tigers to go on a tour.
D.To find a complete eco-chain for them.
B

Striking footage(镜头) recorded for NationalGeographic shows a dying polar bear struggling to find food on a land without ice or snow. The poor creature can be seen dragging its bony frame(骨架) across the rough land and searching for food in a bin.
Paul Nicken, the photographer who shot the heart-breaking footage, says the sight reduced him to tears.“We stood there crying—filming with tears rolling down our cheeks,” he said. They found the dying creature on Canada’s Baffin Island—an area that has seen an extreme reduction in sea ice because of global warming.
Nicken says that had he stepped in,it would only have deepened the situation.Instead,he filmed the bear’s slow, painful death and posted it to social media to serve as visual proof of the impact of climate change.“When scientists say bears are going extinct,I want people to realise what it looks like.Bears are going to starve to death,” said Nicken.“This is what a starving bear looks like.”
Polar bears are only native to the Arctic region and are one of the many casualties(伤亡) of climate change. They rely on the Arctic ice to hunt seals and are becoming increasingly threatened as the ice melts away.
The World Wildlife Fund(WWF) predicted back in 2002 that polar bears may face extinction for losing habitat. There are an estimated 25,000 bears left in the wild and most experts agree that unless climate change is controlled, they will all be dead within the next 100 years.“The simple truth is this—if the Earth continues to warm,we will lose bears and the entire polar ecosystem. This large male bear was not old,and he certainly died within hours or days in that situation,” Nicken wrote on Instagram. But there are solutions. We must begin putting the Earth—our home—first.
27.What can people see in the striking footage
A.A starving polar bear.
B.Some dying creature.
C.A crying photographer.
D.The reduction of sea water.
28.Why did Paul Nicken post the footage on social media
A.To raise people’s awareness of climate change.
B.To get a prize in photography competition.
C.To attract readers’ interest in bears.
D.To raise money for bear protection.
29.What do we know about the polar bears from the passage
A.The polar bears that are left can be found in Canada.
B.They were hunting seals when taken photos of.
C.The WWF has done a lot to protect them.
D.Melting ice is a huge threat to their life.
30.What can we learn from the last paragraph
A.The unknown diseases increased polar bears’ deaths.
B.The whole bear ecosystem will suffer a heavy loss.
C.The destruction of forest affected the ecosystem.
D.The polar bear will be extinct in this century.

第二节 概要写作(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
The word “ecosystem” is short for ecological system. An ecosystem is where living creatures expand within a given area. You can say that an ecosystem is the natural environment where biological organisms such as plants, animals and humans co-exist in this world. So naturally that includes you and me.Yes,we are all members of an ecosystem!
There are different kinds of ecosystems depending on the type of surface or environment. Most are naturally made such as the ocean or lake and the desert or rainforest. Some are man-made or artificial to encourage co-habitation(共居)between living and non-living things in a monitored environment, such as a zoo or garden.
Plants make up the biggest group of biological creatures within an ecosystem, and that’s because they are the natural food producers for everyone.Plants raised in the Earth need air and collect sunlight to help them grow. When they grow, the plants and their fruits or flowers eventually become a source of food to animals, microorganisms and even humans,of course.Food is then converted to energy for the rest of us to function, and this happens in a never-ending cycle until the living creatures die and break up back in the Earth.
Ecosystems are the basis of survival for all living things. We depend on plants and animals for food.In order for us to exist,we need to grow and care about other organisms. We also need to care for the non-living things within our environment like air and water so we can continue living as a population.Since plants, animals and humans are all of various species,we all play a role in maintaining the ecosystem.
To preserve our ecosystems,we should stop using too much energy, which happens when we consume more than our share of resources.Humans should not disturb the natural habitat of plants and animals, and allow them to grow healthily for the cycle to continue.Too many people in a habitat can mean displacement:imagine being thrown out of your home because there is no more space for everyone.Worse, overpopulation can also ruin the environment and cause destruction of existing plants and animals.

Dear fellow students,
Our school has started a programme of garbage classification.Different kinds of garbage are required to be sorted out and placed in different dustbins.Paper can be recycled, while leftovers can be collected as food for pigs or processed as fertilisers for plants.Above all, such harmful things as plastics and used batteries should not be mixed with other wastes.
The programme is of great benefit. Not only will we be able to save resources by making use of recyclable garbage, but harmful things will not pollute our environment after special treatment.
So let’s work together for a better campus!
