同位语从句
一、教学设计
【教学目的】
1. Students will correctly use conjunctions in appositive clauses.
2. Students will tell the differences between the appositive clause and the attributive clause.
【教学流程】
Step 1 Definition
In this class, we are going to learn something about the appositive clause. First, we need to know what is called an appositive. Let’s look at a sentence.
e.g. The boy, Tom, is our monitor.
同位语:解释说明前面的名词,同等地位,同等作用
When we use a noun clause as an appositive, we get an appositive clause.
e.g. We heard the news that our team had won.
同位语从句
Can you find the sentences with appositive clauses from the reading passage A TRIP ON “THE TRUE NORTH” Now,please pause the video for 3 minutes as you read.
From the passage, you may find the following sentences:
①The thought that they could cross the whole continent was exciting.
②Some people have the idea that you can cross Canada in less than five days, but they forget the fact that Canada is 5,500 kilometres from coast to coast.
③The girls were surprised at the fact that ocean ships can sail up the Great Lakes.
Step 2 Common antecedents
What are the common antecedents that lead appositive clauses
e.g. 1. I have no idea when Chaplin’s film will be on again.
2. We were very excited at the news that our team had won.
3. The fact that women can work as well as men is clear.
4. Henry Adams made a promise that he would not open the letter until 2 o’clock.
Common antecedents include: thought, fact, idea, reason, problem, order, doubt, news, word(消息), hope, truth, wish, promise, belief, advice, suggestion, possibility, decision, etc.
Step 3 Conjunctions
What about the conjunctions in appositive clauses Have a close look at the following clauses. What can you find
that our football team won the game.
whether it’ll rain tomorrow.
whose book this is.
who can finish the work.
whom they are talking about.
e.g. I have no idea which pen is mine.
what we should do next.
why it happened.
how he can get the treasure.
when he will be back.
where the concert will be held.
Tip1: 如果同位语从句意义完整,用that连接; that在从句中不充当成分,不能省略。
Tip2: 如果同位语从句不完整,需用“是否”的含义,只用whether引导,不用if。
Tip3: 如果同位语从句意义不完整,需加“什么”“哪个”“谁”等连接代词,需用what ,which, who等在从句中充当成分。
Tip4: 如果同位语从句意义不完整,需增加“什么时候”,“什么地点”,“什么原因”,“什么方式”,需用when, where, why ,how 引导同位语从句。
Step 4 The differences between the appositive clause and the attributive clause
Lots of students find it difficult to make a distinction between the appositive clause and the attributive clause. Let’s compare the following two sentences.
The suggestion that we discuss the problem all over again is a good one.
同位语从句
The suggestion that he gave at the meeting was a good one.
定语从句
区别:
1、 同位语从句是对前面的名词作进一步解释、说明它是什么、是谁;that不充当句子成份。
2、 定语从句是修饰前面的先行词;that在句中充当主语或宾语,有实际意义。
Tell the function of the clauses in the following sentences说出下列从句的功能:A: Appositive(同位语); B: Attributive(定语). Please pause the video for 1 minute to make your judgment.
1.His plan that we go there on foot is acceptable. (A)
2.Many teachers hold the view that teenagers should not spend too much time online. (A)
3.The first request that he made was to ask for freedom. (B)
4. He made an excuse that his car broke down on the way. (A)
5. Is this the company where your father works (B)
6. This is the reason that he gave for his absence. (B)
Step 5 Practice
Now it’s time to put we have learned into practice. Please write the appositive clauses according to the Chinese given. You may pause the video for 3 minutes.
我不知道怎样到达火车站。
I have no idea how I can get to the railway station.
我们队取得决赛胜利的消息令人鼓舞。
The news that our team has won the final match is encouraging.
人们曾认为地球是宇宙的中心。
People used to hold the opinion that the earth was the center of the universe.
没有人对他将成为他们的老板这一事实感到高兴。
No one is happy with the fact that he will become their boss.
我们何时开始工作的问题尚未决定。
The question when we will start the work is not decided.
