I. Background information
The topic of this unit is sports. In this lesson, students will know a football player called Li Hua from Simon’s introduction.

1. read the passage about Simon’s favourite football player fluently;
2. guess the meanings of the new words from the context;
3. identify the main idea of each paragraph in the passage by skimming;
4. describe Li Hua’s personal information and hobbies by detailed reading;
5. learn to be a good listener and respond to the teacher’s instructions actively.

2. New structure: He comes from Guangdong.

Step 1 Lead-in
1. The topic of reading–favourite football player
Free talk (open questions):
What’s your favourite sport
Who is your favourite sports star
2. New words:
(1) Guess what the article is about from the title and the two pictures in Ss’ Books.
T: Today, we will learn an article. What’s the name of the article Can you find two pictures Guess what the article is about and what you may find from the article.
(2) Students read the article by themselves and underline the words they don’t understand.
T: For example, when I read the article, if I don’t understand this word, I underline it. (The teacher gives an example first.)
(3) Pair work: Talk with your partner about the new words. Help each other get the meanings of the new words.
(4) Ask the teacher for help.
T: If you still can’t understand some words, you can ask me. I am ready to help you.

(1) The first reading: for specific information (scanning)
Simon wrote the article. Please read it quickly and tell me:

(2) The second reading: for general information (skimming)
a. Listen to the tape and read after it sentence by sentence.
T: Do you want to know more about Li Hua Let’s listen to the tape and read after the tape. Pay attention to the main idea of each paragraph. So, how many paragraphs are there Paragraph 1 is from line 1 to line 2. (The teacher shows students what the paragraph is.)
b. Choose the main idea of each paragraph. (Part B1)

(3) The third reading: for further understanding
a. Boys and girls read Paragraphs 1 and 2.
