Dear Dr. Frost,
I’m writing on behalf of my class to sincerely invite you to deliver a online lecture concerning students’ health issues between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. next Friday.
We would appreciate it if you could lecture on relevant approaches to improving our physical and psychological health, especially as many of us are too thin due to hard efforts in study as well as suffering from inadequate sleep and exercise, bad eating habits, and feeling stressed out before exams.
It’ll be our great honor to benefit from your knowledge in health care. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
Paragraph 1
“But your money is not enough!” said the shop assistant. “Even for the smallest bunch?” Bruce asked with great anxiety, not believing his ears. “I am sorry. But no.” the shop assistant answered sympathetically. Seeing their eagerness, she clarified patiently it was the latest tendency that carnations were the most expensive flowers because Mother's Day was approaching. Upon hearing this, Bruce and Alina lowered their heads, feeling hopeless, tears welling up in their eyes. Bruce had no choice but to put the money back into his pocket. Ultimately, they slowly turned around, looking back from time to time, reluctant to leave.
Paragraph 2
“Wait a moment, please!” another gentleman waved to them. “Actually I've got some on sale, but a little smaller. Would you like to have a look Only 2 dollars!” Bruce nodded with delight at once. The gentleman smiled, “Just a minute!” He went to the back and came out with a bunch, big and pretty. Obviously, he was merely offering help. The children were so moved that they nearly choked. “Thank you!” with tears down their cheeks, they said in a trembling tone, bowed to the gentleman and hurried back. They couldn't wait! Thanks to the kindness from the complete stranger, the young children realized their dream of showing love and appreciation to their mom.十堰市城区普高协作体 2021-2022学年第一学期期中考试试题

We have two daughters: Kristen is seven years old and Kelly is four. Last Sunday evening,
3
we invited some people home for dinner. I dressed them nicely for the party, and told them that
their job was to join Mommy in answering the door when the bell rang. Mommy would introduce
them to the guests, and then they would take the guests’ coats upstairs and put them on the bed in
the second bedroom.
The guests arrived. I introduced my two daughters to each of them. The adults were nice and
kind and said how lucky we were to have such good kids.
Each of the guests made a particular fuss over (对…关爱倍至)Kelly, the younger one,
admiring her dress, her hair and her smiles. They said she was an unusual girl to be carrying coats
upstairs at her age.
I thought to myself that we adults usually make a big “to do” over the younger one because
she’s the one who seems more easily hurt. We do it with the best of intentions (意图).
But we seldom think of how it might affect (影响) the other child. I was a little worried that
Kristen would feel she was ignored. I was about to serve dinner when I realized that she had been
missing for twenty minutes. I ran upstairs and found her in the bedroom, crying.
I said, “What are you doing, my dear ”
She turned to me with a sad expression and said, “Mommy, why don’t people like me the
way they like my sister Is it because I’m not pretty Is that why they don’t say nice things about
me as much ”
I tried to explain to her, kissing her to make her feel better.
Now, whenever I visit a friend’s home, I make it a point to speak to the elder child first.
24. The underlined expression “make a big ‘to do’ over” (in paragraph 4) means _______.
A. show much concern about B. have a special effect on
C. list jobs to be done for D. do good things for
25. The guests praised Kelly for carrying coats upstairs for her _______.
A. pretty clothes B. lovely smile C. young age D. beautiful hair
26. Kristen felt sad and cried because ______.
A. the guests gave her more coats to carry
B. the guests praised her sister more than her
C. her mother didn’t introduce her to the guests
D. she didn’t look as pretty as Kelly
27. We can conclude from the passage that _______.
A. parents should pay more attention to the elder children
B. the younger children are usually more easily hurt
C. people usually like the younger children more
D. adults should treat children equally

C
She’s one of the most popular children’s book authors. There are very few other writers who
can create such magic with their stories. One other such author is J. K. Rowling. But it all started
with Enid Blyton, the English writer.
This woman was really a genius (天才), and knew the way to a child’s heart. Many children’s
love for reading began with her. She wrote mysteries about boarding school adventures, and there
was always something to learn at the end of the story. “Don’t be greedy (贪婪的)” or “It’s good to
be kind” or “Be kind to animals” or “Being too naughty will only land you in trouble”. There was
always something that kids need to apprehend at a young age.
And she showed all these in the sweetest, most kindly way possible. Everything turned out to
be okay in the end and the bad guys got what they deserved (应得的), but nothing too hard. And
they became good people in the end. If only the real world was this simple. She’s written books
about kids solving problems in the world filled with gods and fairies (仙女) where everyone was
good and kind, and lived with enough chocolates and other delicious foods. This world is just
what people want.
Do you know the kids’ show that is popular on Pogo Yeah, Enid Blyton created these
characters. The series is based on her books. These are just a few. She’s created hundreds and
hundreds of characters and more than 400 million copies of her children’s books have been sold
worldwide.
Children are crazy about her books and parents and schools are certainly going to make them
read her books. They’re perfect for kids. Enid Blyton is the reason why I developed such a love
for writing stories! She had such a wonderful imagination and knew exactly how to steal a child’s
heart. She stole mine.
28. Why did Enid Blyton win the author’s praise
A. She cared for children very much.
B. She could make children love reading.
C. She is more popular than J. K. Rowling.
D. She cared more about works than wealth.
29. What does the underlined word “apprehend” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Understand. B. Enjoy. C. Seek. D. Spread.
30. What’s Paragraph 3 mainly about
A. Enid Blyton’s achievement.
B. Enid Blyton’s writing skills.
C. What is in Enid Blyton’s books.
D. What Enid Blyton’s favourite characters are.
5
31. What can we guess about the author from the last paragraph
A. She often tells her children Enid Blyton’s stories.
B. She began to create stories because of Enid Blyton.
C. She suggests teaching Enid Blyton’s stories at school.
D. She hopes to live a life just as Enid Blyton wrote.
D
Americans use many expressions with the word "dog". People in the United States love their
dogs and treat them well. They take their dogs for walks, let them play outside and give them good
food and medical care. However, dogs without owners to care for them lead a different kind of life.
The expression, to lead a dog's life, describes a person who has an unhappy existence.
Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world. That means many people are competing for
the same things, like good jobs. They say that to be successful, a person has to work like a dog.
This means they have to work very, very hard. Such hard work can make people dog-tired. And,
the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog.
Still, people say every dog has its day. This means that every person enjoys a successful
period during his or her life. To be successful, people often have to learn new skills. Yet, some
people say that you can never teach an old dog new tricks. They believe that older people do not
like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things.
Some people are compared to dogs in bad ways. People who are unkind or uncaring can be
described as meaner (更吝啬的)than a junkyard dog. Junkyard dogs live in places where people
throw away things they do not want. Mean dogs are often used to guard this property. They bark
or attack people who try to enter the property. However, sometimes a person who appears to be
mean and threatening is really not so bad. We say his bark is worse than his bite.
Dog expressions also are used to describe the weather. The dog days of summer are the
hottest days of the year. A rainstorm may cool the weather. But we do not want it to rain too hard.
We do not want it to rain cats and dogs.
32. What does the passage mainly talk about
A. How to live with the dog.
B. Expressions related to the word "dog".
C. Americans ' love to the dog.
D. Dog expressions with the weather.
33. Working too hard can result in ________.
A. leading a dog’s life B. becoming sick as a dog
C. living in a dog-eat-dog world D. working like a dog
34. What can we learn from the passage
6
A. Everyone can be successful if he learns from the old.
B. It might be difficult for the young to learn new skills.
C. Junkyard dogs are not careful in money arrangement.
D. Mean dogs aren’t so awful as their appearance in fact.
35. To support his / her idea, the author develops the passage mainly by ________.
A. listing reasons B. using quotations
C. making comparisons D. giving examples

Have you ever found yourself saying “I’ll never do that again”, only to find yourself doing the
exact same thing just a short time later 36 It seems all of us have repeated some of our
mistakes at one time or another. The good news is that you can take steps to learn from your
mistakes.
Admit your mistakes.
Don’t blame (责备) anyone or anything else. Don’t try to hide your mistake or pretend it didn’t
happen. Admitting (承认) mistakes does not make you look weak. 37 When you admit
mistakes, you help develop a culture of open communication and a willingness to improve by
showing that you want to learn from the mistake.
Ask yourself questions.
Even though you don’t want to face your mistakes, thinking about them carefully can be helpful.
Ask yourself a few questions. What went wrong What could I do better next time What did I
learn from this 38 Seeing your answers on paper can help you think more logically about
your experience.
Make a plan.
Keeping feeling sorry for your mistakes won’t help you. 39 Make a plan that will help
you avoid making a similar mistake. Be as detailed as possible but remain flexible (灵活的) since
your plan may need to be changed.
40
Sometimes people will point out your mistakes. Find someone who is wise and dependable and
who is willing to listen to your explanations of what you’ve tried so far. If you can ask for advice

With time going by, Mother’s Day was around the corner. Maybe it is the happiest day for
every mother. Bruce, a boy of nine years old, with his little sister Alina. six years old, wanted to
buy their mother carnations(康乃馨). But they were too young to get a job, even if a part-time one.
What could they do There was only one week left. They felt sad whenever they thought their
mother would spend her Mother’s Day without carnations.
Money is hard to make. Buying a bunch of carnations would cost a large sum of money for
9
them. One day when they were wandering at the street, they heard Mr Green was complaining that
he had no time to wash those soda pop bottles. It is a kind of soda pop sold in bottles and the
bottles can be washed and filled again. Mr Green ran that grocery shop by himself, so he had no
time to wash them. "Would you like to try, Alina " Bruce asked his sister suddenly. Alina
nodded her head without hesitation. After all, both of them knew that maybe it was an opportunity
for them to make money for the flowers.
They walked a few steps and came near Mr Green. They looked up at Mr Green and asked
whether they could help him to wash those bottles. Mr Green looked at them curiously until he
was told the reason. He agreed and promised that he would pay 0.1 dollar for every bottle. Bruce
and Alina were very happy even though they knew they would have a busy week.
They came to Mr Green’s shop in the next seven days when they came back from school. On
the morning of Mother’s Day, they got the pay ——6.1 dollars. The boy also had 0.3 dollar saved.
So with a total of 6.4 dollars they walked about a mile to where a flower shop was located.
When they came inside, someone asked what they wanted. They told him they wanted to buy
some carnations for their mother. The boy reached into his pocket and pulled out their cash, asking
if that would be enough.
