When I became president of Sustainable (可持续的) Spartans in May 2020, I had no idea how to successfully run a club on the Internet. My team and I were challenged with how to attract members and continue sustainable projects on campus (校园) while most students lived at home.
Despite the circumstances, my incredible team and I pushed forward. We organized events members could participate in regardless of location. Instead of focusing on building a more sustainable campus, we thought it was more important to get more and more students to accept sustainability.
In September, our Vermicomposting project began with the support from an online workshop. Vermicomposting is the process by which worms turn food waste and other materials into fertilizer. The workshop tied together club members and workshop students, educating and inspiring some to start their own worm bins at home.
In October, we held our first SpartansPickUp Day, co-hosted with Spartans Sierra Club. Fourteen teams of students safely picked up trash and posted pictures online. The cooperation brought some environmental student organizations together and attracted more student participation.
Our most notable accomplishment was working with the Office of Sustainability to build a pollinator (授粉者) garden on campus. The garden would improve the campus' climate by attracting pollinators, increasing biodiversity and reducing soil loss. We posted some videos of the garden, and students were expecting to return to campus to visit it.
Student organizations provide an important aspect of college life and I'm proud to say we've carried that into the digital space. Personally, I've discovered my club is an incredible outlet for me to dive into my sustainability passion and take a step back from the great stress of job search and online learning. I encourage all students to join a student organization to find how you can translate your passion into meaningful projects.
4. What made it difficult for the author to do her work
A. Lack of her team's spiritual support. B. The absence of students on campus.
C. The existing environmental problems. D. Her inability to run sustainable projects.
5. What was the focus of Sustainable Spartans in 2020
A. To create a safe living environment.
B. To spread the idea of sustainability.
C. To raise money for its future projects.
D. To build a clean and beautiful campus.

A. By attracting students back to the campus.
B. By seeking financial help from authorities.
C. By working with some other organizations.

What if our city streets could act like forests and reduce pollution Thanks to scientific innovation, roads treated with a new pavement technology can now literally eat smog and help keep cities cool. Since there is little room for forests in urban areas, where air pollution actually occurs, Pavement Technology Inc. (PTI), together with researchers from Louisiana State University, came up with an asphalt spray (沥青喷雾) called A. R. A. -1 Ti.
The spray's exact composition hasn't been revealed, but it is known to be based on titanium oxide (二氧化钛), a component contained in many sunscreens on the market. This chemical substance acts as a photocatalyst, so when ultraviolet rays (紫外线) from the sun activate its electrons, light and heat are absorbed and moved apart. Through a chemical process, titanium oxide also breaks down poisonous substances in the air. “In good conditions, we can achieve a 60% reduction”, said Michael Durante, PTI's vice president of finance and strategic planning. But the spray is not only meant to address overheating and to remove harmful gases produced by cars. It can also make aging asphalt stronger, preventing breaks generated by severe heat, the Ohio-based firm states, according to Gizmodo.
This impressive list of properties has encouraged several cities in the US to try out the product. The success stories keep adding up. At Orlando International Airport, taxiway pavements that had been sprayed with the titanium dioxide-based composition have already managed to reduce nitrogen oxide rates by half. And in Charleston, the pavement treatment is being used in low-income neighborhoods that have many asphalt-coated roads.
The company suggests that while heat shortens pavement life, their product's components can extend it from five to ten years, which translates the pavements into sustainable roads. And although green spaces are still necessary and cannot be fully replaced due to their multiple environmental and health benefits, innovations like A. R. A. -1 Ti are extremely promising. We may expect to see the major benefits it can bring to public health, positively impacting the lives of billions living in urban areas worldwide.

A. To effectively protect forests.
B. To relieve traffic jams in city streets.
C. To reduce urban heat and air pollution.
D. To detect the weather and road conditions.
9. What can we know about the asphalt spray according to paragraph 2

Like a tired marriage, the relationship between libraries and publishers has long been reassuringly dull. E-books, however, are causing heartache. Libraries know they need digital wares if they are to remain relevant, but many publishers are too careful about piracy and lost sales to co-operate. Among the big six, only Random House and Harper Collins license e-books with most libraries. The others have either denied requests or are reluctantly experimenting.
Publishers are wise to be nervous. Owners of e-readers are exactly the customers they need: book-lovers with money—neither the devices nor broadband connections come cheap. If these wonderful people switch to borrowing e-books instead of buying them, what then Electronic borrowing is awfully convenient. Unlike printed books, which must be checked out and returned to a physical library miles from where you live, book files can be downloaded at home. Digital library catalogues are often browsed at night from a; comfortable sofa. The files disappear from the device when they are due. Awkwardly for publishers, buying an e-book costs more, than renting one but offers little extra value.
You cannot resell it, lend it to a friend or burn it to stay warm. Owning a book is useful if you want to savor (品尝) it repeatedly, but who reads “Fifty Shades of Grey” twice
E-lending is not simple, however. There are lots of different and often incompatible e-book formats, devices and licences. Most libraries use a company called Over Drive, a global distributor that secures rights from publishers and provides e-books and audio files in every format. Yet publishers and libraries are worried by Over Drived market dominance, as the company can increasingly dictate fees and conditions.
Library boosters argue that book borrowers are also book buyers, and that libraries are vital spaces for readers to discover new work. Many were cheered by a recent Pewsurvey, which found that more than half of Americans with Horary cards say they prefer to buy their e-books. But the report also noted that few people know that e-books are available at most libraries, and that popular titles often involve long waiting lists, which may be what inspires people to buy.
So publishers keep adjusting their lending arrangements in search of the right balance. The story of the library e-book is a nail-biter.
12. What can be inferred from the first paragraph
A. Libraries are eager to keep relationship with publishers.
B. Several publishers have sold e-books to most libraries.
C. Libraries care too much about piracy and book sales.
D. Most publishers hesitate to cooperate with libraries.
13. What does the author say about electronic borrowing

B. It needs checking out and returning to the library via the Internet.
C. It enables readers to resell the book files or lend them to friends.
D. It has a time limit for the book files downloaded on the device.
14. What do we learn about Over Drive
A. It has the privilege to offer readers various brands of e-readers.
B. It distributes e-books and audio files to publishers.
C. Its market dominance threatens publishers and libraries.
D. It devotes itself to improving conditions of e-book market.
15. Which of the following does the writer want to tell us
A. people with library cards have to wait to borrow popular e-books

C. more than half of Americans choose e-books over physical copies

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文,
It was on a Christmas Eve when I was five years old that my dad upon arriving home from work informed my mom and me that he would be working the next day, Christmas Day.
My dad, who was the manager of his work station, calmly explained that although he was not scheduled to work, he volunteered to do so.
My mom was visibly upset. “Ren, you work on Christmas day every year. Man, you are not making any Christmas memories with these kids. ”The rest of the evening we were discouraged. My mom and I were both very upset with Daddy.
I awoke on Christmas morning to the sounds of Christmas songs on our huge radio that was stationed in the living room. Mom and Dad were joking about something or the other there. She had apparently forgiven him sometime over the course of the night.
It was Christmas Day! I ran straight for the living room to wish my mom, dad and brother the merriest Christmas ever! After we all greeted each other, we began our usual Christmas morning ritual (仪式): Dad read the Christmas story. After the Christmas story, it was time to dig into the presents under the tree. It was the pink kitchen set, complete with tiny plastic pots, pans, plates, cups and a whole stove in it. It was exactly what I wanted and I was thrilled.
After breakfast, my dad departed.
My mom started on Christmas Dinner. I wanted to help her but I was too distracted (注意力分散的) cooking my own imaginary meal on my new kitchen set. But soon I was bored with that and I joined my mother in the kitchen. “Mom, why does Daddy never get a turn to get a holiday on Christmas ” I asked. However, my mom did not give me a satisfactory answer.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 The rest of the day flew slowly without Dad. During lunch when we carved the turkey, Dad wasn’t here; at night when my aunts and cousins stopped by, he wasn’t here; when we were enjoying the laughter, he completely missed it. Christmas Day came and gone and I felt pitiful for my dad. For me, volunteering to work on Christmas every year equalled that I preferred to go to school rather than take Christmas vacation. I was puzzled about Dad’s choice.
I decided to ask Dad why he chose not to celebrate with us every year. Hardly had my dad arrived home the next day when I couldnt wait to ask. Daddy’s response impressed me a lot. Christmas is a happy time with great memories filled with love and family. The other employees all wanted the day off. It was he, the manager of the station that should bear the responsibility. Only if he led the role could more people spend a happier Christmas. Dad's selflessness quality has a lasting effect on me.

6. How did the author manage to carry out the projects
A. By attracting students back to the campus.
B. By seeking financial help from authorities.
C. By working with some other organizations.
D. By gathering all students for some field trips.
7. What does the author try to convey in the last paragraph
A. Leadership is the basis of success on campus.

C. Participating in sustainable projects is very easy.
D Joining student organizations really matters a lot.

8. What is the function of the innovation
A. To effectively protect forests.
B. To relieve traffic jams in city streets.
C. To reduce urban heat and air pollution.
D. To detect the weather and road conditions.
9. What can we know about the asphalt spray according to paragraph 2
A. It extends life of roads.
B. It blocks out ultraviolet light.
C. It is produced by sunscreens' components.
D. It may absorb harmful substances in the air.
10 What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. The importance of the invention.
B. The necessity of the road treatment.
C. The successful application of the spray.
D. The increasing popularity of the product.
11. Which could be the best title for the text
A. A Major Reform in Urban Construction
B. Green Spaces: The Access to Public Health
C. The Bright Prospect of the Pavement Technology
D. A New Asphalt Spray: The Welfare to Urban Areas

A. It can help save readers' expenses on devices and broadband connections.

It was on a Christmas Eve when I was five years old that my dad upon arriving home from work, informed my mom and me that he would be working the next day, Christmas Day.
