Why are certain people so memorable, while some fade from our memories in time
Several examples come to mind with my youngest son.He was always more comfortable around his dad’s friends than his own.He loved to spend time with them, fish with them, listen to their stories and just be with them.
He has experienced the loss of several really meaningful friendships over the past few years, and it has been very painful for him.One,Dr.George,was a neighbour and fishing buddy who would call to see if Ken could go fishing with him.Dr.George always said Ken was the son he never had and that it meant everything to him.He died very suddenly while fishing with all of his best buddies a few years ago.The huge hole that left in so many lives simply cannot be filled—for Ken it was immensely painful.
There was another fishing buddy of his dad’s,Frank, who was always fun to be around.Ken was very young then, but really enjoyed getting along with “the guys” when they were fishing.Frank and his family went to the Keys in the same week we did one year and the memory remains to this day.Cheerful and happy,he was able to laugh at himself and accept everyone’s abilities or lack of them, all qualities that impressed Ken so much.
When he became deadly ill,Ken drove from his home in North Carolina to Florida for an overnight visit with him.He died a short time later. The day after his funeral (葬礼),Frank came to Ken in a dream and asked if he would take care of his wife,Carol. To Ken this was very meaningful, and today they share a special bond that Frank somehow knew would be important for them both.
When you are raising children, you realise that some people become very important to them, draw them in,accept and respect them.It changes them.

Mirroring body language is a way to bond and to build understanding. It is a powerful tool that we use without even knowing it.
The most obvious forms of mirroring are yawning and smiling. When you see someone yawn, you are likely to yawn immediately.Smiling is also pretty contagious—seeing a smiling person makes you want to smile too.
Mirroring body language is a nonverbal way to say “I am like you.I feel the same.”Research shows that people who experience the same feelings are likely to trust, understand and accept each other.
Women have the natural ability to pick up and understand body signals. Therefore,it is not surprising that a woman is more likely to mirror another woman than a man is to mirror another man. That’s why women are regarded as better talkers, even if they might not really have more close friends.
It is interesting that when a man tries to mirror a woman’s body language while she is talking,he may seem to regard her as caring, intelligent and attractive.
Mirroring body language is an excellent way to build trust and understanding quickly. If you want to set up a connection with a new person, mirror his or her gestures, sitting position, tone of voice and talking pace. This will make them feel that there is something about you that they like.
While mirroring body language gains you acceptance, you still need to take into consideration your relationship with the person you are mirroring. If you are in a lower social position and are mirroring the body language of your boss,he will view you as arrogant. However,if you want to defeat those who are trying to prove superior to you, mirroring their body language will help defeat them and change their position.

“Well,” concluded Socrates,“if what you want to tell me is neither true nor good nor even useful, why tell it to me at all ”

If your friendships are going to last a long time, you simply have to accept that things will always change. But never fear. 36 Here is a little of their advice.
Start with the friendship triangle.
Shasta Nelson is a friendship expert who gives a concept called the “friendship triangle”. 37 Anyway, the base is positivity, and two sides of the triangle are consistency (一致性) and vulnerability (脆弱性).If your friendship has something wrong,it’s much easier to see what is off balance and adjust in time.
Figure out what you value.
Another helpful tool comes from Rachel Wilkerson Miller.Wilkerson Miller recommends looking at friendships through your TME — time, money and energy.“Those are your most valuable resources,” she says.“Think about where your TME is going, how you’re spending it and who you’re giving it to.” 38
Don’t be afraid to ask for things.
39 Being direct can feel awkward, but if you get in the habit of stating your needs, you can avoid a pile of hate much later on.“Ask for exactly what you need,”Havrilesky,a famous writer, says,“sometimes it can work like medicine. So ask!”
40 During long life, you go through a lot of different versions of yourself. That can mean that sometimes,a friend is only present for a certain chapter—and that is OK.
A.Not every friend is going to be there forever.
B.We offer some advice from experts to help you deal with the shifts in your friendship.
C.Friendship is like a ship to carry you further.
D.The friendship triangle is made of three equally long sides.
E.If you waste these resources,it might be time to shift the relationship.
F.You should get comfortable asking for what you need.
G.The expert recommends being clear when your friendship is no longer the same.

Good friendships seem to be especially helpful for the heart.A three-year Swedish study of more than 13,600 men and women found that having few or no close friends increased the risk of having a heart attack by about 50 percent.A two-year study of more than 500 women with suspected coronary artery(冠状动脉) disease showed similar results.Women who reported the lowest levels of social support were twice as likely to die during the study. The women who enjoyed close support were not only more likely to be alive after two years, they also had lower rates of high blood pressure and were less likely to have excessive fat.
As reported in the Journal of the National Medical Association, friendships and other types of social support can help relieve stress,a well-known contributor to heart disease.Among other things, stress can encourage inflammation (炎症) in arteries. The research is still not very mature, but some studies have found that people who enjoy close support from friends and family generally have fewer inflammatory chemicals in their blood. The link between social ties and inflammation seems to be especially marked in older people.
When stress does appear, friends can encourage healthy reactions.People who lack strong social support tend to have dramatic and potentially dangerous reactions to scary situations.Their hearts pound and their blood pressure soars. But friends can help keep the heart on a more even keel.A study published in the Annals of Behavioral Medicine found that young men and women discussing rough patches in their lives had a lower pulse and blood pressure when they had a supportive friend at their side.
Finally, friendships may help encourage a heart-healthy lifestyle. As reported in Current Opinion in Psychiatry, people are more likely to eat fruit and vegetables, exercise regularly and quit smoking if they have a network of friends and family.

White Jacques has been my close friend for two years.I first met him on a school exchange trip to Calais,France and we’ve been friends ever since.
Jacques is quite good-looking.He’s tall and slim, with olive skin and curly dark hair.Like many French people,he always looks well-dressed even in casual clothes. He is always friendly and loves to have fun. However,he can be a bit immature at times. For example, when he doesn’t get what he wants,he acts childishly.Jacques is so keen on water sports that he spends a lot of time on his boat.
It’s a pleasure to be with him and I really enjoy his company.
