For the brave in the army, being sent away from home is just part of the duty.
However, it’s never easy especially for those with children. So, when I found out I
was going to stay in South Korea for a year, I was nervous about how my five
children, particularly my eldest daughter Abigail, would take the news since it meant I
wouldn’t be home to see her graduate from high school.
To my surprise, Abigail told me not to worry and even suggested we make the
news known among family members. “We’ve been lucky you haven’t had to be sent
abroad yet. Anyway, we can get connected through the Internet. See me on your
phone.” Abigail said. She stepped into many of my roles when I was gone. I wanted
to find a way to thank her and show her how proud I was of her. I started planning the
special surprise when my request to return home a few weeks earlier to attend
Abigail’s graduation ceremony was agreed to.
When my time in South Korea finally came to an end, I flew home, and stayed
in a hotel. On Abigail’s graduation day, I hid in an office behind the stage waiting
until I heard her name called. I just kept thinking “Don’t cry. Don’t trip in your heels.
Don’t fall over.” At last! Abigail was up on stage. I slipped up behind her, whispered
in her ear, and around she turned! “I was just thinking, like, ‘You aren’t supposed to
be here. What What How ’ It was the biggest shock... I’m pretty sure my dad made
people he didn’t even know cry. Emotional for everyone.” Abigail cried.
You know what followed: embraces, kisses, tears, laughs, flowers, wishes...;
aren’t they what a family have in store

26.How did Abigail feel when meeting her father

There are a lot of names for people who travel the world—backpackers, tourists,
explorers, travelers. Labels (标签) are everywhere but seem especially popular among
高一英语
4
travelers trying to differentiate (区分) their styles of travel. For many travelers, these
labels make them feel better than another.
Andrew Zimmern from Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern once said, “Please
be a traveler, not a tourist. Try new things, meet new people, and look beyond what's
right in front of you. Those are the keys to understanding this amazing world we live
in.” The idea here is that travelers are better at exploring the world than tourists. They
dig deep into the culture, drink it up, and get to know a place while a tourist takes
pictures and declares to have “done Paris”.
But that's wrong. We are all tourists.
Out on the road, backpackers love to talk about how real their travel is and how
unreal tourists' are. “Look at those tourists over there,” they say. They scoff at others
who travel too quickly or to places that they think are not well worth visiting.
However, they do so while eating hamburgers and drinking beers with other
travelers.
The only way to really get to know a place deeply is to live there. If you want to
live like a local, find an apartment, get a job, go to work, and do the same things as
you do back home.
We are all only passing through a culture, getting a small taste before moving on
to the next place. Even if we stay weeks or months, we're just getting in touch with
the surface. As a matter of fact, we are all really just tourists, or explorers, or travelers.
Call yourself whatever you want—it's all the same as we're all trying to do the same
thing—see the world.
So don't label anyone and don't let anyone label you. We're all tourists. We're all
travelers. What we are all doing is more important than what we call ourselves. Let's
just enjoy the fact that we are simply people on the road.
28.The mention of Andrew Zimmern's words is to _____________ .
A.present amazing experiences
B.differentiate travelers from tourists

A.They live like locals while traveling.

D.They like calling themselves explorers.
31.What does the author suggest in the passage
A. Do important things.

The idea of turning recycled plastic bottles into clothing is not new. During the
past five years, a large number of clothing companies, businesses and environmental
organizations have started turning plastics into clothing to deal with plastic pollution.
But there’s a problem with this method. Research now shows that microfibers (微纤
维) could be the biggest source of plastic in the sea.
Dr. Mark Browne in Santa Barbara, California, has been studying plastic
pollution and microfibers for 10 years. He explains that every time synthetic (合成的)
clothes go into a washing machine, a large number of plastic fibers fall off. Most
washing machines can’t collect these microfibers. So every time the water gets out of
a washing machine, microfibers enter the sewer and finally end up in the sea.
In 2011, Browne wrote a paper stating that a single piece of synthetic clothing
can produce more than 1,900 fibers per wash. Browne collected samples (样本) from
seawater and freshwater sites around the world, and used a special way to examine
each sample. He discovered that every single water sample contained microfibers.
This is bad news for a number of reasons. Plastic can cause harm to sea life when
eaten. Studies have also shown that plastic can take in other pollutants.
Based on this evidence, it may seem surprising that companies and organizations
have chosen to turn plastic waste into clothing as an environmental “solution”. Even
though the science has been around for a while, Browne explains that he’s had a
difficult time getting companies to listen. When he asked well-known clothing
companies to support “Benign by Design”, his research project, which is trying to get
clothes that have a bad effect on humans and the environment out of the market,
Browne didn’t get a satisfying answer. Only one women’s clothing company, Eileen
Fisher, offered Browne funding.
32. What can we learn from the first paragraph
A. New microfibers have been discovered.
B. Making clothes from plastic bottles can’t reduce the pollution.
C. The use of plastic bottle has been reduced in the past five years.
D. Turning recycled plastic bottles into clothing hasn’t been put into practice.
33. What’s the main idea of the second paragraph
A. How to wash synthetic clothes.
B. How to prevent plastic pollution.
C. How microfibers end up in the sea.
D. Relationship between plastic pollution and microfibers.
34. How does Browne’s Benign by Design research project run
A. It has achieved great success.
B. It is facing some difficulties.
C. It is known to very few people.
D. It hasn’t got anything done.
35. What’s the best title for the text
A. Recycled plastic clothing: solution or pollution

However, these arguments are often over quickly.

As a family member, you should find out what it really means when your parents
fight. When your parents get upset with each other, they might cry or say things they
don’t really mean. Most people lose their cool now and then, so if your parents are
fighting, don’t worry too much about it.
