Later that day she went to the fire department, where she met Fireman Bob. She explained her son’s final wish and asked if it might be possible to give her six-year-old son a ride around the block on a fire engine. Fireman Bob said, “Look, we can do better than that. We’ll make him an honorary fireman for the whole day. He can come down to the fire station, eat with us, go out on all the fire calls, the whole nine yards! As one of the world’s most popular cultural mediums, cinema got the most attention at the Taihu World Cultural Forum, an annual event that aims to improve cultural exchanges. It is reported that the box office(票房) takings in China have been growing at an impressive rate in the past five years, which indicates that China, the world’s second-largest movie market, is closing the gap with the United States, the world’s top cinema market.
Cao Yin, director of the program center at China Movie Channel, said that China has the most cinema screens of any country, and the number is increasing steadily. Saying that China has signed coproduction agreements with more than 20 countries, Cao added it has deepened cinematic exchanges between Chinese filmmakers and their foreign counterparts. (同行).
Hong Kong director Stanley Tong said that with the country’s huge home market he believes foreign filmmakers will increasingly seek cooperation with China. “International co-production will become an important platform to send Chinese stories oversea and give us a broader vision of creation,” Tong said.
Recently, over 80 percent of the world’s top 100 highest box-office titles have been action films, Tong said the action film, in which plots are basically secondary to dazzling stunts(特技), is one of the easiest ways to appeal to foreign audiences. But it has been a decades-long struggle for Chinese filmmakers to sell their stories overseas. When asked what kinds of Chinese films would have the most global appeal, Yan Zhaozhu, chairman of the Taihu World Cultural Forum, said stories that address universal issues, such as environmental protection and climate change, are perhaps the best options.

Margaret Mead, the most famous anthropologist(人类学家)in the world, was born in the USA in 1901, the oldest of five children. Her father was a professor of finance and her mother was a sociologist. After studying psychology as an undergraduate, Mead began a PhD in the relatively new field of anthropology. Mead was particularly interested in primitive communities because she believed that such isolated cultures could serve as"laboratories"that would reveal ways of living that the modern world had forgotten about but needed to remember.
Having travelled to Samon, a few tiny volcanic, tropical islands in the center of the Pacific Ocean, Mead gradually got interested in gender roles and discovered that modern societies are far more strict in this area than primitive ones. For example, Americans tend to think of men as productive, sensible, and aggressive, while women are often told they're more light-hearted, peaceful, and nurturing(养育).But in her 1935 book, Sex and Temperament in Three Primitive Societies, Mead studied tribes in Papua New Guinea and recorded that in the Arapesh tribe, both men and women were peaceful and nurturing , while among the Mundugurnor tribe, men and women were both ruthless and aggressive.
Mead's striking conclusion is that it isn't gender that makes women curl their hair or listen to people's feelings, or race that makes some nations regularly attack their neighbors. Rather, it's the social expectations and norms that have laid the groundwork for each individual's psychological makeup. "We must recognize, "she reminded her readers, "that beneath the superficial(表面上的)classifications of sex and race, the same potentialities always exist, occurring again generation after generation, only to perish(湮灭) because society has no place for them."
She is regarded as one of the most influential social scientists of the last century. People around the world mourned the death of Margaret Mead in 1978.A year later, the president of the United States, Jimmy Carter, honored the social scientist with America's highest award for civilians.
32. What can we learn about Mead from the text
A. She was influenced by her mother to be an anthropologist.
B. She majored in psychology and anthropology as an undergraduate.
C. She believed isolated cultures could expose forgotten ways of living to the modern world.
D. She discovered modern societies are less strict in gender roles than primitive ones.
33. It can be inferred from Mead's study in tribes that _________________.
A. the world is filled with separate cultures.
B. no gender characteristics are ever simply "human nature".
C. knowing another culture will help us reflect on our own.
D. social standards are responsible for individual's development.
34. What does the underlined word "them" in the third paragraph refer to
A. Shared potential among humans. B. Classifications of gender and race.
C. Social expectations and norms. D. Individual's psychological makeups.
35. What's the passage mainly about
A. The difference between men and women. B. The recommendation of Mead's book.
C. The groundwork for each individual's makeup. D. The introduction about a great anthropologist.

A knock at the front door announced a visitor. Phil Radcliffe opened the door, looked down, and found a small boy of about 10,head down and face hidden, nose sniffling(抽鼻子),obviously in some unhappiness.
Phil and his wife Molly lived in this neighbourhood for almost three decades. The families here all knew and trusted one another. Youngsters bounced from home to home looking for friends and entertainment. In the school holidays,Molly and Phil had been known to take children at a time to the local cinema to give some of the parents a break.
Having taken him to the living room and had him seated,Phil asked the boy, “Philip, what’s happened ”
The boy seemed genuinely upset by the inquiry. “Sorry,Mr. Radcliffe,” he sobbed,“My dad’s just left home. He is not going to live with us any more. Mum’s crying. It’s made me cry. I don’t think I’m going to see him again.”
Phil sat down next to him and put a comforting arm around his shoulders, trying to reassure the youngster,“I’m sure that you’ll see your father again very soon Philip. You’re a lovely boy and he’ll want to see you a lot. And your teachers will understand if sometimes you’re a bit sad.”
The boy wiped away his tears with the back of a hand.
“Let me get something for us,” Phil suggested. He went into the kitchen, and then returned with an orange juice for the boy, a coffee for himself and a selection of biscuits for them. However upset he might have been, young Philip was obviously happy with the drink and concentrated on the chocolate samples among the biscuits.
Once the boy seemed more settled, Phil proposed, “Perhaps you should call your mum and tell her where you are, so that she doesn’t worry.”
“It’s OK, Mr. Radcliffe” he insisted. “I’ll go home in a few minutes. But I like talking to you.”
“You can stay as long as you want, Philip. I just don’t want your mother to think that she’s lost you.”

作文范文(续写篇)
The response surprised and troubled Philip. He asked Phil if he would lose her one day. He was worried about she would die and he would be without her. Phil comforted him,“Philip, please don’t worry about your mother. She is still young and she’ll be with you. Of course, one day,she will die—but we all will die. When that happens, you will be a different person,an older person. It will be hard but you’ll manage it successfully—believe me.”

M: And how do these people manage to work
W: Well, they have a television set, a computer, a printer and a telephone to connect with other computers.
M: Oh, I see. But surely there’re some advantages in working at home.
W: Yes. People don’t have to spend a lot of time getting to and from their workplaces. The rush hours are the worst time of day. They may make more money if they apply for more different jobs.
M: Ah, yes, I see. What do you think about the conditions of homeworkers
W: Let me tell you what might happen. A British company, for example, in London, might employ clerks in Belfast, or a Paris company could have their managers in Spain. They just use a telephone to call around for the employee.

As the car industry develops, traffic accidents have become as familiar as the common cold. Yet their causes and control remain a serious problem that is difficult to solve. Experts have long recognized that this discouraging problem has many causes. At the very least, it is a problem that involves three factors: the driver, the vehicle and the roadway. If all the drivers exercised good judgment at all times, there would be few accidents. Improved design has helped to make highways much safer. But the number of accidents continues to rise because of human failure and an enormous increase in the number of automobiles on the road.
Attention is now turning increasingly to the third cause of the accidents: the car itself. People want to know how cars can be built better to protect the drivers. So there are also some new driverless cars on the road. Are they really safe
