One night Peter received a call from his social worker asking, “Can you take in an 11-year-old boy just for the weekend ” It was just a few days after he had said goodbye to two brothers he was fostering (代养), so he told the social worker that his heart was deeply saddened by the loss of the two boys that had just been reunited with their birth parents. Peter thought he didn’t have enough energy left to care for another child at the moment. But the worker convinced him.
The social worker arrived at his home with the boy at 3:00 a.m. after driving two hours from another county. There is a huge shortage of foster families in Oklahoma so when a child enters the foster care system, social workers are often forced to place the children outside of the county of origin, often removing the child from the only place he or she has ever known. Additionally, older children are much more difficult to place.
Peter decided to ask why Anthony, the boy, was in foster care. Then he knew that the boy had been abandoned(抛弃)by his mother when he was 2. He was then placed with a family. But almost ten years later, the same family abandoned him at the hospital. Peter was shocked,“It’s like my life!”
The two have been together ever since. And on the 12th of November, Anthony finally got to share Peter's last name officially. However, Peter didn’t stop fostering kids. “It’s hard to be a single foster dad but it’s worth every minute of it. We are about to have another child next month and we are excited.”

A. Adopt another child. B. Find Anthony's birth parents.
C. Help more children go to school. D. Take Anthony to visit the social worker.

Have you ever heard of the deepest hole in the world Of course it's covered and shut, but it still sounds like a horror film to me. The entrance to the center of the earth sits among the ruins of an abandoned project site in Murmansk, Russia, not far from the Norwegian border. The deepest hole ever dug may be pretty unassuming, but I suspect I’m not alone in being a little freaked by it. An Internet search about the world’s deepest hole turns up the suggestion “Kola Superdeep Borehole screams”. No wonder locals call it the well to hell.
Before the very idea of a superdeep hole starts coming to your dreams 9 keep this in mind—the hole is only nine inches in diameter (that's about 23 centimeters). There’s no way you could fall into it. Known as the Kola Superdeep Borehole, the deepest hole ever dug reaches approximately 7.5 miles below the earth’s surface (or 12,262 kilometers), a depth that took about 20 years to reach.
The hole was intended to go was deep as possible”, which researches expected to be around 9 miles (that’s about 14,500 meters). But the scientists and engineers were forced to give up when they hit unexpectedly high temperatures. At 7.5 miles below the surface, the 2.7 billion-year-old rocks there reached temperatures of around 180 degrees Celsius. This was almost twice as hot as they’d predicted. Such high temperatures deform(使变形)the drill bits and pipes. The rocks themselves also become more malleable(可塑的). The Russian scientists in Kola described the rocks at those depths as behaving more like plastic than rock.
Since the drilling was stopped in 1992, and the project site was abandoned around a decade later, the Kola Superdeep Borehole has maintained the record for the deepest artificial point on earth. Humans have since dug longer boreholes, including the 12, 289-meter borehole drilled in the A1 Shaheen Oil Field in Qatar and the 12, 345-meter offshore oil well near the Russian island of Sakhalin. But the hole in Kola remains the deepest.
28. Where is the deepest hole in the world
A. In Norway. B. In China. C. In Qatar. D. In Russia.
29. What does the underlined word “freaked” in the first paragraph refer to
A. Excited. B. Worried. C. Frightened. D. Amazed.
30. Why did scientists give up digging the hole at about 7.5 miles below the surface
A. The rocks there were too hard.
B. The temperature there was too high.
C. They lacked proper tools to keep digging.
D. They needed more money to keep working.
31. When did scientists probably begin digging the Kola Superdeep Borehole
A. In 1972. B. In 1982. C. In 1992. D. In 2002.
D
A Canadian scientist might have found the earliest evidence of animal life on Earth.
Geologist Elizabeth Turner presented her findings in Nature in late July. Turner made her discovery in the rocks of the northwestern Canada. The area where she works has high mountains. But an estimated 890 million years ago, the area was under the sea.
There,Turner said she found the remains of sponges(海绵)preserved as minerals in rock. The rock contains structures that look like modern sponges that live in the world’s oceans. Dating of rock levels suggests that the rocks containing the structures are about 890 million years old. That would make them about 350 million years older than the oldest sponge fossils found during earlier studies. Discovering sponge fossils from close to 900 million years ago will improve our understanding of early animal life.
However, there is very little scientific agreement about things that happened one billion years ago. So other researchers will continue to examine and debate Turner’s findings. “I think she’s got a pretty strong case. It puts the evidence out there for other people to consider,” said David Bottjer, a paleobiologist at University of Southern California.
Scientists believe life on Earth appeared 3.7 billion years ago. The earliest animals appeared much later but exactly when is still debated. The oldest undoubtedly fossil sponges date to a time called the Cambrian period(寒武纪). Some scientists using a method called the molecular(分子)clock say evidence suggests sponges appeared around a billion years ago. The molecular clock method dates changes in living things based on the idea that genetic change takes place at a regular rate over long periods of time. But no supporting physical evidence for the first appearance of sponges had been found.
The time period of 890 million years ago is important. If the organism is confirmed as a sponge, the discovery would prove that the first animals developed before oxygen reached a level scientists thought was needed for animal life. But recent research suggests that some sponges can survive with little oxygen.
32. When did the oldest confirmed sponge fossils appear
A. Around 3, 700 million years ago.
B. Around 890 million years ago.
C. Around 540 million years ago.
D. Around 350 million years ago.
33. What do we know according to the text
A. Turner’s findings were gained under the sea.
B. David Bottjer was positive about Turner's study.
C. Most of sponges could live without oxygen.
D. The molecular clock method was used by Turner.
34. What is the best title for the text
A. The Animal Life in the Cambrian Period
B. The Understanding of Early Animal Life on Earth
C. The Debate on What Happened One Billion Years Ago
D. The Probable Earliest Animal Life Evidence on Earth
35. What is the author’s attitude to Turner’s discovery
A. Doubtful. B. Objective.
C. Approving. D. Amazed.

Different plants will grow well in different climates. 36 Or, to help the natural ecosystem improve, plan your garden with plants native to your area.
Native plants have spent a lifetime adapting to their natural environments, which means they don’t need much help to grow well in your garden. 37 These plants are also more likely to do well without the use of pesticides, keeping potentially harmful chemicals from entering the soil and groundwater.
Regional plants provide food and shelter for wildlife and a habitat for insects. As scientist Doug Tallamy said, “Native oak trees support over 500 species of caterpillars(毛虫)whereas ginkgos, a commonly planted landscape tree from Asia, host only 5 species of caterpillars.” The number of caterpillars affects the number of baby birds that will survive in the wild. 38
39 The National Wildlife Finder site finds plants based on your zip code. Once you enter your location, you’ll see pictures and descriptions of the kinds of plants native to your region. If you click on each plant, you'll also be able to research the wildlife a given plant supports.
To help you source and buy these plants, the site PlantNative provides a database of native nurseries where you can find plants specific to your region. 40 Such as, taking time to learn about your ecoregion, about how different species of plants will interact alongside one another, and building out your custom planting calendar.
A. You can grow plants that are not native to your area.
B. You’ll save yourself the effort of using plant food to stay healthy.
C. The best way to find plants native to your area is to use a plant locator site.
D. But before you rush out to buy a garden’s worth of native plants, take actions.
E. In fact, native plants can even naturally attract the insects necessary for their growth.
F. It’s why choosing native plants is important to keep the ecological balance of your area.
G. The site lists nurseries based on state groupings, as some states have similar climates.

There were three kids talking and laughing happily as they took turns riding a scooter(滑板车)on the quiet street. 11-year-old Dale had just jumped off the scooter as his neighbors Zoe, age 7, claimed her turn, and Julie, 9, looked on. Ten minutes later, Zoe sat down on the scooter to catch her breath. That was when a bearded man with a head of messy hair appeared. Without saying a word, the man picked Zoe up off the scooter and calmly stepped away.
The guy held Zoe gently like a baby and just walked down the street. In fact, the calm way the man behaved led Dale to believe that he must be a relative of Zoe’s. But something wasn’t right. “I could see Zoe’s face,” Dale said. “She was afraid.”
As the man walked on, Zoe’s fear transformed into weeps, and then she cried for help. She began kicking and moving, trying to get free of the man’s control. “What are you doing ” Julie shouted But the man, undisturbed, just walked on until he reached an alley(小巷)and disappeared.
Dale was frightened, yet he never thought about the danger to himself. The only thing he wanted to do was to get Zoe back. But what was a 4-foot-tall kid going to do to stop a grown man “I wanted to help but I couldn’t do it myself,” he thought to himself. “Tell Zoe’s parents, Julie!” He shouted as he started running towards the alley.

Dian Fossey was an American zoologist who studied gorillas in Africa. Her research and life in the mountain forests of Rwanda made her famous. She wrote a book about her work, Gorillas in the Mist, A major Hollywood studio paid her a million dollars for the movie rights. Her being killed in 1985 had to be added to the film. Fossey was born in 1932. She became interested in animals from a very early age. At university, she studied occupational therapy, which would help her later research. She became interested in Africa in her late twenties. She took out a loan and went to Tanzania, where she met the man who would change her life. Dr. Louis Leakey. Fossey was encouraged by Dr. Leakey to carry out long-term research on mountain gorillas. In 1967, she set up the Karisoke Research Centre in the remote Rwanda rainforest. She became internationally famous in 1970 after appearing on the cover of National Geographic magazine. It brought huge publicity for her campaign to protect the mountain gorillas and save them from disappearing.

That would make them about 350 million years older than the oldest sponge fossils found during earlier studies.”
根据第四段的“I think she’s got a pretty strong case. It puts the evidence out there for other people to consider”可知,David Bottjer很看好Turner 的发现。
根据第一段的“A Canadian scientist might have found…”,第四段的“However, there is very little scientific agreement about things that happened one billion years ago. So other researchers will continue to examine and debate Turner’s findings.”和第五段的“The earliest animals appeared much later but exactly when is still debated.”
36. A 根据下一句“Or, to help the natural ecosystem improve, plan your garden with plants native to your area”和下文可知,这里是说:你可以种植非本地的植物。
37. B 根据上一句“Native plants have spent a lifetime adapting to their natural environments, which means they don’t need much help to grow well in your garden.”
38. F 根据该段所举例子和上一句“The number of caterpillars affects the number of baby birds that will survive in the wild.”
41. C根据第三段首句中的“on the theater’s Facebook page”提示可知,Tom是通过社交媒体(social media)来寻找失主的。

have an effect on sth.
whether...or...
make a difference意为“起作用”,固定搭配。
