Here’s something to think about the next time you ask your teacher for help: do schoolwork on your own can help you learn. According to a recent study, the more you struggle while you are learning new information, the better you can remember it later.
It might surprise you. When teachers are presenting new information, they often give students lots of help. But a new study shows this may not be the best way to support learning. “Don’t be too quick to get help when learning something new,” education expert Manu Kapur said. “Try to work on it yourself even if it means trying different ways.”
Kapur came up with the idea that struggling can lead to better learning. Then he tested it out on students in Singapore. He separated students into two groups. In the first group, students were asked to solve math problems with the teacher’s help. In the second group, students were asked to solve the same problems by helping one another instead of getting help from the teacher.
With the teacher’s help, students in the first group were able to find the correct answers. Students in the second group did not solve the problems correctly, but they did come up with a lot of good ideas.
The students were then tested on what they had learned. The group without any help from a teacher scored much higher than the group who had help. Kapur said working to find the answers helped students understand the process, not just the solution.
Kapur’s advice for kids is to put a lot of effort into learning something new rather than going to your teacher for help. “Simply doing a little work or nothing at all won’t work,” says Kapur. “The struggle needs to be a real attempt to figure out or solve a problem in as many ways as possible.”
24. Which of the following is the best way to learn according to the passage
A. Figure something out on your own.
B. Ask teachers for help in time.
C. Be given the solution to the problem.
D. Pay little attention to the process.
25. Kapur supported his idea by ___________.
A. showing causes B. describing an activity.
C. making a test D. introducing a method .
26. In the last paragraph, Kapur advised students to ___________.
A. make efforts to win help from others
B. use their head in an active way
C. make an attempt at something new
D. work out every difficult problem
27. What would be the best title for the passage
A. Raise your head B. Try your hands
C. Stand on your own feet D. Work your mind

Within the explanations of Darwin's Theory of Evolution(进化论), the process of Natural Selection ensures that these genetic changes improve reproduction and it become more common from this generation to the next. Thus, many useful traits (特性) are passed on to the offspring (后代), More offspring are produced so that this process can work and ensure that the surviving offspring are the best ones to fit for the new environment.
In the end, these species begin to compete for survival among each other. Again, these natural processes of selection ensure that the one that is the fittest will survive. The species that cannot adapt or survive will die out in the end.
Several factors about a species tend to adapt during this process. These are height, weight, body hair and so on. Another trait that becomes important is the attractiveness of a species towards another. It ensures species to attract possible reproductive partners.
The process of adaptation takes place slowly within a species. Changing bone structures is one such process. For example, some bones become useless and disappear in the end. The tail bone (尾骨)of human beings is a good example of such a process. Darwin's theory and the lists of theories later on have resulted in several arguments. First of all, many people were against his ideas on the basis of their religious beliefs. They believed that it was something supernatural, like God, who had created man on the Earth. Darwin's theory, therefore, stands against their long held beliefs and systems of religious thought.
When Darwin first came out with his theory in1859, he faced a lot of opposition from not just the religious community(宗教团体), but also from the scientific community. However, later experiments of other scientists in the field have proved Darwin's theory to be true.
28. Which of the following makes "survival of the fittest" possible
A. Healthy parents.
B. The natural process of selection.
C. The new habitat or environment.
D. The process of adaptation.
29. During the mating season, some birds look more beautiful because________.
A. they want to attract their productive partners
B. they have stored enough nutrition in their body
C. they tend to change their outlook with seasons
D. they have to cover themselves with more feathers
30. Why does the author give the example of tailbone of humans
A. To show many parts of our body will disappear in the end.
B. To prove that adaptation takes place slowly within a species.
C. To explain why we should pay more attention to our health.
D. To tell us some parts of40ur body are of no use at all.
31. Many people were against Darwin's ideas because________.
A. hey had little knowledge about living things
B. these people all worked for the churches
C. Darwin's ideas were against religious beliefs
D. Darwin didn’t receive any help from scientists

Walk into the small Australian town of Coober Pedy on any day, and you will get the strange feeling of an ghost town. So why even call it a town Because that’s exactly what it is, complete with 4,000 plus citizens of 48 nationalities, all of whom live underground!
Coober Pedy was built in 1915, following the discovery of opal (蛋白石). As people from across the country and world came to mine the precious stone, they realized that while working under the ground was easy, living above it was not, because of the extreme temperatures.
In this case, it meant living underground, by changing old mines into homes and building the world’s only underground town.
As years have gone by, the homes have become bigger and more sophisticated (复杂巧妙的). There are now also several hotels to accommodate the tourists from all over the world, to see this unusual town. And while the structures may be located underground, they are as good as those that lie above. Not only do the underground town take full advantage of the beautiful red rock, but they also feature all the modern amenities(便利设施) like walk-in closets, modern kitchens and televisions. And if that is not enough, the town also has gift shops selling jewelry, a couple of museums and even a church! For those that need some physical activities, the town offers a golf course.
Besides being the capital of the world and a popular tourist destination, Coober Pedy is also a favorite among filmmakers and has been featured in movies such as Pitch Black, Red Planet and Opal Dream.

M: Good morning, everyone. It’s good to see you all here today. I believe some you once dreamed of becoming famous. I was one of you. Now I’d like to share my story with you. As a young actor, I first arrived in Los Angeles in 1984. I saw the shining lights of the city as the plane landed and I felt excited as the first step that would lead me to fortune got under way. I imagined that the development of my dream would move smoothly, and soon I would be one of the best-known faces on cinema screen throughout the world. I was confident in my first performance in 1986. I knew the lead role was perfect for me. I was anxious to become well-known. But when they offered me a small role, I saw that my plans for quick success had been ruined. Over the years I tried out for other roles, but I never got a good part. Sometimes I thought of giving up. Five years later, I found myself working in the offices of a movie company. And eventually I ended up as a manager of this company after years of hard work.
