Rivers are one of our most important resources(资源). Many of the world's great cities are located near rivers, and almost every country has at least one river flowing through it that plays an important part in the lives of its people.
Since the beginning of history, people have used rivers for transportation. The longest one in the United States is the Mississippi. The lifeline of Egypt is the Nile. To the people in India, the Ganges is great, but it is also important for transportation; ships can travel along it for a thousand miles. Other great rivers are the Congo in Africa and the Mekong in Southeast Asia. The greatest river of all for navigation(航海), however, is the Amazon in Brazil(巴西). It is so wide and so deep that large ships can go about two thousand miles upon it.
Besides transportation, rivers give food to eat, water to drink, water for crops, and chances for fun and recreation for people who live along their banks. In order to increase the supply of water for crops, engineers sometimes build a dam across a river and let a lake form behind the dam. Then people can use the water not only to water their fields but also to make electricity for their homes and industries. However, large cities and industries that are located near rivers often make problems. As the cities grow in size and industries increase in number, the water in the rivers becomes polluted with waste. People are learning the importance, and taking action to stop the pollution. People should do more to keep rivers clean if they want to make good use of this natural resource.

Have you heard of dodos(渡渡鸟) The dodo was a kind of bird that was very large. You might not think it was a bird at all because the dodo could not fly. It was a member of the chicken family. It lived happily and safely until people arrived. European sailors found those birds in the 16th century on Mauritius Island in the Indian Ocean.
When the sailors found the strange birds that could not fly, they were surprised. The Europeans on Mauritius Island and the pigs they brought with them found the birds very delicious. So large numbers of dodos were killed and no living dodos were found on the island in the following years. Later, the samples of some dodos were brought to England in the 17th century for the future study.
In fact, the extinction of dodos was caused by people. This was how the phrase “as dead as a dodo” came. It teaches us a big lesson. It is Sunday. I took part in the “Environment Protector” activity with my classmates today. In the morning, we rode our bikes and arrived at the People's Park at 8: 00. When we got there, we found that some boys were climbing the trees and the ground and public walls were really dirty, which made us all so sad. So we began to do our jobs. Firstly, we picked up the rubbish and cleaned up the public walls together. After that, we planted some young trees in the park. All of us worked so hard. Dear classmates,
Elephants are the largest mammals on land. They can live as long as 80 years old. However, these days the number of elephants is becoming much smaller. Because people cut down forests, they are losing their homes. Also, people kill them for their ivory. Elephants are in great danger. I think we should try our best to protect them. First, we should help make rules to stop people from killing elephants. Second, we shouldn't cut down trees. Third, we shouldn't buy anything made of ivory.
I believe everyone's contribution can make a big difference.
