Open water swimming
I had only swum in open water a few times, and always in gentle lakes, so I wasn’t prepared for how rough Lake Windermere appeared on a cold day. A swimmer told me the water felt colder than it had been measured, and that the water was a bit rough. But I, along with 10,000 others, was about to complete the challenge.
Most of the people taking part were doing a one-mile race, and 10 races were planned over the weekend. There seemed to be a mix of open-water enthusiasts alongside complete beginners—which is precisely the aim of the swims, to get as many people as possible completing their own challenge. The oldest woman competing was 77, taking part in the two-mile race, alongside a man who last year had swum in every one-mile race.
I had chosen the third one-mile race of the day. There were over 600 people in my race. We were taken through an acclimatization area, a children’s paddling pool-sized part of the lake where we moved in to feel how cold the water was. “Not too bad” was everyone’s thought! Then we headed out towards the middle of the lake.
We’d been warned that the first 100 metres would be really rough. However, somewhere near the 750m mark I was still waiting for the calm; it felt more like swimming in the sea than a lake. I tried to focus on my breathing and technique, and just keep going. As I approached the 400m-to-gomark my lower right leg became painful. I recalled overhearing people talking about how they kept swimming through the pain, so I tried. But it didn’t work. I began to feel the entire leg tight and painful. I didn’t want to stop, so I bent my right knee and just kicked with the left leg.
Finally I saw the finishing post, and I just concentrated on getting there—still one-legged. My finishing time was 38 minutes 25 seconds but that didn’t matter—the atmosphere was fantastic and everyone felt a sense of achievement, whatever their time. I’m hooked, and want to give it another go. I’ve already signed up for my next open-water swim.
4. What does the word ROUGH in the first paragraph means
A. wild B. good C. pleasant D. calm
5. How did the author feel before the race
A. Scared(恐惧的) B. Disappointed
C. Happy D. Determined(坚定的)
6. The author suggests in Paragraph 4 that ______.
A. the race would cause breathing problems
B. the race became harder than she had expected
C. it was really necessary to prepare for tough swims
D. it would have been easier if she had taken others’ advice
7. What does the author talk about in the last paragraph
A. Her confidence in her own ability.
B. Her eagerness to repeat the experience.
C. Her pride in having swum so quickly.
D. Her surprise at having managed to finish.
A 5. D 6. B 7. B
根据第一段第一句“I had only swum in open water a few times, and always in gentle lakes, so I wasn’t prepared for how rough Lake Windermere appeared on a cold day. ”(我只在开阔的水域游泳过几次,而且总是在平缓的湖泊里游泳,所以我完全没有料到在寒冷的日子温德米尔湖会如此汹涌。)可知句中的rough应该是和gentle相对的,描述波浪的词汇。结合下一句“A swimmer told me the water felt colder than it had been measured, and that the water was a bit rough. ”(一位游泳者告诉我,水感觉比测量的要冷,而且水有点汹涌。)根据本句中的水冷,可知应该是汹涌的,狂暴的,和wild词义接近。故选A。
根据第一段最后一句“But I, along with 10,000 others, was about to complete the challenge.”(但我和其他10000人即将完成这项挑战。)
根据文章第四段“We’d been warned that the first 100 metres would be really rough. However, somewhere near the 750m mark I was still waiting for the calm; it felt more like swimming in the sea than a lake. I tried to focus on my breathing and technique, and just keep going. ”(我们被警告说前100米会很艰难。然而,在750米标记附近的某个地方,我仍在等待平静;感觉更像是在海里游泳,而不是在湖里。我试着专注于我的呼吸和技术,继续前进。)可知作者在第4段中表明比赛比她预期的要困难。故选B。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段最后两句“I’m hooked, and want to give it another go. I’ve already signed up for my next open-water swim.”(我上瘾了,想再试一次。
C
The idea of growing food in a desert would make most people laugh but this is quickly becoming a reality. There are currently two desert farms in the world where quality vegetables are being planted cheaply and easily.
Sundrop Farms, based in South Australia, uses experimental greenhouses to grow tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. The biggest challenge of growing food in a desert, obviously, is the lack of available water. The researchers at Sundrop Farms have gotten around this problem by using the sun to desalinate (淡化) sea water. It can also be used to control the temperature of the greenhouses.
Without depending on limited resources such as land and fresh water Sundrop Farms has made farming a practice. This can increase the world’s food supplies. Another benefit of this kind of farming is that it can be done anywhere, thus reducing the costs of transporting food to distant locations. Yet another benefit is that it reduces the need for pesticides (杀虫剂).
Another experimental desert farm is the Sahara Forest Project, which began in Qatar in December 2012. Greenhouses in the farm are cooled by saltwater. Solar power and other technologies are used together to help make vegetation (植被) grow in the desert environment. As deserts have expanded over recent years around the world due to global warming, this project could solve the problem.
The result form the Qatar project were better than expected and in June of 2014, Jordan agreed to host another one. This will be much bigger than the Qatar project and the project members will have even more opportunities to test their experiments on a much larger scale. It is not clear yet that desert farming resents the future of farming but these projects have shown some success in the field.
8. What does “this problem” in paragraph 2 refer to
A Sea water is bard to purify.
B. The desert is short of water.
C. The temperature is high in the desert.
D. Desert farms aren’t fit to plant vegetables.
9. What is one of the characters of desert farming
A. It needs more pesticides. B. It saves delivery costs.
C. It has a location limit. D. It solves food waste problems
10. What can we know about the Sabara Forest Project
A. It lives up to expectations
B. It can help produce more food
C. It is started to prevent global warming
D. It uses technology to produce saltwater
11. What can be inferred about desert farming from the last paragraph
A. It still has problems to solve.
B. It represents the future of farming.
C. Its early success has aroused interest in it.
D. Its aim is to create more job opportunities.
B 9. B 10. A 11. C
根据文章第二段划线词前句“The biggest challenge of growing food in a desert, obviously, is the lack of available water.(在沙漠中种植粮食的最大挑战,显然是缺乏可用的水。)”
根据文章第三段“Another benefit of this kind of farming is that it can be done anywhere, thus reducing the costs of transporting food to distant locations. (这种农业的另一个好处是它可以在任何地方进行,从而降低了将食物运送到遥远地方的成本。)”可知,沙漠农业可以在任何地方进行,进而减少食物运送成本。故选B。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第五段“The result form the Qatar project were better than expected (卡塔尔项目的结果好于预期。)” 故选A。

和“It is not clear yet that desert farming resents the future of farming but these projects have shown some success in the field.( 目前还不清楚沙漠农业是否会影响农业的未来,但这些项目已经在这一领域取得了一些成功。)”
D
Climate forecast for 2050: cold London will be hot and dry like Barcelona, wet Seattle will be like drier San Francisco, and Washington D. C. will be more like today’s Nashville but with even greater changes in temperatures.
“We wanted to know what the climate will be for 520 major cities in 2050,” said Tom Crowther, a researcher at ETH Zürich. To show their findings the Crowther Lab in Switzerland created a map that pairs one city’s future climate conditions with current (当前的) ones. For example, Minneapolis in 2050 will be more like Kansas City, with Minneapolis’s warmest month shooting up from around 80 degrees Fahrenheit on average to more than 90° F in 2050. Generally speaking, cities in the northern half of the earth will have the climates cities more than 620 miles to their south have today, he said.
There are no good pairings for more than 22 percent of the world’s major cities — those with one million or more people now, researchers found. Those 115 cities, including Washington and 16 other U.S. cities, will have unprecedented (前所未有的) climate conditions by 2050 compared to what they saw in 2000, the baseline for the study. That doesn’t mean that Washington will be hotter than Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, today. It means that there is no current match for the wide climate changes in temperatures and rainfall the city will experience, said Crowther. Most of the 115 cities that will experience “novel” climates are in the tropics (热带地区) and include cities like Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Rangoon, and Singapore. Changes in tropical cities will be less in terms of temperature increases, but will have more rain.
The study talked about climate in ways that will be more meaningful to the public and city planners. Knowing that London’s climate will be like Barcelona’s — which has experienced serious droughts requiring $25 million to buy drinking water from other countries in 2008 — can help planners prepare for what’s coming.
12. What will Seattle’s climate be like in 2050
A. It will be less wet. B. It will be cold but dry.
C. It will be drier than today’s San Francisco. D. It will be the same as today’s Washington D.C.
13. What is the Crowther Lab trying to do
A. To mark 520 major cities on a map.
B. To show a city’s future climate using a current city.
C. To put today’s cities with similar climates in pairs.
D. To compare the northern half of the earth with the southern half.
14. Which city’s temperature will change less from now to 2050
A. Minneapolis. B. Riyadh. C. Jakarta. D. Kansas City.
15. What’s the importance of the study
A. Make the public realize the danger. B. Stop London’s situation from getting worse.
C. Help Barcelona out of difficulty. D. Get city planners to think ahead.
A 13. B 14. C 15. D
根据第一段“Climate forecast for 2050: cold London will be hot and dry like Barcelona, wet Seattle will be like drier San Francisco”(2050年的气候预报:寒冷的伦敦会像巴塞罗那一样又热又干,潮湿的西雅图会像干燥的旧金山)可知,西雅图在2050年,气侯会变干燥,不会那么潮湿,故选A。
根据第二段““We wanted to know what the climate will be for 520 major cities in 2050,” said Tom Crowther, a researcher at ETH Zürich. To show their findings the Crowther Lab in Switzerland created a map that pairs one city’s future climate conditions with current (当前的) ones.”(“我们想知道2050年520个主要城市的气候会怎样,”ETH Zürich的研究员Tom Crowther说。为了展示他们的发现,瑞士Crowther实验室绘制了一幅地图,将一个城市的未来气候条件与当前气候条件配对。)可知,Crowther实验室创建了用现在气候来描绘未来城市气候状况的一个地图,试图用现在的城市气候来展示未来城市的气候状况。故选B。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Most of the 115 cities that will experience “novel” climates are in the tropics (热带地区) and include cities like Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Rangoon, and Singapore. Changes in tropical cities will be less in terms of temperature increases, but will have more rain.”(115个将经历“新奇”气候的城市中,大多数位于热带,包括像吉隆坡,雅加达,仰光和新加坡这样的城市。
根据最后一段“The study talked about climate in ways that will be more meaningful to the public and city planners. Knowing that London’s climate will be like Barcelona’s — which has experienced serious droughts requiring $25 million to buy drinking water from other countries in 2008 — can help planners prepare for what’s coming.”(这项研究是以对公众和城市规划者更有意义的方式讨论了气候问题。

A long time ago, there was a happy prince and princess in a country. They took care of and loved each other very much, and their country was happy, too. Therefore they didn't envy anything else. There was one thing they worried about. They wanted to make sure they could live happily forever like this.
One day, one of the officials found out the couple's worry and told them, “Prince, I heard that there is a magic charm(吉祥饰物),and it can protect you from any unfortunate event. If you always carry the magic charm with you, your fear and worry will disappear.” “Is it true Where can I find that charm ” The prince asked him joyfully. “There is an old man in the forest, and he knows about everything. You can ask him.”
The couple visited the old man, and asked for help with their worries and fears. The old man nodded his head as if he knew everything and said, “Travel all around the world. Then, when you meet a very happy couple, ask them to cut a piece of their underwear. If you keep the piece of the underwear, your fear and worry will go away.”
The couple appreciated the old man's kindness and set out on the journey. The couple wandered around everywhere and heard about a happy knight (骑士) and his wife in a town. They went to visit the knight. “Are you really happy like the rumor ” Then the knight answered. “Of course, we are, Prince. But our only worry and problem is that we didn't have any children.”
They had to find an absolutely happy couple, so they continued their journey. They visited a happy couple who were famous for their happiness in the next town. And they asked the couple if they were really happy. The couple answered. “Yes, we are very happy. But we have too many children. A mother with a large family of children never has a peaceful day. We worry too much about our children.”
They could not get a magic charm this time too, and kept going on their trip. It was very hard to find the happiest couple in the world.
One day, the prince couple met a shepherd(牧羊人)and his wife in a big field.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Feeling disappointed and tired out, the prince couple decided to go back.

One day, the prince couple met a shepherd and his wife in a big field. The shepherd was driving a herd of sheep, and his wife took their two children to him. The moment the shepherd saw his family, he ran to them directly, kissing and embracing each of them by turns. Knowing that this was known to be the happiest family they were looking for, the prince couple approached them and asked politely “I am sorry, but could you please cut a piece of your underwear for us ” But the happiest shepherd couple felt confused and said “We would like to help you but we don't wear any underwear.”
Feeling disappointed and tired out, the prince couple decided to go back. Immediately they returned to their country they visited the old wise man, saying that the magic charm was nowhere to be found. The old man smiled and said “Well is our trip a vain effort ” The prince couple thought to themselves for a while and finally, they realized that the true magic charm was in their mind, and happiness depends on themselves. Then they held hands firmly and looked in each other’s eyes, knowing that they would never be unhappy whatever came their way.

8. What does “this problem” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Sea water is bard to purify.
B. The desert is short of water.
C. The temperature is high in the desert.
D. Desert farms aren’t fit to plant vegetables.

A. It needs more pesticides. B. It saves delivery costs.
C. It has a location limit. D. It solves food waste problems
10. What can we know about the Sabara Forest Project
A. It lives up to expectations
B It can help produce more food
C. It is started to prevent global warming
D. It uses technology to produce saltwater

14. Which city’s temperature will change less from now to 2050
A Minneapolis. B. Riyadh. C. Jakarta. D. Kansas City.
15. What’s the importance of the study
A. Make the public realize the danger. B. Stop London’s situation from getting worse.
C. Help Barcelona out of difficulty. D. Get city planners to think ahead.
