One Friday morning when Mr. Brown couldn't find one of his shoes, and Mrs. Brown couldn't see her face in the mirror, they decided it was time to get their house cleaned. So that afternoon Mrs. Brown called Marie, a foreign student who provided the house clean up service on weekends. She did a very good job and most families in Mrs. Brown's neighborhood were satisfied with her.
Marie came to the house the next morning and worked all day long. She first put all the dirty clothes into the washing machine. After sweeping the floor in the living room, she took a wet cloth to wipe the furniture(擦拭家具) until it was shining. In the kitchen, the floor was much dirtier. Marie got down on her hands and knees to clean it with a brush. Then she did the dishes and put them away.
After the clothes were dried, she ironed(熨) them, folded them up and put them away. Finally, she made the bed. When she finished, the house looked very clean and tidy. Then she took out the rubbish and left the house.
Mr. and Mrs. Brown came home from a trip that evening. There was no mess in the house. The floor and the furniture were clean. In their bedroom, all their clothes were tidy.

When Justin Tong was a child, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him do lots of housework such as taking out the rubbish and getting newspapers. But when he grew up, he was better off than his childhood friends and lived a happier and healthier life.
This was a 40 year study that followed the lives of 456 children in London. It showed that the children who had worked hard in childhood had a richer and happier future. “The children who worked in the home or neighborhood got ability and came to feel they were meaningful members of society,” said Daniel Brown, the psychologist(心理学家) who made the discovery(发现). “And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them. ”
Brown's study followed these children by interview at their age of 25,31 and 47. Under Brown, the researchers compared the children's mental health scores with their childhood activity scores. Children can get scores through part time jobs, housework, or effort in school and ability to deal with problems.
Working at any age is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and many other abilities. They also help him understand that people must work together for the same goal.
Yet work isn't everything. As Tolstoy once said, “One can live wonderfully in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one's work. ”

From the pie chart we can see that 16% of the students often help their parents with the housework, 24% sometimes do the housework and 60% never do it. The result shows that most of the students don't do housework.
I think it's good for middle school students to do some housework. First, doing some housework can make us independent. We can look after ourselves when our parents aren't at home. Second, we can share our parents' work by doing some housework. They will surely be happy if we say “Have a rest, and I'll do the housework. ” Last but not least, doing some housework can keep us healthy and strong. In fact, housework is a kind of physical exercise.
