Possible version1:
Later Dad came in with excitement. “Where's your spelling paper, Karie ” Dad asked eagerly. Karie looked away from her father and reluctantly pulled out the test paper from her backpack. Dad fixed his eyes on the paper, a pleasant smile lifting the corner of his mouth. “I'm proud of you, sweetie.” A sense of guilt rose inside Karie, which made her breathless. She told Dad the truth eventually. To her relief, Dad hugged her tightly and praised her for her honesty. Then she made a big decision.
The next morning, Karie went to school earlier than usual. Ms. McCormack was unlocking the classroom. “You're an early bird.” Ms. McCormack said. Karie's hands trembled. She handed her teacher the spelling paper and the dictionary. “I can't keep this. I misspelled ‘honestly’ and you didn't find it.” For a moment, Ms. McCormack stood quietly reading the label on the dictionary. Then picking up her pen, she crossed out the word “perfect” and wrote “honest” before returning the dictionary to Karie. “Keep this. For honesty.”
Possible version 2:
Later Dad came in with excitement. “Where's your spelling paper, Karie ” Dad asked eagerly. Karie looked away from her father. Anyhow, she reluctantly went to her room and pulled out the test paper. Dad fixed his eyes on the paper, a pleasant smile lifting the corner of his mouth. “I'm proud of you, sweetie. We need to celebrate it tonight.” Karie pretended to be smiling all the time. Meanwhile a sense of guilt rose inside her. Feeling she didn't deserve the prize, she had a sleepless night for the first time in her life.

Text 10
There is a new trend starting in the United States of America that is being called “healthcare tourism”. Instead of people going on vacation to sightsee or explore, they are traveling outside of the country in order to find doctors for much cheaper than they could in the USA. (17) (18) Though many people have healthcare through their jobs, others do not have any. Healthcare costs are the leading cause of why most people become poor in the United States. (19) If a person is injured and has to see a doctor or go to the hospital, it will cost a lot of money if you do not have insurance. America has very educated doctors, but that also means they get paid a lot. The system is also very fast to get patients to see doctors, but that is also part of the cost. That is not to say other countries cannot be fast, or have educated doctors. Americans have recently participated in this trend because they have realized that America is not the only country that has advanced healthcare. Many Americans are traveling to countries like Mexico or Spain for surgeries that would cost them a fortune in their home country. According to a recent survey done by the website Patients Beyond Borders, India and Malaysia are where patients can save the most. (20) I think these countries are where most people would go if they needed a big surgery.
Besides, you can see every day’s newspapers here. If you’d like the newspaper to be sent to your
room each morning, please tell the people at reception. Reading is encouraged. There are lots of
books in the library, all of which can be borrowed free of charge.

When the COVID-19 hit and supermarket shelves were empty, Chris Hall and Stefanny Lowey decided they no longer wanted to rely on others for food. The couple, who live on Pender Island in British Columbia, Canada, decided to start a year-long challenge where they wouldn't buy a single thing to eat. Instead, they would grow, raise or catch everything—right down to sugar, salt and flour. Now, five months in, they say the challenge has changed their lives.
Chris, 38, said, “It has always been something that we have wanted to do. We have had a garden and grown vegetables for a long time already. When the COVID-19 hit, it gave us that extra push that we needed to do it. We were both out of work when we started, and with the reality check of grocery stores running out of items, it gave us even more motivation to see if we could look after ourselves.”
The pair spent the months before building a house for chickens, ducks and turkey as well as studying as much as possible to figure out where they would get all the things they needed. Chris adds, “We had to learn so many new things like how to grow mushrooms, process our Stevia plants, and harvest salt from the ocean. We spent a lot of time reading and studying online to figure out all the things we were going to need to do.”
Now after two months, they both feel it's been going well but Chris admits the first few weeks were difficult. “The first three weeks were very challenging as our bodies adjusted to cutting out coffee, wine and sugar all on the same day,” he says. “After three weeks, our energy levels balanced out and our wishes reduced and now we feel great.” Now February has ended. As they come through winter, they feel positive about continuing with this way of living, with their challenge officially ending in November.

The town of Paradise has suffered a camp fire, which lasted 17 days and caused a damage of $16. 5 billion. As a result, the beautifully named place lost its beauty.
Shane Grammer, a creative director for Disney's theme parks in Los Angeles, paid close attention to the news of the fire. He felt quite helpless when seeing the pictures shared by his childhood friend Shane Edwards in the town, in which Shane photographed his white chimney, the only part of his house left after the fire.
"I've got to paint that chimney," he said to Inside Edition. "I'm not trying to say anything. And it was an opportunity for me to express and be an artist, wasn't it "
Grammer spent three hours spray-painting the image of a woman on the chimney, which is strikingly mysterious black and white, in the ruins. Perhaps it serves as a reminder of the beauty of life or just life itself. Then Grammer put the picture on Instagram. On seeing it, the victims of the fire could not contain themselves." Beautiful and impressive," one of them commented. And another said," You bring beauty and hope."
At this time, Grammer became aware that something deeper had been transformed by a purely artistic expression. "When the first mural (壁画) moved so many people, I knew I had to come back up," he said to KRCR-TV. Grammer returned to Paradise eight times in three months, during which he completed 17 paintings of victims and other figures.
Today, Grammer's efforts have developed into a movement. He has also painted murals in dark places that seriously need some light around the world.
Ironically, the first painting, on the chimney in Paradise, existed for just several months, since the bulldozer (推土机) is a merciless art critic. But Grammer couldn't be more pleased about it, which means the spirit of Paradise is rising again.
28. How did Grammer come up with the idea of painting the chimney
A. From Disney's theme parks.
B. From his friend's description of the fire.
C. After learning about the news of the fire.
D. By looking at a picture of Shane Edward's remaining chimney after the fire.
29. What do Grammer's murals mean to people
A. They are inspiring. B. They are mysteries.
C. They are entertaining. D. They are just artistic expressions.
30. What does the underlined part "something deeper" in Paragraph 5 refer to
A. People's words. B. People's inner feelings.
C. The background situation. D. The meaning of the mural.
31. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Paradise is recovering from the disaster.
B. The people in Paradise are all happy now.
C. Grammer is not happy for the destruction of his mural.
D. The bulldozer was so cruel that it destroyed Grammer's mural.

A national engineering laboratory in Tianjin is the base of the world’s largest and most advanced sound source identification system for commercial use. At first glance, the equipment, known as a sound camera and consisting of a big wheel with a supporting frame, is similar to a mini Ferris wheel that lacks seats and cannot rotate. A closer look at the 5-meter-diameter wheel reveals high-tech features like an array of 144 sensors(传感器)used to capture, identify and analyze the source of noise on railways. “It is like a sound radar(雷达)for discovering noise,” said Hu Wenlin, vice head of the National Engineering Laboratory for Noise Control and Reduction at China Railway Design Corporation.
Hu said that the data produced by the machine allows engineers to better understand the sounds generated when a train passes by, such as which part produces the most noise. After analyzing the data, engineers can draw up precise plans to reduce noise and make construction plans accordingly. For example, if a railway passes a residential area with stricter noise abatement requirements, engineers can come up with a plan to minimize noise, usually at greater expense. But if a railway passes a place with more relaxed noise control requirements, designers can make a cheaper plan.
Noise control technologies have been applied to dozens of major railway projects across the country. The sound camera, fully developed in China, is advanced by world standards, said Wang Changjin, the director of the National Engineering Laboratory. Before the sound camera was available, engineers usually used a pole fitted with sensors to collect sound data along railway lines. “It cannot be compared to the technique we are using now, which is far more accurate,” Wang said.
The machine is just one of many innovations developed by the laboratory. It has conducted many research projects on railways, leading to the development of key noise control equipment for high-speed railways and bringing quieter lives to people living near the lines.
32. What can we know about the sound camera from paragraph 1
A. It is invented by Hu Wenlin.
B. It is a sound radar in the shape of a wheel.
C. It is fitted with many sensors to study noise.
D. It transforms sound information into images.
33. What does the underlined word “abatement” probably mean
A. Increasing. B. Ranking. C. Reducing. D. Analyzing.
34. What highlights the sound camera according to paragraph 3
A. It is very easy to move. B. It consumes little energy.
C. It is available for everyone. D. It operates far more accurately.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. Technology Frees People from Noise
B. Sound Camera Makes Rail Lines Quieter
C. The Importance of Conducting Sound Research
D. The Influence of Noise Pollution on People’s Life
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
We use both words and body language to express our thoughts and opinions in our interactions with other people. Words are important. 36 The way people stand, hold their arms, and move their hands can also give us information about their feelings.
37 The crucial thing is using body language in a way that is appropriate to the culture you are in. For example, making eye contact—looking into someone’s eyes—in some countries is a way to display interest. 38 For example, in many Middle Eastern countries, men and women are not socially permitted to make eye contact. In Japan, it may demonstrate respect to look down when talking to an older person.
The gesture for “OK” has different meanings in different cultures. In Japan, someone who witnesses another person employing the gesture might think it means money. In France, a person encountering an identical gesture may interpret it as meaning zero. 39
Some body language has many different uses. Perhaps the best example is smiling. A smile can help us get through difficult situations and find friends in a world of strangers. 40 We can use a smile to apologize, to greet someone, to ask for help, or to start a conversation. Experts suggest smiling at yourself in the mirror to make yourself feel happier and stronger. And if we are feeling down or lonely, there is nothing better than seeing the smiling face of a good friend.
A. A smile can break down barriers.
B. Smile is a kind of attitude to our life.
C. Body language is a part of nonverbal language.
D. In other countries, by contrast, eye contact is not always approved of.
E. Just like spoken language, body language varies from culture to culture.
F. But we can also learn a lot about what people are thinking by watching their body language.
G. However, you should avoid making this gesture in Brazil and Germany, as it is not considered polite.

An honest mistake
Karie double-checked the words on her spelling test. If she got 100 points today, she'd win her class' First-Quarter Spelling Challenge and a brand-new dictionary. Plus, Ms. McCormack had promised to do a handstand(倒立)if anyone got a perfect score.
Three more words to go. N-i-c-e-l-y. Q-u-i-c-k-l-y. H-o-n-e-s-t-y. Wait! She'd spelled honesty, not honestly. She hurriedly erased the t-y and wrote l-y before handing in her paper.
Ms. McCormack graded the test papers at the break. Meanwhile, Karie sat restlessly in her seat with her fingers crossed. Then, Ms. McCormack walked to the front of the room and cleared her throat. As if she were an Olympic gymnast, Ms. McCormack's feet flipped into the air.
“Congratulations, Karie! You did it!” she announced while upside down.
The whole class burst into applause! Ms. McCormack righted herself and presented Karie with her prize. Karie grinned as she read the label on the box:
To Karie Carter, for her perfect first-quarter score in spelling.
“Everything OK ” Mom asked as Karie burst through the front door after school. Karie didn't answer. As if by magic, she took out her spelling test paper and prize and showed them to her mother. Mom hugged her, asking her to put the test paper on the fridge so that Dad could see it when he got home.
Karie took another look at the test paper before putting it on the fridge. Her hands stopped in mid-air. She just couldn't believe her own eyes. Honestly
YES! H-O-N-E-S-L-Y!
Mom sensed something unusual and asked why. Karie stuffed(塞进)the test paper into her backpack and explained that she was just too excited. Mom brought her some tea. Yes, a “t” was exactly what she needed.
After drinking a little, Karie plodded(吃力地行进)down the hall, lost in thought. How could she tell the class she hadn't earned the prize after all and that Ms. McCormack did the handstand for nothing
