一、阅读理解题
Even as a bush fire threatened the rural Australian community, Gary Wilson and his partner Julie Willis decided not to flee their wooden house.
The two had a home full of baby kangaroos to protect. More than 10 of the baby kangaroos—called joeys—stayed safe inside fabric pouches (育儿袋) that hung in the couple's living room. Each piece of cloth looked like the opening in which mother kangaroos carry their young. Wilson and Willis have taken care of wild animals before. Recently, full-grown kangaroos and other wildlife that had left their care long ago came back to the house in search of protection as the fires grew nearer. "We had too many animals in the house and around the house so we really couldn't go," Wilson said. "We decided we were going to stay and fight." Their home is now surrounded by burned land and vehicles.
Wilson and Willis defended their home with fire extinguishers (灭火器) and water pumps. Their house also had a special device on top that sprayed water on hot ashes falling on the roof.
Good preparation and good luck helped the building stay safe. And the animals have survived. But the fire killed two of Wilson's neighbors. "It was a horrible thing," Wilson said.
Willis said, "It's not until after the fires when it really hits you how close you were to dying..."
While Wilson and Willis usually care for joeys that are rescued after their mothers are struck by vehicles, they are now welcoming an increasing number of fire orphans.
She said, "We didn't have children ourselves; this is what we spend our time doing. We think it's worthwhile—a worthwhile cause—looking after our babies no matter what they are..."

Michael Jackson was on the road of performing when he was five years old. As is known to all, the road to fame and fortune is long and hard.
Michael remembers those early years when he was young. "My father was a machine operator," he explained, "and he worked at a steel plant. My mother worked at Sears, a big department store. But they were both musicians."
Michael's father Joe Jackson realized his sons had a lot of talent, and he knew he could train them to become fine musicians. In those days there were plenty of music groups and some of them were very good. He knew that if his sons were to stand out, they would have to be the best.
Practice makes perfect. And the Jackson boys practiced! Gradually the group took shape. Then word of this group began to get around. Thus Michael got a chance to do some solo (独唱的) songs. In the following years, Michael was always on the top. One million records of his were sold in New Zealand, which had only a total population of three million then!
When Michael was eighteen, he entered another field of his career (职业生涯)—acting. "I plan to star in movies," he told his friends "but of course, my first love is music."
Michael wrote a lot of his own songs. "Songs came about in the strangest ways," he said, "I'll just wake up from sleeping and there is a whole song coming into my head. And then I put it down on the paper."
Still, with all his success. Michael managed to keep his head calm. "I just do a different job from other people," he said, "but it doesn't make me think I'm better than other people."
To be quite honest, his fans just love to hear and watch him!

Jack Rummler was in the hospital, but he kept emailing his journalism teacher and classmates at Boone High School in the US. He wanted to stay on the top of his newspaper work and didn't want anyone else to be stuck with the tasks he'd taken on.
"He would be in the hospital writing stories," said Renee Burke, his teacher at the time. "He wouldn't stop worrying about us."
Rummler, 18, said he did this because he enjoyed high school journalism so much. "Every little aspect of it."
"He is a compassionate (有同情心的) student," Burke said, "who always seems to be thinking about others, even when he faces his own challenges."
Born with spina bifida (脊柱分裂), he walks with a limp (走路一瘸一拐) and has had about 12 surgeries. Two years ago, medical problems kept him out of school for weeks.
"Yet, he never wanted to be treated differently," Burke said, nor did he avoid doing anything that might be physically challenging for him, such as filming football games." During his high school life, he worked his way up from the staff member to the editor-in-chief of the Boone paper.
And last month, he won the "student journalist of the year" award from the Florida Scholastic Press Association.
The contest required student journalists to put together examples of their work and their ability to be "backpack journalists" who could take on many types of assignments. Rummler's examples included stories and opinion pieces, a graphic he'd designed about school construction, and a TV commercial (广告) for the paper's online site.
"I think one of the things that journalism taught me is to always be aware of what's going on in the world," he said.
His school paper publishes in print four times a year, as well as online. The last issue he worked on was about graduation, showcasing the accomplishments of top students and athletes, among the soon-to-be graduates.
In August, Rummler will start at the University of Florida, where he plans to study environmental sustainability and communications.
"Whatever he does, he's going to be great at it," said Bridgette Norris, the current journalism teacher at Boone, who taught him this past school year.

Eating out is such a pleasure—the food, the wine, the joy of having it all brought to you by someone else—that it's a pity to ruin the experience by sharing it with other people.
Well, I do like visiting restaurants with friends. But dining out alone has its own very special attractions. For a start you can give all your attention to the food. There's nothing worse than having to invent and deliver an opinion on school league tables or Sanchez's move to Manchester United, plus listen to everyone else's opinions, when all you really want to do is enjoy each mouthful along the way.
A second great thing about eating out alone is the chance to combine food with one of life's other true pleasures: reading. You have to plan this carefully: Indian or Chinese restaurants are the best—you need food you can eat with just one hand, leaving the other free to hold your reading material.
But perhaps the biggest attraction of a table for one is the chance it gives to people-watching. Restaurants and the different reasons for visiting them—the first date, business meeting or night out with friends—produce human behaviour of surprising richness and variety. Will the man selling his business idea get any joy out of his possible investor (投资者) Will the married couple think of anything to say to each other before their main courses arrive
This "human zoo" part of eating out alone is one of the reasons I'd hate to be famous: everyone would be watching you, so you wouldn't be able to watch them. The snooker player Steve Davis says that this was one of the strangest consequences (后果) of becoming well-known: he got very worried about his eating in public, almost to the level of doubting whether he was doing it right.
So next time you're considering your eating out choices, remember the advice of the businessman Nubar Gulbenkian: "The best number for a dinner party is two—myself and a super head waiter."
(1) What does the text mainly talk about
A.The reasons for eating out alone.
B.The trouble with eating in public.
C.The suggestions about dining out.
D.The fear of making dining choices.
(2) What is the best part of dining out alone
A.One can fix his eyes on the food.
B.One can enjoy reading while eating.
C.One is likely to come across famous people.
D.One is given the chance to watch other diners.
(3) What does the author intend to tell us in Paragraph 5
A.Steve Davis cared too much about table manners.
B.Famous people are always the center of attention.
C.Being famous may ruin the joy of eating out alone.
D.Being watched seems far better than watching others.
(4) What is suggested at the end of the text
A.Dining with friends. B.Chatting over dinner.
C.Having a table for one. D.Sharing a table with a waiter.
Leonardo da Vinci and Nature
In the modern world, art and science are two very separate activities, but in Leonardo's time they were closely connected. Science meant mathematics and medical studies. Mathematics included practical work like surveying land for making maps as well as measuring the movements of the stars in the sky. An artist might need to measure the different parts of the body. He could also use mathematics to place things in relationship to each other in a drawing or painting so the scene looked correct.
Mathematics was also connected to music because musical sounds have a fixed relationship with each other that can be described in numbers. More than this, though. Leonardo believed that numbers were a part of all things in the world including music, and he said that "without them nothing can be done".
"Nature has kindly given us things everywhere to copy," wrote Leonardo. In all his activities, Leonardo was trying to discover the rules that control nature. In his search for those rules, he looked very carefully at a lot of examples and details. Actual experience was more important to him than the opinion, and he worked from facts to ideas. His purpose was to examine the world so he could copy it in beautiful paintings and sculptures. He also wanted to learn from the clever solutions of nature.
His quick little sketches (素描), often done while wandering outside, helped him to catch a movement or a shape. More careful drawings would be done at a desk with a pen and a ruler. In July 2001, a small drawing by Leonardo was sold for $12 million. It was the most expensive drawing in the world.

Tom was working in a big company. He had been on the road visiting people for more than a month without going home. He couldn't wait to get back to see his wife and children. It was coming up on Mother's Day, and he usually tried to make it "back home", but this year he was just too busy and too tired. The day when he was driving in a small town, he saw a flower shop. He said to himself. "I know what I will do. I'll send my mother some roses."
He stopped and went into the flower shop and saw a young man talking to the girl in it. "How many roses can I get for five dollars, Ms. " the boy asked. The girl was trying to explain that roses were expensive. Maybe the young man would be happy with something else.
"No. I have to have roses," he said. "My mom was badly sick last year and I didn't get to spend much time with her. I want to get something special. It has to be red roses, because those are her favorite." He was stubborn.
The girl in the shop looked up at Tom and was just shaking her head. Something inside Tom was touched by the boy's voice. He wanted to get those roses so badly. Tom had been blessed with his business, and he looked at the girl and silently said that he would pay for the boy's roses.
The girl looked at the young man and said, "Ok, I will give you a dozen red roses for your dollars." The young man almost jumped into the air. He took the flowers and ran out of the store. It was worth more than fifty dollars just to see that kind of excitement.
Tom ordered his own flowers and asked the girl to have them delivered (递送) to his mother. After that, with a relief (松了一口气) he drove down the road. Not long after his driving, he saw the boy walking to a graveyard (墓地).
Paragraph 1:
Tom stopped his car and followed the young man.

Tom went into the car in tears.

I'm writing to extend our sincere gratitude to you for your hospitality during our stay in Canada.
We were deeply impressed by the comfortable accommodation and the superb local cuisine you arranged for us. And the activities you organized not only broadened our horizons but promoted our mutual understanding. We now have a deeper insight into Canadian culture.
Thanks again for all your efforts. We do hope you can visit our school in the near future!
Best wishes,
