I was the “I can’t” child-- the poster child for the word “can’t.” Whatever my mother told or asked me to do was always followed by my words, “I caaaan’t.” Very few tasks or goals that I set out to do were ever completed.
“I want you to read this article,” Mother began. “It’s about Marlo Thomas. She tells how a simple poem that she was forced to learn by her father changed her life. She went from saying ‘I can’t’ to ‘I can!’ According to this article, she was able to change her life, and her career, by learning the lessons in the poem.”
I thought it must be great to be Marlo! Beside her photo was the poem my mother had spoken of, a simple poem entitled “I Can.”
“I want you to memorize that poem,” Mother said firmly.
“Mamaaaaa,” I complained. “I can’t learn that poem. It’s too loooong.”
“It’s not too long and yes, you can learn it. I want you to know it perfectly by this time tomorrow.”
I dropped my shoulders, turned and made my way back to my bedroom with the magazine in my small right hand. With a heavy heart, I lay on my bed, fell back against the cotton and began my task.
“‘can’t’ is a word that is the enemy of ambition,” I began. I repeated the line. I repeated it again and again until it firmly stamped in my heart. “An enemy waiting to jump on your strength of will ...” I continued until the following evening, when I proudly recited the poem that has continued to be my motto. Ms. Thomas did not know me, but her story forever changed my life.
Saying “I can” helped me to survive the worst moments of my life. Saying “I can” helped me to do things I would otherwise have thought out of my reach. A simple poem learned at seven is a poem that will sustain me to seventy-seven. Maybe even longer.

In ancient Greek mythology, we learn about a young man named Narcissus. He was so beautiful that he fell in love with his own reflection. But soon he realized that what he loved was not real. As a result he became sad and died. In the place where he had stood appeared a yellow flower - a narcissus.
This is where the word “narcissism” came from. Unfortunately, narcissism is often used negatively - it is usually used to mean being self-centered and not caring about others.
However, part of the reason that narcissism carries these negative meanings is that many people admire themselves in an unhealthy way. But the truth is that good self-love is necessary for our mental health, scientists say.
A study published 10 years ago shows that low self-esteem is responsible for many social problems, and it can affect teenagers seriously. When they feel less confident and not as good as their classmates, teenagers are more likely to suffer from depression, according to the BBC.
The other reason that narcissism is considered an ugly thing is because we are taught that we should care more about others than ourselves and that it’s better to give than to receive.
Thinking about others is the right thing to do, without question. But psychologists say that the love of others is actually based on self-love --if you see yourself as an unpleasant stranger, how can you make friends with anyone else After all, you are closer to yourself than anyone else. You can’t love another until you love yourself, and you can’t expect someone to love you if you don’t love yourself.
If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge, it is time to build a positive self- image and learn to love yourself. You’ll be surprised how nice it can be!
The best way to defeat a negative self-image is to step back and build your pride. Make a list if you need to, but record all of the great things you do every day. Think about how you are always there for your friends; how you help your classmates with their homework; how you manage to get good grades.
If you think you’re weak because you can’t finish a 1,500 m run, get to the track and practice. If you think you’re dull because you are not in fashion, buy a few new clothes. But remember, just because you think it, it doesn’t mean it’s true.
The next time you look in the mirror, try to tell yourself that you are one of a kind. Pick out your best qualities and be proud of yourself.
61. Why does narcissism often have a negative meaning
A. In ancient Greek mythology, Narcissus’s story is sad.
B. Narcissism is a habit in which people unhealthily admire themselves.
C. Narcissism is responsible for many social problems.
D. Narcissism harms one’s mental health.
62. What social problem is caused by low self-esteem
A. Teenagers’ physical and mental health is negatively affected.
B. Teenagers who don’t like themselves are often ignored by teachers.
C. Teenagers are more likely to suffer from depression.
D. Teenagers often feel that they could have done better.
63. What is the relationship between the love of others and self-love
A. People cannot love themselves without loving others.
B. To love others is the right thing to do, while self-love is not.
C. Self-love is the basis of love for others.
D. To love yourself depends on whether others love you.
64. What does the word “it” refer to in the 9th paragraph
A. You can’t finish a 1,500 meter run. B. You are not in style.
C. You are weak or dull. D. You have a negative self-image.
65. What is the main purpose of this text
A. To persuade people to stop being narcissistic.
B. To suggest that parents care about children’s self-image.
C. To advise people to look in the mirror and like themselves.
D. To encourage people to accept and love themselves.
D
Shakespeare wrote in his great play Hamlet, “Brevity(简洁) is the soul of wit.” But it seems that not everyone agrees with this. Microblog has canceled its 140-character limit for posts, meaning users can now write as many words as they like. And now Twitter, a US social media site that’s similar to Microblog, also announced that it plans to double its character limit from 140 to 280.
Twitter has its reasons for the changes. It’s a pain to have to edit your thoughts to less than 140 characters when you have so much to say. And a big problem for English writers is that it requires more space than character-based languages such as Chinese to express the same thing. According to The Atlantic, while the average English-language tweet is 34 characters, a Japanese one, for example, is only 15.
But still, Twitter users don’t seem to be happy with the new move.
Our reading habits have changed over time, and we’re used to keeping up to date with what’s happening in the world by reading just a couple of lines of text. For this, 140 characters are more than enough.
“[Microblogs] are almost always faster and more efficient than television, radio, newspapers, or any other source,” wrote Dom Knight, a reporter for The Guardian. “It’s like gathering in the town square ... in an instant.”
Trying to fit your thoughts into a limited space is also a good way to come up with smart comments, which is why microblogs are often where the best humor is found.
For example, during former US President Donald Trump’s election campaign in 2016, a Twitter user wrote: “If Trump can seriously win the presidency of this nation, I don’t want to see a job description with ‘experience required’ ever again.” And another wrote: “England: Nothing can be more embarrassing than Brexit. America: Watch this.” These tweets expressed people’s upset louder and quicker than any long articles ever could.
So perhaps we should pay attention to Shakespeare’s words. After all, he only needed 27 characters to make his famous point.
66. Why does Twitter plan to change its character limit for each post
A. Twitter users always have a lot to say.
B. Users are not satisfied with the current character limit.
C. More characters are needed when writing in English than in Chinese.
D. Twitter saw that the benefit after Microblog changed the character limit.
67. What does “this” refer to in the 4th paragraph
A. People want to know what is happening around the world.
B. People prefer to look through short posts rather than read long articles.
C. People are used to reading short posts in order to get the latest news.
D. People’s new reading habits make it hard to read long posts.
68. What is the advantage of Microblog according to Dom Knight
A. People can get information which they cannot get from traditional media.
B. It can quickly gather various pieces of information for people.
C. It can make people feel as if they are there and experiencing an event themselves.
D. The posts can be easily understood because the characters in each post are limited.
69. Why does the author write about the two Twitter posts
A. To show that the US presidential election attracted more attention than Brexit.
B. To explain how British people and Americans show their sense of humor.
C. To prove that Twitter is a platform where you can express your own opinions freely.
D. To offer evidence that limited characters can inspire smart posts.
70. What is the author’s attitude toward the character limit on social media
A. It should be lifted because it makes it difficult for people to express thoughts.
B. It should be abandoned because it doesn’t fit people’s current reading habits.
C. It should be kept as Shakespeare argued that using fewer words is better.
D. It is meaningful because short texts fit people’s reading habits and help create the best humor.

Kevin Randall, a biology teacher at Grandville High School, runs the environmental club at the high school, which has around 2,000 students. The club is known as the GHS Green Team, and it aims to raise awareness among students. It also works on projects to reduce the environmental footprint of the building itself.
One of the club’s recent projects focused on reducing waste in the school cafeteria. Randall said their cafeteria supervisor told them that the school went through 54,000 plastic forks every year. The club applied for a financial help, built recycling centers for the cafeteria, and purchased metal silverware.
And now every student uses a durable metal for kora spoon instead of disposables(一次性用品) , “and that’s just one way we’re trying to capture the low-hanging fruit, if you will,” Randall said.
The efforts of Randall and his students have earned Grandville High School the Michigan Green School certification from the state. In addition to their work reducing waste in the cafeteria, the GHS Green Team has also built a garden with flowers and vegetables on campus, and leads cleanups on site and out in the community. Over the years, Randall and his students have also been working on raising money to install solar panels(太阳能板) on the roof of the high school.
Randall said he was motivated to take the lead on environmental issues for his school because he wanted his students to have someone to turn to in the building who understands what’s at stake(利害攸关) when it comes to climate change.
“And I also felt like I needed to do more in my life for my own two children at home,” Randall added, “They need to know that their dad is working as hard as she can to reduce the effects of climate change, and to spread the word, and to make sure that other students out there are leaning about this just the way they are at home.”

Dear Chris,
Good news for you! Traditional Chinese Culture Exhibition is due to be held in the City Museum from 11 December to 25 December. A wide range of Chinese art forms will be presented, varying from embroidery to calligraphy. Since you’re intrigued by the Chinese paper cutting recently, I sincerely invite you to the exhibition.
As you know, paper cutting is the perfect combination of designing, paining and skills. With the diverse colors and the varied shapes, it enjoys both practical value and appreciation value. In the exhibition, some famous artists and even experts will cut the paper on the spot, and with their help and guidance, you can give it a try in person to make images out of paper. Apart from that, we can also make some friends with the same interest who may help us have a deeper insight into the traditional Chinese culture.
I’m sure it’ll be an unforgettable and rewarding experience. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Jin
