Students are sitting in a classroom at P. S. 54, a public elementary school in Brooklyn, New York. When their teacher, Adrienne Heim, strikes a bell, they take a deep breath.
The kids are practicing mindfulness. That means they are learning to pay attention to the present moment. Why
Being mindful can help people stay calm and focused, according to Heim. She is the founder of Green Generations. The organization brings mindfulness classes to eight schools in New York City.
Isafye Lewis, 10, has been taking in the class at P. S. 54 for two years. “Mindfulness teaches me to relax,” he told TFK. “It really helps me feel better when I’m disappointed or angry. ”
At P. S. 54, students practice mindfulness through deep breathing, movement, and relaxation exercises. But Heim says that mindfulness is about more than just keeping calm. It also boosts confidence. “It helps children have a right attitude,” she says, “so they can make healthy decisions. ”
Recent research published in Developmental Psychology supports this view. The study also found that mindfulness training can help kids succeed in school. That’s because it trains the brain to pay attention and manage pressure.
“It doesn’t solve math equations for kids,” Mariam Gates, author of This Moment Is Your Life, told TFK. “But what mindfulness does for all of us is help us focus on the moment we’re in, which is the only place we can learn, change, or grow. ”
But you don’t have to be in a classroom to practice mindfulness. Gates says, “You can always bring your attention to this moment and change how you experience it. ”

Dear Mary,
How are you I saw you posted some wonderful photos of the coastline near your hometown. You’re really getting into your photography! Right now I’m taking a break to write you an email.
Remember you said you’d like to come over to the UK sometime this year Well, I was thinking that this year you might like to come to the Edinburgh Festival with me in August. I’ve got an aunt with a flat in the city center who could put us up.
Do you know much about the festival It’s very famous — the biggest, most popular arts festival in the world! There are lots of things going on — art exhibitions, concerts of all kinds, modern dance, a book festival, etc. The thing it’s most famous for is the newest and most exciting theatre. People come from all over the world and perform in their own languages.
In Scotland you have the best of both worlds: culture and wild land. After the festival, we could hire a car and go up to some of the islands off the west coast, like Skye. The weather can be changeable in August, but the landscape is beautiful, with empty beaches and rocky mountains. It’s the perfect place for you to take photos. Afterwards, we could head back to the east coast and visit my friend Rob in St. Andrews. It’s really pretty and Rob’s enjoyable to be with. You’d get on well with him.
So, why don’t you have a think about it and then get back to me Take your time, there’s no rush.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Sophie

That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theater. With opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me.
As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away any possible robbers(抢劫犯). Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.
Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I’d heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.
Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck(垃圾车) pull up to the sidewalk next to me. When a voice called from the inside, “Alisa Camacho ” I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look in his eyes. “Is this what you’re looking for ” he asked, holding up a small square shape.
It was nearly 3 a.m. by the time I got into bed. I wouldn’t get much sleep that night, but I had got my wallet back. I also had got back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn’t be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.

Yours,
Sophie
