Finding a suitable name for a baby is a big deal in China. When picking out a Chinese name, parents usually select two or three characters that have a carefully thought out meaning, but when deciding on an English name, many of them struggle. That’s where Jessup and her company, Special Name, come in. In the last few years, Jessup has helped name 677, 900 Chinese babies, and earned over $400, 000 in the process, more than enough to pay her college fees.
Jessup came up with the idea for Special Name in 2015, after accompanying her father on a business trip to China. One of her dad’s business partners, a Mrs. Wang, asked her to help choose an English name for her daughter. Jessup felt glad and quickly realized the importance of choosing a proper name in Chinese culture. The woman wanted people to be surprised by the things her daughter could achieve, so Jessup suggested the name “Eliza” after the character Eliza Doolittle from the play Pygmalion. Mrs. Wang seemed delighted with Jessup’s choice. “If Mrs. Wang needed this service, maybe other parents would as well,” Jessup thought.
After returning to UK, Jessup borrowed 1,500 from her parents and paid a web designer to build a website. She then spent her free time filling up a database(数据库)with around 4, 000 English names, associating them with five major personality characteristics, like honesty and optimism.
In the beginning, Jessup offered the service for free to promote the website, but later, she started charging fees. The business is almost completely self-sufficient, requiring only a small team in China that manages technical operations. She updates the database each month, allowing her to focus full-time on studies.
21. What’s the purpose of Special Name
A. To help Chinese teens go abroad. B. To strengthen children’s personalities.
C. To pick an English name for a Chinese baby. D. To make a deal with Chinese parents.
22. What inspired Jessup to set up Special Name
A. A suggestion from a business partner. B. Her interest in Chinese culture.
C. A Chinese mother’s request. D. A character from a play.
23. What can we infer from the last paragraph about Special Name
A. It offers free service. B. It’s updated every day.
C. It’s operated completely by itself. D. It is easy to manage.

Americans use many expressions with the word “dog”. People in the United States love their dogs and treat them well. They take their dogs for walks, let them play outside and give them good food and medical care. However, dogs without owners to care for lead a different kind of life. The expression to lead a dog s life” describes a person who has an unhappy life.
Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world. That means many people are competing for the same things, like good jobs. They say that to be successful, a person has to work like a dog. The hard work can make people dog-tired. And, the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog.
Still, people say every dog has its day. This means that every person enjoys a successful period during his or her life. To be successful, people often have to learn new skills. Yet, some people say that you can never teach an old dog new tricks. They believe that older people do not like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things.
Husbands and wives use doghouse when they are angry at each other. For example, a woman might get angry at her husband for forgetting their wedding anniversary(结婚周年纪念).She might tell him that he is in the doghouse and treats him badly. However, the husband may decide that it is best to leave things alone and not create more problems. He might decide to let sleeping dogs lie.
Dog expressions are also used to describe the weather. The dog days of summer are the hottest days of the year. A rainstorm may cool the weather. But we do not want it to rain too hard. We do not want it to rain cats and dogs.
24. What does the underlined expression “work like a dog” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Become successful. B. Have an unhealthy life.
C. Compete for the same things. D. Work very, very hard.
25. If a man comes home late and makes his wife annoyed, what might his wife say
A. It will rain cats and dogs. B. Every dog has its day.
C. You lead a dog’s life D. You are in the doghouse.
26. Which of the following has the same meaning as “leave things untouched”
A. Become sick as a dog. B. Teach an old dog new tricks.
C. Let sleeping dogs lie. D. Make people dog-tired
27. What does the text mainly talk about
A. Expressions in American culture. B. Some expressions with the word dog.
C. A good way to learn English well. D. Dogs’ influence on American culture.

With intelligence systems and New Age networks, life in the big cities will likely be happier and more efficient (有效率的). After all, more than 60 percent of the world’s population is expected to live in cities by 2050, according to a UN report. The answer to making these cities more livable for so many people lies in creating “smart” cities. They will use 5G networks and the Internet of Things (LOT) to make everyday life safer and more convenient. Some cities are already using smart technology to improve the lives of their people.
But what exactly does a smart city do Let’s s look at a few examples. In United States cities of Boston and Baltimore, sensors (传感器) in smart rubbish cans can tell cleaning workers how full they are and when they need to be emptied. In Amsterdam, the Netherlands, traffic flow and energy usage are kept track of and adjusted (调节) according to real-time data collected from sensors around the city. And in Copenhagen, Denmark, a smart bike system allows riders to check on air quality and traffic jams as they ride.
Smart cities will be interactive (互动的), allowing their people to fed like they’re truly shaping their environment, instead of only living in it. It’s very important that we can actually communicate with our environment in a way that we never had in the past. Smart cities will also allow us to save resources. By using sensors and 5G networks to watch over the use of water, gas and electricity, city managers can figure out how to share and save these resources more efficiently.
Of course, it will take time and money to turn our present cities into the smart cities of the future. But as we’ve already seen, more cities around the world are already using smart technology in small ways. It won’t be long before more cities start to develop their own smart systems.
28. What makes it necessary to create smart cities
A. The development of present cities. B. The increasing population in cities.
C. The wide use of 5G networks and IOT. D. The growing number of present cities.
29. How do smart rubbish cans help
A. By adjusting the cans’ position. B. By keeping track of the air quality.
C. By emptying the rubbish by themselves. D. By reminding the workers to clean them.
30. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. How smart cities work. B. The future of smart cities.
C. The influence of 5G on smart cities. D. How smart cities communicate with us.
31. What is the authors attitude to smart cities
A. Supportive. B. Worried. C. Uninterested. D. Doubtful.

When I was seven, I found a watch while walking down the hallway of my school. The watch was expensive- looking, set with gold. As I picked it up, greedy(贪欲)suddenly came over me, and instead of turning it into the office like I should have, I became the owner of the watch.
When I got home from school, I found Mom cooking dinner in the kitchen. 1’hinking that she would be impressed, I held out my prize for her to see with a feeling of excitement and pride. Mom, however, was far from impressed. Instead, she was angry at her son keeping the watch instead of turning it in. Mom then ordered me to go straight back to school and lake the watch to someone at the office. I started to argue, but after taking a good look at the expression on Mom’s face, I realized that would get me nowhere. There was nothing left for me to do but obey (服从).
I have to admit, I was rather angry with Mom for making me give up the watch. I felt that it was justly mine since I was the one who had found it. Yes, I knew she was right, but greed had forced me to keep the watch, and now pride wouldn’t allow me to admit that I had done something wrong. But time passed, and I forgot all about the lesson that I learned from the watch until fourteen years later.
While I was attending college, I had managed to get a job at a Walmart pushing carts off the parking lot. One morning, I found a checkbook(支票簿)that had been left in a shopping cart. Quickly, I took it to the customers service desk and gave it to the employee there so that the customer who had lost it could pick it up.

73.续写
Later, as I was outside pushing carts, a man came up to me. He told me his wife had left their checkbook in a shopping cart the night before, and he wondered if it had been found. When he told me his name, I realized that he was the owner of the checkbook I had found. I explained to him that Td found his checkbook that morning, and that he could go inside and get it at the service desk. The man was so thankful that he pulled out his wallet and offered me some cash, but I refused.
Then my thoughts went back to the day when Mom had made me return the watch. Mom wanted to make sure that her son would always be honest, and never take what didn91 belong to him. Because of her, I did the right thing when I found that checkbook, and I was rewarded with a feeling of self-worth that no amount of money could buy. I have come to realize that while we are growing up, some valuable lessons are often the ones that we don’t appreciate until later in life.

Text 10
W: Dear Shirley,
I’m writing to you on behalf of London Teenagers’ Help. Our group is an organization that raises donations for children who suffer in natural disasters. We have been working to help make a difference in their lives.
A few days ago, great floods attacked Bangladesh killing at least 242 people, destroying crops and houses. At least 5,000 were injured and 186,000 were left homeless. The suffering of the people is extreme. They are badly in need of clothes, shelters and schools.
Today, we do hope that you would be kind enough to help those children by sending the most generous donation. We look forward to whatever support you can provide. Thank you in advance for your generosity and kind support.
If you want more information about our organization, you may visit www. Reading London teenagers online or contact us by phone at 88909998. You can make a donation online.
Yours, Sarah
