Many students feel it difficult to remember new words when they begin to study
English. Now I will give you some advice.
Do not waste time in learning a list of English words. It is the hardest way to remember
English words. How do you learn to speak Chinese You did it by listening carefully to the
people talking to each other. You can find radio programs, TV programs and records, and
listen to them carefully. The best way to learnall new words is through ear. As you listen to
more and more dialogues, you will learn how English is pronounced in phrases and
sentences. Of course, it is not enough to learn new words; you must learn how words are
put together, and why some words in English are emphasized (强调).
Some people have found that they can learn the names of everyday objects, such as box,
cup, desk, and so on, in the following way. They write the names of these objects on paper
and put the paper on them. Try this and see if this way works for you. If it does not, then go
on to practice your dialogues.
Things went from bad to worse .Sam died a year later .When Jason came, Mr Lee gave
a letter to him .It was from Sam .In the letter Sam said,“Dear Jason, I am disabled .But I
want you to be a healthy man .So I gave my eyes to you so that you can enjoy life as a
healthy man .Now you have new friends .I'm glad to see that you are as healthy as
usual .I'm glad you live a happy life .You are always my best friend...Sam”.When he
finished reading the letter, Mr. Lee said, “I've promised that I will keep this secret until
Sam is gone .Now you know it .”Jason stood there .Tears ran down his face.

It’s school time again! You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little
sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first
day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and
even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little
while. Let’s find out more about going to a new school.
A. introduce yourself
C. make new friends
B. learn about the school rules
D. go over your new lessons
31. If you happen to see an old friend on the first day of school, from the passage we know

A. nervous

C. happy
D. excited
Most teachers kick off the new school year by introducing themselves and
talking about all the stuff you’ll be doing that year. Some teachers give
students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class,
too. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over
classroom rules and school rules so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s
not. Please pay close attention.
D
American school children love holidays. And they get a lot of them each year. Besides
having national holidays such as Thanksgiving and Presidents’ Day off from school,
students get longer breaks in the spring and during the summer holidays. In fact, kids in the
US only go to school for about 180 days a year. To students, holidays are perfect. However,
parents think there are advantages (优点) and disadvantages (不足).
You might already know a lot of people in your classes on the first day, but
it’s a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to kids you know and
new ones that you don’t. Make the first move and you’ll be glad you did, and
so will your new friend!
On the one hand, school holidays allow families to spend time together. Many American
parents take time off from work during June, July or August to travel with their children on
vacations either in the US or in a foreign country. On the other hand, school children get
much more time off school than parents get vacation time. This means that parents with
young children may have to pay more in babysitting or daycare costs. As well, the long
summer holidays mean that students sometimes get bored.
Seeing friends you haven’t seen in a while can make the first day a good
one. You can make the day feel special by wearing clothes that you really like.
Maybe you got a great T-shirt on one of your vacations, or a pair of sneakers
(运动鞋) . It also can make you feel good to be prepared and have all the
things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you’ll be needing.
But make sure that you pack them the night before in case you don’t have
time in the morning.
Besides going on trips with their parents, American students enjoy taking part in
different kinds of activities during the holidays. For example, some kids enjoy summer
camps and outdoor adventure (冒险 ) holidays. Such trips are great for adventurous
students. They also have a lot to offer students who aren’t usually interested in traditional
PE activities. You can do courses in survival (生存) skills, for example. Students learn how
to make a camp in the forest, which wild food they can eat and how to find their way back
to the center.
28. The underlined phrase “kick off” in the second paragraph probably means
“____________”.
A. start
B. study
C. find
D. teach
期中试卷第3页共6页
Students who are not excited about summer camps and outdoor adventure may take
part in courses in computer game design, film making and photography during the holidays.
Finally, the traditional (传统的) school trip to foreign country is always popular. Students
can practice their foreign language skills and experience everyday life in a different
culture.
