Ted, my little brother, is in Grade One. Last Friday he came back from school with a letter. The letter was from his teacher. ‘I got a red flower today. Could you please sign this note ’ he said to Mum. The note showed that he had been talking in class.
Ted hardly gets top scores in his school work. The best he gets is ‘OK’, but often he gets "You can do better than this." Mum knows what it means. She tells me ‘You can do better than this’ means ‘quite bad’ in China.
In the USA, teachers never say anything too bad about their students, even if the students are making trouble in class or not working hard enough. The worst they might say is ‘Please be nicer tomorrow’. Many parents are satisfied with a B grade for each subject.
But things in Chinese schools are quite different. Parents have high expectations for their children. I sometimes felt that my second-grade cousin spent more time on homework than I did when I was a 6th grader in the USA! Yet his parents and teachers didn't think he worked hard enough.
Is it too strict in China Or is it not strict enough in the USA Maybe both are true.
( )1. Why did Ted come home with a letter last Friday

Bears are found in Asia, Africa and America. They are very strong, with short tails and thick legs. Bears eat almost everything. They seem to enjoy meat, vegetables, fruit, milk and rice.
Bears are not quite dangerous as people imagine them to be. Like most animals, they will try to stay away from human beings. However, bears are not weak animals. Sometimes they kill hunters, for they can be very dangerous.
Bears have a good sense of smell but they have poor eyesight. They are also hard of hearing but they are very clever. They feed mainly on roots, frogs, fish and also small insects. They will sometimes kill deer and other large animals, but they seem to like small animals better.
In the cold area, bears hibernate or go to sleep from October to April. Before they start to hibernate, they eat a lot and store fat. The mother bear has its babies, usually two, towards the end of hibernation. A large bear is much cleverer than a cat and most other animals. You may notice at the zoo how cleverly they ask for food. They sit up and hold out their paws. You would have to teach a dog such a trick but the bears learn this by themselves.

Long long ago, a donkey(驴) fell into a well(井). The animal cried for hours as the farmer tried to think out what to do. Finally, the farmer thought the animal was too old and the well needed to be covered up anyway, so he decided not to save the donkey.
The farmer invited his neighbours to help him. They began to shovel(铲) dirt into the well. The donkey cried harder. But a few minutes later, he became quiet. The farmer looked into the well, and was surprised by what he saw.
While every shovelful of dirt hit his back, the donkey would shake it off and take a step on the new layer of dirt. As the farmer’s neighbours continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, the donkey would shake it off and take another step up. Soon the donkey stepped up out of the well and ran away, to the surprise of all the neighbours.
The lesson we get from this story is that if life shovels some dirt on us, we must get out of the well and not let it cover us. We must learn to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping-stone(踏脚石). We can get out of the deepest well by never giving up!

Each year, volunteers from all over the world will help hundreds of little sea turtles( 海龟 ) return to the sea safely. These turtles are born on the beaches of the Caribbean Island of Bonaire. The work usually is keeping an eye on these turtles. However, volunteers had to do something they had never done this year. They created a human wall for some of the little turtles that might lose their way.
It all began when volunteers on Bonaire Island noticed some turtles were born a little farther from the beach, closer to the airport. This was a problem because baby sea turtles usually look for the bright moonlight to guide them to the sea.
However, when the turtles are born so close to the airport, they don’t know the difference between the bright lights from the airport and the moonlight. They often walk in the wrong direction.A similar situation happened a few years ago. Many turtles were killed when they walked onto a busy road.
In order not to let this sad story happen again, the volunteers kept a close eye on these little turtles. They came together and created a human wall around the turtles. At last, all the turtles walked in the right directions.
Sea turtles spend most of their lives in water. The only time female turtles come to the beach is to lay eggs.Young turtles may be eaten by other animals. They may be caught by fishing nets and die.Because of this, these turtles have been put on the endangered animals list. Therefore, this news caused animal lovers all over the world to celebrate.
