America is growing older. Fifty-eight years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the United States were 65 or older. Today, 10 out of every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect American society in many ways—education, medicine, and business. Quietly, the graying of America has made us a very different society—one in which people have a quite different idea of what kind of behavior is suitable at various ages.
A person’s age no longer tells you anything about his/her social position, marriage or health. There’s no longer a particular year in which one goes to school or goes to work or gets married or starts a family. The social clock that kept us on time and told us when to go to school, get a job, or stop working isn’t as strong as it used to be. It doesn’t surprise us to hear of a 29-year-old university president or a 35-year-old grandmother, or a 70-year-old man who has become a father for the first time. Public ideas are changing.
Many people say, “I am much younger than my mother—or my father—was at my age.” No one says “Act your age” any more. We’ve stopped looking with surprise at older people who act in youthful ways.
24.It can be learned from the text that the aging of the population in America ______
A. has made people feel younger
B. has changed people’s social position
C. has changed people’s understanding of age
D. has slowed down the country’s social development
25.The underlined word “one”refers to in the first paragraph ___________ .
A. a society B. America C. a place D. population
26.“Act your age” means people should _______________ .
A. be active when they are old
B. do the right thing at the right age
C. show respect for their parents young or old
D. take more physical exercise suitable to their age
27.If a 25-year-old man becomes general manager of a big firm, the writer of the text would most probably consider it ___________ .
A. Normal B. wonderful C. unbelievable D. unreasonable
C
Have you wondered why different animals or pests have their particular colors Colors in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.
Birds, especially seagulls are very fond of locusts (蝗虫), but birds can’t easily catch locusts because the colors of locusts vary with the colour of crops. When crops are green, locusts look green. But when crops are ripe, locusts take on exactly the same brown colour as crops have. Some other pests with different colors from plants are usually easily found and eaten by their enemies. So they have to hide themselves in terror for lives and only appear at night.
If you study the animal life in any part of the world, you will find the main use of coloring is to protect them. Bears, wolves and other beasts move quietly through forests. They are usually invisible(can’t be seen) to the eyes of hunters, because they have the colour much like the bark(树皮)of trees.
An even stranger act remains to be noticed. A kind of fish living in seas can send out a kind of very black liquid when it faces danger. While the liquid is over, its enemies cannot find it, and it quickly swims away. Thus, it has existed up to now though it is not powerful at all.
28. This passage mainly talks about _______.
A. the change of color in locusts
B. animals or pests can dye(染色)themselves different colors
C. how a certain sea fish protects itself
D. the protective color of animals and pests
29. Locusts are pests but they aren't easily wiped out by their enemies because_______.
A. they change colors with the crops B. they are dangerous to their enemies
C. they fly very fast D. they are powerful enough
30.The pests that have different colors from plants usually appear at night because _______.
A.they have the habit of coming out in darkness
B. their enemies can easily find them and eat them in the daytime
C. it's easy for them to destroy plants in darkness
D. birds take their rests when night comes
31. A certain fish living in seas has lived through millions of year because _______.
A. it is the most powerful in the sea
B. no other fishes can swim as fast as it can
C. it can send out a kind of liquid which makes its enemies unable to find it
D. the liquid it sends out can kill its enemies

Nothing could stop Dad. After he was put on disability for a bad back, he bought a small farm in the country, just enough to grow food for the family. He planted vegetables, fruit trees and even kept bees for honey. And every week he cleaned old man McColgin’s chicken house in exchange for manure(粪肥). The smell really burned the inside of your nose. When we complained about the terrible smell, Dad said the stronger the manure, the healthier the crops, and he was right. For example, just one of his cantaloupes filled the entire house with its sweet smell, and the taste was even sweeter.
As the vegetables started coming in, Dad threw himself into cooking. One day, armed with a basket of vegetables, he announced he was going to make stew(炖菜).Dad pulled out a pressure cooker and filled it up with cabbages, eggplants, potatoes, corns, onions and carrots. For about half an hour, the pressure built and the vegetables cooked. Dad turned off the stove. The pot began to cool and the pressure relief valve sprayed out a cloud of steam. If we thought Dad’s pile of chicken manure was bad, this was 10 times worse. When Dad took off the lid, the smell nearly knocked us out.
Dad carried the pot out and we opened doors and windows to air out the house. Just how bad was it The neighbors came out of their houses to see if we had a gas leak!
Determined, Dad filled our plates with steaming stew and passed them around. It didn’t look that bad, and after the first wave had shut down my ability to smell, it didn’t offend the nose so much. I took a taste. It would never win a prize in a cooking competition, but it was surprisingly good to eat, and we drank up every last drop of the soup.
32. Why did Dad clean old man McColgin’s chicken house regularly
A. To earn some money for the family. B. To collect manure for his crops.
C. To get rid of the terrible smell. D. To set a good example to us.
33. What can we infer about Dad’s stew
A. It is popular among the neighbors. B. It contains honey and vegetables.
C. It looks very wonderful. D. It tastes quite delicious.
34. What does the underlined word “offend” in the last paragraph mean
A. To attract B. To upset C. To air D. To shut
35. What can we learn about Dad from the text
A. He is an experienced cook. B. He is a troublesome father.
C. He has a positive attitude to life. D. He suffers a lot from his disability.

The office of the future will look quite different from the office of today. There will be big savings in space, because records will not to be kept on paper. Also, because things can be done at a much quicker pace, it’s likely that working hours will be much shorter. 36 A company can afford to pay workers more money, because it needs less stuff.
37 Are you a secretary, clerk, or a receptionist If you are, you should be worried by the changes that are going to take place. Because of information technology, your job may become unnecessary in the near future. You will certainly have to know more about using the computer. 38 Instead of doing just one of the three jobs mentioned above, it’s likely that a person will have to do all three. Because of this, there’s likely to be unemployment. While bosses will benefit because they can employ less people, thousands of office workers will find themselves out of work. 39 They will be forced to learn new skills which require the use of the computer to survive.
There may be some good points to the changes for workers as well as employers however. Government should benefit from IT and have more money to spend. Because of the increase in revenue(收入) caused by higher productivity, the government could afford to spend more on things such as social work, charities and culture. 40
A. However, not all the news is good.
B. Salaries are also expected to increase.
C. Even workers who can keep their jobs may have to suffer.
D. Their bosses will not want to employ them in a few years time.
E. Travel companies need to adopt IT to be competitive and survive.
F. Therefore, some who lose their office jobs may be able to work in these new areas.
G. And you will be expected to get a lot more information by using the computer than you did in the past

参考范文(总分25分)
Film or book, which do you prefer
Nowadays, many literary works are adapted into a movie. However, the two types are of great difference in some way.
Some of us think that it is better to see the film than to read the book in the original. The reason is that it takes less time to understand the whole story. Besides, the film is usually more interesting, and it is easier to follow.
Some others have just the opposite opinion. They think that they can get more detailed information from the original. Meanwhile, the language in the book is possibly more lively and beautiful.
Personally, I agree with the second view. Actually I have more reasons for it. I think I can stay at home, reading quietly in a situation of my own, and what’s more, I am able to better understand the author’s ideas. In a word, to read the original work is better than to see the film based on it.

Text 10
Let’s take a walk around the Entertainment Building now. The room we’re coming to is the main theater. This room screens videos of special interest and is also used for lectures. Today, there’s a continuous video about the people who are teaching in the university, so anyone who’d like to learn more about the life of those people living and working in the university will find that interesting. Next week, a student film festival is being hosted here.
Now we’re coming to the Picture Gallery. This collection is a great way to get a sense of what life on campus was like over the last 100 years, as well as all the various changes that happened with the growth of the university. There are many paintings and photos, all done by local artists. Some of them are now famous. It’s a great collection, and people think quite highly of it.
Well, I’m going to leave you now to walk around the university museum on your own for a while. Please make sure that you don’t touch anything, and remember that photography is not allowed. We’ll meet back at the entrance in an hour and a half. I hope you enjoy your time at the university today. Thank you.
