A number of fans traveled far to meet this local hero, Sam. He was no ordinary fisherman. He was
famous for having saved so many lives during one night when the worst storm hit the islands.
Reaching there, they noticed that on the side of his boat was carved the number "22". Since none of
the other boats resting along the water's edge had any marking, quite understandably, they assumed that
this then must be the number of people he had saved from the boiling ocean. But they were to discover
that this was not the case; rather, he used it to remind himself of the souls he had failed to save that
night. Though the fisherman had saved so many people that night, he still thought his ability was limited
and he longed to improve it.
And so it was, and so it should be. People should measure themselves by their own watermark and
not by that of others. Nothing matters more than truly understanding the measure of oneself; only we
know who we truly are. What others think might be important for our reputation, but that is not the
absolute measure. There is a vast difference between what people show of themselves and who they
truly are. Besides, by some people's standards, living a good material life is regarded as the measure of
success. They are busy collecting "life trophies (奖杯)" so that they lose the true value and quality of
life. Wealth is ephemeral (短暂的); eventually, we own nothing but who we are within. Understanding
this meaningful yet simple truth teaches us the value of life. So, take care of how you see the inner value
of yourself. Be strict with yourself and gather all your enthusiasm and energy to give your best as the
fisherman did, and you will attain what you want sooner or later.
24. What does the carved number “22” stand for
A. The date of the accident B. The name of Sam’s boat
C. The number of the storm victims D. The number of people Sam save
25. Which of the following could best describe the fisherman
A. Courageous and modest B. Ambitious and optimistic
C. Adventurous and energetic D. Self-disciplined and hard-working
26. What should we focus on in our life according to the author
A. Contributions to society B. The inner value of ourselves
C. Others’ respect and recognition
D. The gap between the true self and others’ expectation
27. What lesson can we learn from the text
A. Be happy with what you have B. Try hard to be respectable
C. Give the best of ourselves D. No man can be perfect

Pigs may be more intelligent than people thought, as shown in a study where pigs used a
joystick(操纵杆) and played a video game. Researchers used 2-year-old Panepinto micro pigs called
Ebony and Ivory, as well as Hamlet and Omelet,3-month old Yorkshire pigs. Researchers first taught
these pigs how to play with a joystick, teaching them the word, "joystick". Next, on the words “watch
the screen, they learned how to watch targets on the screen. Of course, praise was given to the active
pigs winning a game.
【孝感市普通高中协作体期中联合考试·高三英语试卷(共 8 页)第 4 页】
During the experiment, all pigs performed well. As they became more successful, the level of
difficulty increased, just like in human video games! At first, the pigs had to hit a three-walled target
which was then reduced to two walls and then one wall.
All pigs did well with the three-walled targets, however, the Panepinto pigs performed better on the
more difficult levels. One disadvantage for the Yorkshire pigs was that they simply grew so large that
they could no longer fit in their test. After a few months, Omelet and Hamlet were taken away from the
experiment.
Dr. Candace Croney, a leading animal behavior scientist in Cambridge, said, "The findings of the
study are important because what we do to pigs matters to them. It would be nice for people to realize
how special pigs are, and how much more intelligent they may be than we recognized. The researchers
said that the pig’s actions were deliberate. This led them to believe that pigs were able to successfully do
new tasks.
“It may encourage other researchers to use touch screens and computer technology to study pig’s
intelligence in the future,” Croney said. The team hopes this type of research will make people pay
more attention to this farm animal and show people how they can change the lives of animals.
28.What did the researchers do to the pigs at the beginning
A. They studied their habits B. They gave them enough food
C. They trained them to play a game D. They gave them special names
29.What could we find about the pigs in the experiment
A. They could keep focused for a long time
B. They tried hard to win the games for praise
C. They did all the tasks without any difficulty
D. They got harder tasks as their performance improved
30. What made Omelet and Hamlet unsuitable for the experiment later
A. Their weight B. Their body size C. Their power D. Their intelligence
31.What is Croney's attitude towards the results of the study
A. Positive B Doubtful C. Uncertain D. Surprised
D
Researchers studied 438 kids and their parents to know parents' influence on students' learning.
Before a school year started, the researchers asked parents to write down how anxious they would feel
in different situations connected with math-like planning their money spending or checking their house's
size. They also checked their children's math anxiety in a school year.
The study found kids whose parents were anxious about math learned less math over the school year.
And these kids didn't perform as well on the tests as those who hadn't been exposed to math anxiety.
Besides, these kids also were more likely to become nervous about math themselves. These kids will
“caught” that anxiety if their parents had often tried to help with their homework. This is an example of
good intentions having a bad result. The study's result appeared in Psychological Science. Erin Maloney
led the study. As someone who has personally experienced math anxiety, she says, “I was always very
nervous about math, not only taking tests but also learning the new concepts (概念). So I really tried to
balk at math, including finding excuses to miss math tests and not wanting to do math homework.” It was
only after she saw how math could be applied to her passion that she started to enjoy math.
However, parents with math anxiety should still support their kids as the kids work on math
homework. But they should know helping kids with schoolwork requires more than just going over facts
【孝感市普通高中协作体期中联合考试·高三英语试卷(共 8 页)第 5 页】
and concepts. Parents should help kids look for ways to have fun with math, like playing math-based
games. When kids have difficulty in learning, encourage them to bravely face it—but don't make them
nervous. What can students do if they're already nervous about math Maloney says, “My earlier study
showed that students who wrote down their fears of math before taking a math test performed better in
that test. After the writing process, many students said their fears weren't such a big deal.”
32. What were the 438 kids' parents asked to present
A. Their attitudes to school education. B. Their opinions on kids' math ability.
C. Their ways to solve kids' math anxiety. D. Their math anxiety levels in their daily life.
33. What result did Maloney’s team report in Psychological Science.
A. Kids are more likely to be afraid of math.
B. Some parents pay little attention to their kids' study.
C. Kids can pick up negative thoughts about math from their parents.
D. Parents should help with their kids' homework as little as possible.
34. What does the underlined phrase “balk at” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Enjoy. B. Avoid. C. Teach. D. Understand.
35. What advice would Maloney probably give to students on their math anxiety
A. Working closely with their math teachers.
B. Seeking help during their learning process.
C. Sparing some time to go over their notes daily.
D. Removing math anxiety by admitting it to themselves.

You may have many old books that you no longer want. There's no reason to allow them to gather
when others might be able to find a good use for them. 36
When you' re deciding what to do with old books, check their condition first. Check whether a
book has all of its pages, whether the cover is coming off, and whether the pages are dirty. 37 It
could also be given away to a charity.
If you plan to bring old books to a bookstore, remember to check the books' content too. 38
For example, storybooks usually catch bookstore owners' eye while travel guides don't. Bring books like
storybooks to a bookstore, and you'll have a bigger chance of having them sold.
If you choose to give old books to a charity, avoid giving books that are in poor condition. 39
Do not force the charity to reach the same decision as yours and crowd their recycling braes. It's
because if a book is quite dirty or damaged, a charity cannot sell it or give it out.
40 Choose some interesting old books and encourage your friends to take them and leave
some books of their own. You could also have a book party, where every visitor brings old books for
the others to look through and pick.
A. It’s also a great idea to sell old books online.
B. So work out ways to deal with the old books.
C. Book buyers know what they can find in the store.
D. Besides the two ways above, you can also exchange books with others.
E. If the book is in good shape, sell it to a used bookstore.
F. If you think the books should be recycled, then take action.
G. After all, some topics are of more interest than others.

During a vacation one year, my mom and I left our home. We went on a two-week trip to the
countryside where my mother had grown up. I was excited because I couldn't wait to see my
grandparents. The last time I had visited them was when I was only three years old. I also wished to
go sightseeing, ride elephants, and do many more things there. They must be very wonderful.
With great wishes, we arrived at my grandparents' house in the countryside. During the first several
days, I stayed in their house for fun. But soon, I got bored. I wondered what adventures were in store for
me. One morning I said to my mom, "I really want to go outside to play." My mom replied, "Stephanie,
today we're going to a school. The children there are studying in poor conditions. I decided to use some
of my own money to buy some school supplies (日用品) for them." Hearing that, I was a bit unhappy.
"We can go out and play another day. Today we need to spend a little time helping these poor children,"
Mom added. I had no choice but to agree.
A few minutes later, my mom drove me to the school. On the way, she said, "We'd first visit the
school to know what kind of things these children want most. Then we'll try to buy them." I thought to
myself: what a vacation I am having! I come here to go sightseeing, not do charity work.
When we reached the school, I just couldn't believe my eyes. There was only one small building,
which looked as if it were a hundred years old. There was no playground, no parking lot ... It was so
small; the school I went to back home was a million times bigger. How unlucky the children here were!
We met a teacher in the school, and my mom told him the purpose of our visit. The teacher was very
glad and thanked us.

部分解析:
32.D 解析:细节理解题。根据第一段中的“the researchers asked parents to write down...checking their house's size”可知,这些家长被要求提供他们日常生活中在不同情况下对数学的焦虑程度。
33.C 解析:推理判断题。根据第二段中的“kids whose parents were anxious about math learned less math... those who hadn't been exposed to math anxiety”可推断,孩子从父母那里得到了关于数学的负面想法,父母对数学的焦虑可能会影响孩子的数学学习。
34.B 解析:词义猜测题。根据第三段中的“I was always very nervous about math... including finding excuses to miss math tests...”可知,画线词后面列举的马洛尼找借口错过数学考试等行为说明,他尽力躲避学习数学。
35.D 解析:推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“...performed better on that test. After the writing process,... weren't such a big deal.”可知,马洛尼很可能会建议这些孩子通过承认内心对数学的焦虑来消除它。

第一节:
A Pleasant Outing
Last weekend, in order to help us students get relaxed, our class organized an outing and everyone took an active part
in it.
On the way, we saw so many amazing scenes that we took plenty of photos. On reaching the destination, we enjoyed
a delicious picnic first and then some students gave us wonderful performance they had prepared. Later, we played
interesting games happily .
This outing benefited us a lot. Not only did it bring us great pleasure but it also relieved pressure in our study.
Most importantly, the relationship between us also got strengthened.
第二节:
Paragraph 1
Then the teacher guided us into a classroom. The classroom was so small, but there were about
thirty children sitting in it, making it extremely crowded. I found most of the students wearing worn-out
clothes and having no school supplies except some old books and pencils. Immediately, I felt sympathy
for them. After the teacher introduced us to them and explained why we came here, all the children
were wild with joy and told us the things they had wanted for long, such as school bags, picture books,
new pencils and so on. My mom made a list of these things.
Paragraph 2
Holding the shopping list, my mom and I headed for a store. There I helped my mom pick up
the things on the list. To my mother’s surprise, I decided to buy something for the children using
my own pocket money, for which my mom praised me a lot. I also added some candies to our
supplies. These children were so grateful that they thanked us again and again when receiving the
gifts. Some of them started reading the picture books and sharing the candies right away. Seeing
their smiling face, I learned doing something meaningful for others could also be a wonderful thing.
