Bark
Cover Price: $19.80 Price: $15.00($2.50 / issue (期) )
You save: $4.80 (24%) Review: By Pat Kane
I absolutely love Bark magazine! I love the “smiling” pages and the tips on every issue. I am a dog lover and have saved all of my dogs from either death row or from people who were going to put them down. Everyone should have a chance to live and Bark stresses that with its articles. This magazine is a MUST HAVE for any dog lover!!
Dog Fancy
Cover Price: $54.00 Price: $14.99 ($1.25 / issue)

Don't waste your money on this magazine. 60-70 percent of it are advertisements, and the articles offer little useful information. It might be suitable for children, but not adults who are serious about educating themselves about dogs.
Dog World
Cover Price: $48.88 Price: $14.99 ($1.25 / issue)

Dog World has many very interesting and thought-provoking (令人思考的) articles for people involved in dog showing, breeding(饲养), performance events, etc. However, over half of the magazine is devoted to breeder ads, which is boring. Still, as a whole, I recommend(推荐) it for the articles. Good articles, but tons of ads.

About ten men in every hundred suffer from color blindness in some way. Women are luckier; only about one in two hundred is affected in this matter. Perhaps, after all, it is safer to be driven by a woman!
There are different forms of color blindness. In some cases a man may not be able to see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shadows of green. Sometimes a person cannot tell the difference between blue and green. In rare cases an unlucky man may see everything in shades of green -- a strange world indeed.
Color blindness in human beings is a strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millions of very small things called "cones". These help us to see in a bright light and to tell the difference between colors. There are also millions of "rods", but these are used for seeing when it is near dark. They show us shape but no color.
Some insects have favorite colors. Mosquitoes (蚊子) prefer blue to yellow. A red light will not attract insects, but a blue lamp will. In a similar way human beings also have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the aid of the cones in our eyes we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the aid of the rods we can see shapes at night. One day we may even learn more about the invisible (看不见的) colors around us.
4. The passage is mainly about______ .
A. color and its surprising effects.

A. tell different shapes.
B. see in a weak light.
C. kill mosquitoes.

6. Why do some people say it is safer to be driven by women
A. Women are more careful.
B. There are fewer color-blind women.
C. Women are fonder of driving than men.
D. Women are weaker but quicker in thinking.
7. We can attract and kill mosquitoes by using a________ .

Gates attended public elementary school before moving on to the private Lakeside School in North Seattle. It was at Lakeside that Gates began his career in personal computer soft- ware, programming computers at age 13.
In 1973, Gates entered Harvard University as a freshman, where he lived down the hall from Steve Ballmer, who is now Microsoft's president. People who like travelling have their reasons. They believe that travelling can help them expand their field of view, especially in the geographical and historical sense. They also think that touring will give them more chances to enjoy different kinds of food and experience new things that would never be brought by other activities. But those who dislike travelling also have some reasons.
Travelling, in my opinion, does more good than harm. Most importantly, it broadens (使扩大) our mind. We can get in touch with other civilizations (文明), cultures, customs and ideas.
Through history, most people travelled because of necessity (必要性) -not for pleasure. People travelled just in order to remain alive. They searched for food to eat or places to live in. They sometimes ran away from enemies. This is not to say that no one ever travelled just for fun of it. In ancient times, for example, rich Romans travelled all the ways to Greece to take part in the Olympic Games, and festivals. Of course, some people decided to travel just out of curiosity (好奇心). They wanted to find out what it looked like beyond the horizon (地平线). Also business travel has been going on for centuries. Traders could not only make money but also learn to speak several languages and be introduced to different cultures.
So, travelling does enrich our mind and draw new ideas to us. There is no doubt that we can get much from it.
12. The underlined word “expand” in Paragraph 1 can be replaced by “________”.
A. widen B. Protect C. lose D. decide
13. According to the passage, in the past most people travelled________.
A. for fun B. for knowledge
C. to get experiences D. to make a living
14. How many reasons for travelling are mentioned in Paragraph 3
A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.
15. What’s the main idea of this passage
A. Different kinds of travelling. B. Travelling enriches our mind.
C. Ways to enjoy yourself while travelling. D. The advantages and disadvantages of travelling.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. B

【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段前四句“Through history, most people travelled because of necessity (必要性)-not for pleasure. People travelled just in order to remain alive. They searched for food to eat or places to live in. They sometimes ran away from enemies.(纵观历史,大多数人旅行是必须的,而不是为了乐趣。人们旅行只是为了生存。他们寻找食物吃或地方住。他们有时会逃避敌人)”可知,过去大多数人旅行是为了求生存。故选D项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段第二句“People travelled just in order to remain alive. (人们旅行只是为了生存)”;第三段第六句“In ancient times, for example, rich Romans travelled all the way to Greece to take part in the Olympic Games, and festivals. (当然,有些人决定旅行只是出于好奇)”;以及第三段最后一句“Traders could not only make money but also learn to speak several languages and be introduced to different cultures. (商人不仅可以赚钱,还可以学习几种语言,了解不同的文化)”可知,第三段中提到了古代人们旅行的四种原因。故选B项。
【15题详解】

Language is part of our daily lives, no matter where we live in the world. It is the same with music, whether you listen to it on the radio on your drive to work or sit before an orchestra. Both language and music play a huge role in our culture. ___16___
Both language and music have a writing system. In English we record language using the alphabet, which is a collection of letters. In the same way, we use notes to keep a record of music. Just as you are reading this collection of letters on the screen and find meaning in it, musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music which we can hear.___17___ By writing pieces of text or music, we are able to share experiences through time. I can read the ideas or hear the composition of someone who lived hundreds of year ago, which is really quite exciting.
___18___ You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to the language they use. In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation.___19___ Even if you don’t like Britpop melodies, you may love the energy of Latin American salsa music.
Both share emotion. How do you know that I am angry Of course you may be able to see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words.___20___ Music can show you exactly how the composer was or is feeling, and allows us to share in that emotion. When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to a happy song to celebrate your happiness. In contrast, you have probably also listened to sad music when you were feeling down. I think we have all used music to express or process our emotions, often combining it with language in the form of song lyrics.
A. Both vary with culture.
B. Here are some of their similarities.
C. They have some distinguishing characteristics.
D. So just as you read English, you can read music.
E. Similarly, music can sound angry, sad or happy.
F. This also means that there is something for everyone!
【答案】16. B 17. D 18. A 19. F 20. E
【解析】
【分析】这是一篇说明文。文章分析了语言和音乐的共同之处,包括:有书写系统,随文化而变,分享情感。
【16题详解】
根据上文“Both language and music play a huge role in our culture.”(语言和音乐在我们的文化中扮演着重要的角色),下文讲语言和音乐的共同点。故B项“以下是他们的一些相似之处”切题,承上启下连接前后文,similarities呼应下文列举的每段具体的相似点。故选B。
【17题详解】
根据标题“Both language and music have a writing system.”(语言和音乐都有书写系统,它们分别有自己的书写符号)再根据上文“Just as you are reading this collection of letters on the screen and find meaning in it, musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music which we can hear.”(正如你在屏幕上阅读这组字母并从中找到意义一样,音乐家们阅读笔记并以我们能听到的音乐形式创造意义。)可知,选项与上文为因果关系。D项“所以就像读英语一样,你也能读懂音乐”切题,故选D。
【18题详解】
根据下文“You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to the language they use.In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation”(通过听某人使用的语言,你可以很好地猜测他来自哪里。 故选A。
【19题详解】
根据上句“In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation”(同样,我们知道,世界各地的音乐风格各不相同,这让我们有机会通过他们的音乐探索许多不同的文化,并为我们提供适合各种情况的音乐)”可知,不同风格的音乐给我们了解不同文化的机会,所以选项承接上文,说明上文所述内容的意义是什么。故F项“这也意味着有适合每个人的东西”切题。故选F。
【20题详解】
根据上句“Of course you may be able to see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words.”(我们可以通过面部表情和语言来判断一个人的情感),根据下文“Music can show you exactly how the composer was or is feeling, and allows us to share in that emotion.”(音乐可以向你展示作曲家的真实感受)。选项承接上文,说明音乐在表现情感方面的作用。故E项“同样音乐也可以听出来生气、悲伤或快乐。” angry, sad or happy呼应故feeling。故选E。

I’m writing to seek your help because my parents and I are unable to agree on how to learn English.
I’m keen on watching English movies, which I consider a good idea to use different media for study. However, my parents are strongly opposed. They think the language is informal, which might affect my English study. Worse still, it is a waste of my study time since it requires a large amount of energy to have a thorough understanding of a movie.
Should I follow my parents’ advice or stick to my own idea I’d really appreciate your advice. (99 words)
Sincerely,

I absolutely love Bark magazine! I love the “smiling” pages and the tips on every issue. Don't waste your money on this magazine. 60-70 percent of it are advertisements, and the articles offer little useful information. It might be suitable for children, but not adults who are serious about educating themselves about dogs.

B. women being luckier than men.
C. danger caused by color blindness.

A. tell different shapes.
B. see in a weak light.
C. kill mosquitoes.
D. tell orange from yellow.
6. Why do some people say it is safer to be driven by women
A. Women are more careful.
B. There are fewer color-blind women.
C. Women are fonder of driving than men.
D. Women are weaker but quicker in thinking.
7. We can attract and kill mosquitoes by using a________ .
A. red light. B. yellow light . C. blue light. D. green light.

Bill Gates was born on October 28th, 1955. He and his two sisters grew up in Seattle. Their father, William H. Gates II, was a Seattle lawyer. Mary Gates, their late mother, was a school teacher.
While at Harvard, Gates developed a version (版本) of the programming language BASIC for the first microcomputer---the MITS Astair. In his junior year, Gates dropped out of Harvard to devote his energies full-time to Microsoft, a company he had started in 1975 with his boyhood friend Paul Allen. Guided by a belief that the personal computer would be a valuable tool on every office desk-top and in every home, they began developing software for personal computers.
Gates' foresight has led to the success of Microsoft and the software industry. He plays an important role in the technical development of new products. Much of his time is devoted to meeting with customers and staying in touch with Microsoft employees around the world through e-mail.

C. Ways to enjoy yourself while travelling. D. The advantages and disadvantages of travelling.

Language is part of our daily lives, no matter where we live in the world. It is the same with music, whether you listen to it on the radio on your drive to work or sit before an orchestra. Both language and music play a huge role in our culture. ___16___
Both language and music have a writing system. In English we record language using the alphabet which is a collection of letters.
