It作形式主语
当动词不定式、动名词、从句等复杂成分用作句子主语时，为保持平衡，通常把真正的主语放在句末，而在句首使用形式主语it。
(1) It代替动词不定式，作形式主语
形式：It + be+ adj. +(for/of sb.) to do sth.
Eg: It’s illegal (for a person) to drive a car without a license.
It’s kind of you to help me solve the problem.
注意：for/of的区别
for前形容词通常描述事物，如easy, difficult, hard, (un)necessary, (im)possible, (un)likely, right, wrong, (un)important, (il)legal, well-mannered, ill-mannered, (im)polite, clear, obvious, certain, suitable, proper, fit, useful, useless, dangerous…
of前形容词通常描述人的性格、品质、特征等，如kind, unkind, nice, rude, cruel, considerate, thoughtful, thoughtless, careful, careless, silly, foolish, stupid, clever, wise, crazy…
(2)It代替动名词，作形式主语
形式：It’s no good/use doing sth.
It’s (well) worth doing sth.
It’s (well) worthwhile doing sth./to do sth.
It’s (well) worth one’s while doing sth.
Eg: It’s no use crying over spilt water.(覆水难收)

(3) It代替主语从句，作形式主语
1)It is +n. +that 从句
n.=a pity/a shame/an honor/ a good thing/a fact/ a surprise/a common knowledge…
Eg: It is no secret that the president wants to have a second term at office.
2) It+ is+ adj. +that从句
adj.=clear/obvious/important/obvious/true/possible/certain…
Eg: It is certain that the house need to be rebuilt.
3) It +is+ v.-ed+ that从句
v.ed=said/reported/learned/believed/thought/known/told/hoped/expected/agreed/accepted/decided/determined/intended/planned/understood…
Eg:It is said that the couple have gotten divorced.
=The couple are said to have gotten divorced.
4)It +vi. + that从句
vi.=appears/happens/occurs to me that…
Eg:It appears that you are all mistaken。
注意：
表惊奇、不相信、出乎意料、惋惜、理应如此、请求、建议、命令等语气，从句谓语动词要用虚拟语气“(should) +do”
It is necessary (important, natural, strange, surprising, a pity, a shame, suggested (requested, required, ordered, demanded, advised, insisted, commanded, recommend, proposed, desired ...) that（should）…

当不定式、动名词、从句等复杂成分用作宾语且其后跟有宾语补足语时，通常会在宾语补足语前使用形式宾语it，而将真正的宾语移至句末。
It作形式宾语
基本形式：动词+it+宾补（adj./n.）+不定式/动名词/从句
常用v.: think，believe, make, find, consider, feel，suppose, keep…
常用adj.: hard, useless, important, necessary, natural, essential…
常用n.短语：no use/no good/ a waste of time/ our duty…
(1)v.+it+adj. /n.(for/of sb.) to do/that
Eg: I think it hard for you to do the task on your own.
I think it hard that you'll do the task on your own
(2)v.+it+adj./n.(one’s)doing
(adj.=useless/worth/worthwhile..)(n.=no use/no good/worth one's while/a waste of time/money/energy/words)
Eg: I'll make it worth your while telling me about his secret.
(3)v.+it+important/unimportant/necessary/unnecessary/natural/essential/of much/of great/of no/ of little importance that(should)…
Eg:I think it important that you(should)attend the conference.
(4)v.+ it+ as+ noun/adj. clause (verb=accept, regard, take, see, view)
Eg:The lecturer takes it as encouraging when so many students attend his lecture.
(5)v.(have, take, put, like) +it+ that…
Eg: Rumor has it that the school master will soon resign.
(6)表好恶v.（enjoy, like, love, appreciate, prefer，be fond of, dislike, resent, hate…）+ /if/when…
Eg: We really appreciate it when she offered to help.
(7)v. +prep.+it+that…（except that除外）
v.+prep.: see to, look to, insist on, stick to, depend on, rely on, answer for..
Eg: See to it that you are not late again.
(8)v.+it+介词短语+that…
take it for granted, owe it to sb., bring it to sb’s attention, leave it to sb,keep it in mind.…
Eg:I took it for granted that he would help us.
