Text 1
W: Have you heard of Thomas Edison
M: Sure. He was an inventor who invented the light bulb.
W: That’s right. He invented the world’s first long-lasting light bulb. And actually he had an inspiration because he’s afraid of the dark!
M: Really Interesting!
Text 2
M: Mom, it’s getting dark. Where is our cat Does he stay out at night
W: Don’t worry. He’ll come back when he gets hungry.
Text 3
W: Welcome to our show, Mr. Johnson. So what advice do you give to young people on starting a business
M: Well, most of my failures have come from trying to sell something that people didn’t want. So my advice is to do your homework to find out what people want.
Text 4
M: Wayne is sick today. Can you come to the office
W: But it’s my day off today.
M: I know. I’ll pay you extra.
W: OK, OK. I’m going to walk to my car. See you soon.
Text 5
W: Where do your grandparents come from
M: My mom’s parents were born in the US, but my dad’s parents come from Turkey. How about you
W: I think all my grandparents come from Germany.
Text 6
W: Look, there’s a snack bar. Let’s go now!
M: Okay, what food do you want to try
W: ⑥I am going to eat the gado-gado.
M: ⑥What’s that
W: ⑥It’s a traditional Indonesian salad with peanut sauce. What about you
M: Hmm… I have no idea.
W: Do you want noodles, vegetables, or rice
M: ⑦I’d like to have some vegetables. Do you know if there are any spicy vegetable dishes

M: ⑦I’ll have a shot.
Text 7
M: ⑧So, what are you getting Thomas for his birthday
W: ⑧I haven’t come up with anything yet. If you were me, what would you buy
M: What about a T-shirt You can go to buy a special T-shirt for him. It’s comfortable enough to wear for work and travel as well.
W: But I got him one last year. I want to get something different for him this year.
M: All right. Let me think. ⑨How about a briefcase He can use it to carry his documents. And it’s not so expensive.
W: Good idea. His briefcase is getting too old.

W: Of course. Why not do some shopping right now
Text 8
W: I heard the news that someone who had plastic surgery is unable to make certain facial expressions now.
M: Oh my goodness. ⑩I don’t suppose plastic surgery is the way to get better, which may have side-effects.
W: ⑩I’m sorry I can’t agree with you. Everyone has the right to be beautiful, whether it is to gain confidence or to repair a flaw in oneself.
M: Sounds reasonable. Nowadays many people judge a book by its cover. So why do you think many people would like to have plastic surgery
W: I guess some may change their fortunes through plastic surgery and some may pursue the trend of it in order to keep up with others. But for most people, it is to gain confidence.
M: Well, coffee time is over. Let’s stop to work.
Text 9
W: What did you think of Katrina next door
M: She was very quiet compared to her husband.
W: Oh yeah. Michael is a party animal.
M: Do you mean he behaves like an animal I think he’s charming.

M: Yes. Katrina reads a lot too. She likes Russian literature.
W: Yes, we had a long conversation about Tolstoy. She had just read Anna Karenina. And I heard her next novel would be published next month.
M: Oh, amazingly. I thought she taught at a school.
W: She used to be a teacher at our little boy’s school. But now she works at home. She often looks tired. She always gets up early in the morning to prepare food. And Michael always has an excuse to refuse to do housework.
M: Oh, man! Katrina sounds like a lark. And Michael is a cuckoo.
W: I’ve never heard these expressions before. What do you mean
M: A lark gets up early. It’s a cuckoo that means a crazy person.
Text 10
W: And now, Words and Their Stories, from VOA Learning English.
Sweat. Those tiny drops of liquid that make up part of our body’s cooling system.
We sweat when we do hard physical work. For example, running is a great way to work up a sweat.
We also sweat when it’s hot outside.
Sweating can also be a sign that you are unsure of your ability. That is why one popular advertisement for underarm deodorant had this famous expression: “Never let them see you sweat.”
Finally, sweating could be seen as a sign that you are lying. If you watch crime shows, sweating is one thing police look for when they question a suspect of a crime.
Here is another strange expression: “Don’t sweat it.” This is a way of saying “no problem” or “don’t worry about it.” One time, my roommate and I decided to get rid of stuff and make a little money. It was a really hot day. So, I took off my favorite jacket and set it aside. By the end of the morning, I couldn’t find it. My roommate asked me, “Was it the black jacket with lightning on it ” “Yes,” I answered. She quietly said, “I think I sold it.” I could tell that she felt badly. So, to make her feel better I said, “Don’t sweat it! It’s not a big e on, let’s order pizza and drinks!” Inside, though, I must admit... I was a little upset. It was my favorite jacket.
And that’s it for this Words and Their Stories. I’m Anna Matteo.青岛市4区市2022届高三上学期期中考试

The winners will learn about the history of the Galileo brand and explore incredible destinations there like Ancona, a city and seaport that sits along Italy’s Adriatic coast; Mount Conero, known as a “small piece of heaven” on the Adriatic Sea with some of the clearest water; and finally, San Marino, said to be the world’s oldest surviving republic. While in Sant’Angelo in Vado, the winners will visit La Tavola Marche, a unique hands-on cooking experience where guests can immerse themselves in Italian culture and food.

Halfway through the women’s slalom (障碍滑雪赛) event at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, 18-year-old Mikaela Shiffrin held a commanding lead over the greatest women’s slalom skiers in the world. On her final run, she burst from the start house at top speed, zigzagging (曲折行进) around the poles. Suddenly, her left ski slid out, causing her to temporarily lose control. It seemed as if her dreams of a gold medal might slide down the mountain, out of her reach. But in the blink of an eye, Mikaela stopped her mini-skid and rocketed through the rest of her run. She became the youngest slalom skier ever to win an Olympic gold medal.
Skiing has always been a big part of Mikaela’s life. At two and a half years old, Mikaela made her first ski run down her steep driveway on plastic skis. From ages 8 to 11, she worked hard, repeating hundreds of training runs on small hills to learn the correct techniques. When Mikaela was 11, she enrolled at the Burke Mountain Academy, a Vermont boarding school for skiers.
According to headmaster Kirk Dwyer, “What separated Mikaela from others was the degree of her commitment to be the best. Mikaela practiced more than anyone and believed in herself then and now.” At age 14, Mikaela began her international career when she raced in the world championships for 13-and 14-year-olds. And she won! By the time she was 17, she had already won her first World Cup race.
For Mikaela, working hard is a full-time job. In the summer, when Mikaela is off the ski slopes and in the gym, her daily training consists of six to seven hours of weightlifting, core body work, and biking to improve her strength and agility.
“If you’re passionate about your goals, whatever they are,” she says, “there’s no limit to what you can achieve. Give it your all!”
24. What happened to Mikaela at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games
A. She fell behind others at first.
B. She overcame the accident and completed her run.
C. She lost control and slid down the mountain.
D. She was the first slalom skier to win an Olympic gold medal.
25. According to the text, how many times did Mikaela win in international competitions
A. One B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
26. Which of the following best describes Mikaela
A. Demanding and curious. B. Ambitious and diligent.
C. Caring and brave. D. Patient and intelligent.
27. What is the best title for the text
A. Zigzagging to Success B. The Strength of Confidence
C. The Value of Failure D. An Exciting Slalom Event

Ever since the success of Apollo 11, when lunar travel was finally publicly acknowledged to be safe for humans, people have been waiting for the day when space would be opened up on a large scale to those who are not astronauts. It has finally become a reality, at least for people who have the means. The space flights are not cheap—each flight into outer space costs about U.S. $ 20 million.
But space travel agencies now have a clever plan to offer suborbital (亚轨道的) flights, which cost about U.S. $100 000. A lunar mission is also made available by space tourism agency, Space Adventures, where tourists, accompanied by one professional astronaut, would be able to reach within 100km of the Moon’s surface, enabling them to see the bright far-side of the moon and witness Earth rising above the surface of the moon.
Further extending the idea of space tourism, plans are underway to open a resort in space. In Galactic Suite Space Resort, a space resort started by a Spanish entrepreneur, guests are promised a remarkable experience with an orbital stay onboard with first-class resort facilities; they can enjoy a weightless spa as they watch 15 sunsets in one day; and tourists would be able to complete a single orbit in 80 minutes—all this while staying in a bio-inspired space, similar to a tropical paradise island!
Space tourism is, however, not environmentally-friendly. There are suggestions that black carbon emitted by the spacecraft could raise temperatures at the poles, contributing to global warming. An increase in space travel would mean that Man would not only leave his footprint in space but also his waste—space tourism can lead to pollution of the environment of the outer space.
Without a doubt, space tourism opens up new exciting possibilities. With time, the price would become more reasonable. Increasing commercialisation of space would also mean that a structure would be put in place for the disposal of rubbish. However, with no immediate solutions, space tourism would probably prove to be yet another controversial (有争议的) adventure of mankind.
28. What does the word “means” in Paragraph 1 mean
A. Methods. B. Courage. C. Money. D. Dreams.
29. What do we know about the Galactic Suite Space Resort
A. It enables guests to see the bright far-side of the moon.
B. It offers high quality service to guests.
C. It promises guests can go around the world in one day.
D. It is built on a tropical paradise island.
30. What is the future of space tourism according to the last paragraph
A. Bright. B. Uncertain. C. Meaningless. D. Disastrous.
31. What is the purpose of this text
A. To talk about the topic of space travel.
B. To warn people of the danger of space travel.
C. To encourage people to travel in space.
D. To call on people to protect outer space.

Watching humorous videos on the Internet at work isn’t always a waste of time. According to Ruby Nadler, a Ph.D. student at the University of Western Ontario, “Generally, positive mood has been found to enhance creative problem solving and flexible yet careful thinking.” She and her colleagues published new research in the Psychological Science.
Students in the study were put into various moods before being given a category learning assignment to complete (they learned to classify sets of pictures with visually complex patterns). The researchers used music and video clips to alter people’s moods; initially, they tested out a few to see which ones made individuals the happiest and saddest. The happiest music was a cheerful Mozart composition, while the happiest video was a newborn laughing.
The researchers then used them in the experiment, along with sad music and video (a piece of music from Schindler’s List and a news report about an earthquake) and music and video that had no effect on mood. People were required to learn to detect a pattern after listening to the music and seeing the movie. Volunteers who were happy were better at learning a rule to categorize the patterns than those who were sad or indifferent.
“If you have a project where you want to think innovatively, or you have a problem to carefully consider, being in a positive mood can help you to do that,” Nadler says. And music is a simple method to put yourself in a good mood. Everyone responds to various types of music, so don’t feel it a must to switch to Mozart, she adds.
32. What is the research about
A. The effects of humorous videos.
B. Positive mood and creative thinking.
C. Ways to solve creative problems.
D. Types of learning.
33. What were the volunteers required to do at last in the research
A. Experience various moods.
B. Decide which music made them the happiest and saddest.
C. Classify pictures with complex patterns.
D. Listen to music and see the movie.
34. How did the researchers draw the conclusion
A. By making comparisons. B. By giving examples.
C. By making explanations. D. By making classifications.
35. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Mozart is a better choice than other types of music.
B. Classic music is the easiest way to make people happy.
C. You can’t think innovatively being in a bad mood.
D. Listening to music enhances creative thinking.

How to Efficiently Prepare for a Test
Exam taking is a demanding process. Preparing for it is even more challenging. Sometimes you have that eagerness to stay glued onto the books and try to input everything into your brain. 36 Here are some tips in better preparing for a test.
37 Reviewing is useless if your heart is not into it. Focus and maintain that drive to prepare for the exam. Also, take note of your reasons for scoring highly in the exam. Give yourself multiple positive objectives. It is like setting the mood for it.
After motivating yourself, check how reliable your memory is. It can come in handy if you have lots of concepts to remember. Every day make it a point to memorize at least ten terms. 38
If you have the materials, try to summarize them by listing down important points. Gather lessons, notes, and books about the subject you are to take an exam for. 39 It does not only test your skill in memory recall, but it also measures how well you have been studying.
When you study, choose the perfect time and place for you where there are no distractions. Likewise, you must determine your learning style. You might find it more comfortable studying in the library than at your own home.
Remember that reviewing allows you to recount the lessons and process them more systematically. 40 When you know you have studied well, then you wouldn’t really have to worry about taking the test.
A. Add more terms as the days succeed.
B. Take memory-enhancing games and puzzles.
C. One of the most important things is to motivate yourself.
D. So give yourself enough time in studying, and beat the nervousness.
E. Reread your notes and try to recall how they were discussed by your professor.
F. But other times you just don’t know what to do with the loads of lessons to study about.
G. You wouldn’t expect yourself to be mentally and physically prepared for the test as well.

Taylor opened her sleepy eyes and looked out the window at the foggy field below. “NO!” she cried, now fully awake. Buttermilk, the cow, was in Mama’s daisy(雏菊) field.
I must have forgotten to fasten the gate last night, Taylor thought as she pulled a sweatshirt over her head. Mama was planning to sell daisy bouquets at the fair next week. But Buttermilk was eating the flowers.
Taylor hurried outside and grabbed the lead rope hanging on the porch. “Why can’t you stay in the field ” she shouted at Buttermilk as she headed across the yard to the daisy field.
Buttermilk stood nipping (啃咬) tender flowers off their stems. Taylor leaped to her feet and rushed to the cow. Angry and anxious, she thought to herself: “When I grow up, I’ll be an artist and paint pictures all day. I’ll never own a cow. Too much trouble.”
Just as Taylor was about to snap the lead rope onto Buttermilk’s collar, the family dog, Red, rounded the corner of the house. The cow couldn’t stand Red.
Buttermilk took off, tearing through the daisies and across the yard. She finally ran through the open gate and into the field.
“Thank goodness!” Taylor said as she closed the gate and secured the latch (门栓).
She turned to look at the flower garden. Most of the daisies were either eaten or crushed.
Mama came out of the house. “What’s going on ” she asked. She looked sadly at her garden.
“I forgot to latch the gate,” Taylor said.“ I’m so sorry.”
“I know you are.” Mama sighed and gave Taylor a hug. “You learned an important lesson today.”
Taylor’s heart was heavy as she went back into the house. She had to think of a way to make it up to her mother.
