New research has shown how the Leaning (倾斜) Tower of Pis has managed to keep standing in the face of several strong earthquakes. It has leaned at an angle of about five degrees.
The vulnerability (脆弱性)of the UNESCO World Heritage Site has confused engineers and scientists for a thousand years. Earthquake activities were expected to significantly damage the tower or even result in its falling over. However, unbelievably, this has not happened.
A research group of 16 engineers at the University of Bristol have now discovered that the height and hardness of the tower, combined with the softness of the base soil, ensure that it doesn’t resonate (共振)with earthquake ground motion, which is known as Dynamic Soil-Structure Interaction (DSSI) and the lower now holds the title of world record holder in DSSI effects.
What is interesting is that the very same soil, which caused the leaning instability(不稳定性) and made the tower almost fall, can be credited for helping it survive these earthquake events.
The tower continues to attract visitors keen to express their big surprise at amazing buildings. Construction of the tower began in the twelfth century and continued for over 199 years clue to the onset of a series of wars.
Multiple efforts to preserve the historic site have occurred over the years. In the 1920s, the bases were put in cement grout (水泥架)with the intention of making the tower firm. In 1990, a decision was made to completely close the site to visitors due to the fear that it was at risk of falling over.
It was the first time the tower had been closed in 800 years. It reopened again in 2001 and remains one of Italy’s most popular tourist attractions.
8. What did engineers and scientists find about the tower
A. What caused the leaning of the tower.
B. Why the tower had survived for long.
C. The earthquakes did damage to the tower.
D. The condition of the tower was puzzling.
9. What does the passage mainly discuss
A. The Leaning Tower of Pisa has survived several earthquakes.
B. Some interesting and true facts of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
C. The building and recent restoring of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
D. The relationship between earthquakes and the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
10. How long was the tower ever closed
A. For about 10 years. B. For about 199 years.
C. For about 790 years. D. For about 800 years.

A. It strengthens the force of the earthquake.
B. It contributes to the standing of the tower.
C. It prevents the tower above from leaning.
D. It keeps the same pace with earthquakes.

Like millions of boys and an increasing number of girls, David's dream was to become a professional football star. Now David is England’s most famous mid-field player and a world superstar. David achieved his dream but what about all the other children with the same dream
Many countries have set up programs to encourage and cultivate young footballers, and this is where the football clubs go to access athletes and find stars of the future. In the UK the clubs send scouts around the country to discover talented children. They watch hundreds of matches played by school teams. When they spot young people with talent, they invite them to train with the club. If they are under sixteen, they still go to school but take part in club training in the evenings and play in the junior team at weekends. Those that are good enough then become youth trainees at the age of sixteen and join the club as a paid member of staff. During this time they receive football instruction and play for the youth team, but it is not an easy life. There is a lot of competitions for places on the team. The salary is low and the job includes cleaning the changing rooms, toilets and senior colleagues’ boots. The trainees also go to college one day a week where they study other characteristics of the football industry such as court maintenance and office administration.
After two years, only a few trainees are good enough to go on to the next stage. There lucky ones are offered a contract with a club and their life as a professional footballer begins. From this point the success of their career and how much they earn depend on their performance and how many matches their team wins. Perhaps, like David, one or two became great stars. However, football is such a fiercely competitive occupation that many players have to become amateur players or leave the profession to find other careers.
12. Many football programs have been set up with the purpose of ________.
A. attracting as many as sponsors B. contributing more to football
C. developing gifted football stars D. raising the awareness of football
13. What does the underlined word “scouts” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean
A. Persons with top professional knowledge. B. Persons employed to search for somebody.
C. Detectives whose task is to find out the truth. D. Pioneers who are creative and talented.
14. Who are the intended readers of the passage
A. Football trainers. B. Amateur footballers.
C. Footballers with talented skills. D. Children with football dreams.
15. Which statement may the author agree with
A. Football might not be a good career choice. B. Your dream will come true by working hard.
C. Football is too competitive to fight for. D. Footballers’ success is a piece of luck.

Pat took her first college class at Kennesaw State University. After one term, she dropped out to move to Tennessee. She spent the next several decades working as an accountant and raising a family.

A. The Leaning Tower of Pisa has survived several earthquakes.
B. Some interesting and true facts of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
C. The building and recent restoring of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

10. How long was the tower ever closed
A. For about 10 years. B. For about 199 years.
C. For about 790 years. D. For about 800 years.
11. How does the soft base soil of the tower function
A. It strengthens the force of the earthquake.
